Favorite Song from a musical
« on: 28 Oct 2006, 10:49 »

Let's add some class to this dingy little outlet mall

what's your favorite song out of a musical you can ever go with traditional (has to have been a stage production at some stage) or modern (can be off tv...this dosn't mean you can count anything from the red windmill)
for example i'm going with
the oldest establishment (guys and dolls - traditional)
and
what's this (the nightmare before christmas - modern)
Logged
and my ears are wearing head phones
they do play my favorite songs
not music i'm told to like
but the songs that make me dance along

Music Of The Night (Phantom) for me...I love all the songs from that musical, but Music of the Night is at the top of the list.

Anything from The Blues Brothers musical. The one musical I would see more than once.

Hope Rides Alone - The Protomen (Come on, who doesn't love a Megaman/Protoman musical?)
La Vie Boheme - RENT
Music of the Night - Phantom of the Opera

I just like musicals.  *sigh*  It is hard to pick.

'Nosferatu Man' is also a highlight.

Edited for clarity:

Actually, I cannot stand most modern stage musicals.  I enjoy movie musicals slightly more (e.g. The Blues Brothers or The Producers).  Phantom of the Opera and Rent I have no respect for.

I've got to second the "Once More With Feeling" - wonderful episode, I actually bought the soundtrack.

Also, Bjork's movie "Dancer in the Dark" is amazing, and should be watched by everyone.

Particularly 'Willows Song' and 'Maypole'.

Once More With Feeling is pretty rad. ?"I'll Never Tell" is my favorite song from that.

Also, "Oogie Boogie's Song" from Nightmare before Christmas and "Skid Row (Downtown)" from Little Shop of Horrors.

I am super in love with "You Can't Stop the Beat" from Hairspray. It's so cheesy and happy and dance-y.

I also love the entirety of Rent, especially "Take Me or Leave Me", just cause I can actually kinda sing it.

Besides "once more with feeling", most of "labrynth" and "music of the night", my all time fav has to be the theme from Beauty and the Beast (the one that goes "tale as old as time"). I've lost track how many times I've seen the film, and I've seen it on stage three times (including once earlier this month) and it always makes me cry!

Ok, I'm not sure if the old-tyme animated Disney movies count as musicals...

...but if so, Oo-De-Lally from the Robin Hood soundtrack = the winner.

And if not that, Sweet Transvestite.

the oldest establishment (guys and dolls - traditional)

When I was a freshman, we did Guys and Dolls, and as a guy, I got to be a crapshooter. One time there was a concert in the auditorium that night, so we had to rehearse in the cafeteria, so we pushed the piano down the hall and discovered that our pianist and music director can play while walking. It was tremendous.

My fovorites are probably:
"Mr. Cellophane" from Chicago (My audition this year)
"Heaven on their Minds" from Jesus Christ Superstar
"Galaxy Song" from The Meaning of Life (I think it counts)
"Mr. Mistoffelees" from CATS

There's others out there too, those are just some of my current favorites.

I could never pick just one.

Top contenders include:
Mr. Cellophane from Chicago
Chaveleh from Fiddler on the Roof
The Ballad of Sweeney Todd from Sweeney Todd
The Origin of Love from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (though I adore pretty much every song from Hedwig)
Cabaret from Cabaret

I like dark musicals. And Gilbert and Sullivan, but G&S is really about the whole production more than individual songs.

The ones I have seen...

TV: "What You Feel" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Movie: "Chilly Down" from Labyrinth.
Stage (Modern): "Habe Sie Gehurt Das Deutsche Band?" from The Producers (Mind you, "Urinetown" from Urinetown comes an extremely close second).
Stage (Classic): "Behold the Lord High Executioner" from The Mikado.

The ones I'd like to see...
Stage (Modern): Is a tie between "Laker Girls Cheer" and "Monks Chant/He Is Not Dead Yet" from Spamalot.
Stage (Classic): "With a Little Bit of Luck" from My Fair Lady.

Jumping into a forum that is new for me topics like this always make me smile.
- Schadenfrueda from Avenue Q
-Hunches from Suessical (ok yes I am the only person on the planet that actually enjoyed that show. plus i am lighting designer and its a really fun show to design. Yes i do feel the need to defend myself)

Basically thats its, I tend to like straight shows more then musicals......that and i can't think of anything else I am fond of.

Frank Black's version of Sugar Daddy is also ace (both from 'Wig in a Box: A Tribute To Hedwig & The Angry Inch').
Nothing beats performing them live though

Yeah anything from that musical gets me. Origin of Love is probably the most played, but recently i've gone for Midnight Radio, just 'cause its about the closest thing i have to beliefs/community: 'And all you strange rock and rollers/yea you're doing alright/so hold on to each other/you gotta hold on tonight'

i dunno. that whole soundtrack's scratched into my soul

Hedwig and the Angry Inch came off to me as a terribly pretentious attempt at achieving a Rocky-Horror esque LGBT cult following by people without very much in the way of charm or wit, but to be fair I've only seen the first half of the film once and I was probably drunk.

Probably? Kinda?
Its about the songs more then the music, though when I saw a production here it kinda... came together. The idea is that Hedwig is playing at a small shitty gig and next door is Tommy Gnosis' concert... which i imagine is sometihng like Placebo

i dunno. you can read stuff into the film, but mostly its a way to string together the songs. it does have some good lines, though... Hedwig's a tragic character or something.

the songs, though... the songs....
