Seconded, that album's amazing. If the pure BM isn't going down well but you'd like to try something with that sound I'd recommend Teen Cthulhu (think His Hero Is Gone playing BM) and Anaal Nathrakh (they've always sounded a little bit grindcore to me). Neither have the usual BM production values.

But remember, think twice before paying money for NSBM. I like some of that stuff myself, but I'd never want Graveland etc to actually receive money from me. I'd rather rob their nazi asses.

I never really got in to Dodheimsgard. Their avant-garde elements have always seemed to forced for my tastes, I may try them again.

Right, anyway, you like Agalloch, so I'll back up that Ulver recommendation, and you'd also probably better check out Woods of Ypres - Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth (vastly pretentious, but I like it). Scytales list is pretty good, but I think some of the suggestions (Beherit, Judas Iscariot, maybe Burzum) would probably be better appreciated if you'd listened round the genre a bit first. It took me literally years to get into black metal properly, starting with Dimmu Borgir and working upwards. Here's a couple more suggestions, maybe some more mainstream or veering off from black metal a bit, but I think they'll all help you build an appreciation of the whole thing, some EPs in here as well:

1349 - "Chaos Preferred"
Abigail - "Intercourse and Lust"
Aborym - "Fire Walk With Me" and "With No Human Intervention"
Ancient Rites - "Dim Carcosa" and "And the Hordes Stood as One" (An essential live album)
Borknagar - "The Olden Domain"
Carpathian Forest - "Defending the Throne of Evil" and "Morbid Fascination of Death"
Impaled Nazarene - "Suomi Finland Perkele"
Nattefrost - "Blood and Vomit"
Sigh - "Scorn Defeat"
Venom - "Black Metal" (Not really BM, but you've gotta hear it)

And I'd recommend you start with Immortal on 'Battles in the North' and Darkthrone on 'Transilvanian Hunger', but that's mainly taste. Burzum, however, I think you should definitely start on with the self-titled, like, it's just a rule.

Once you get more in to the whole thing, try:

Abyssic Hate - "Depression", "Suicidal Emotions" and the "United By Heathen Blood" split with Det Hedenske Folk
Horna - "Viha Ja Viikate", "Envaatnags Eflos Solf Esgantaavne" and "Sudentaival"
Nortt - "Gudsforladt"
Profanatica - "The Enemy of Virtue"
Vlad Tepes - "Celtic Poetry", "Dans Notre Chute" and the "March to the Black Holocaust" split with Belketre
Xasthur - "The Funeral of Being"

The thing to remember when you listen to black metal is that bands are normally either entirely serious or entirely not serious, and that bands in each category have to be listened to in the way they are intended to be listened to to be truly enjoyed, if that makes sense. Some black metal can be like a religious experience, some is designed to be drinking music. Give each its due, and simply ignore the really offensive aspects. It's all about the atmosphere.

Oh, and though by all means listen to them, because they do rock, don't actually buy any Nokturnal Mortum records, because they're fucking nazis and funding nazis is bad.

Also, this lists probably a bit scarce because I'm in my halls of residence room right now and I don't have my whole music collection with me, this is just from memory. Most if not all the other suggestions are quality though.

I've been waiting for Khar's post. Anyway, I just remmembered to recommend Dornenreich's Her von welken Nachten. Brilliant avante-grade/melodic BM. I've been listening to that album non stop for like a year now.

I kinda feel that way too. The songs on "International 666" are very piecemeal sounding with riffs being shoved up against each other without any apparent attempt at creating a cohesive whole. The music doesn't seem to purposefully try for a "schizo" aesthetic in the way of Mr. Bungle or Naked City, so I think that counts against its lack of flow even moreso. Still, I do enjoy a lot of the individual sections of the songs, but the songs as wholes leave a lot to be desired.

My one black(ish) metal album that I possess in my collection is by this band Embraced...the album is called "Within." Apparantly they're Swedish, and Amazon calls them death metal...but they have some creepily cool sounding keyboard work, and a buddy of mine told me they reminded him a bit of Cradle Of Filth, so I really don't know what to say they are. I'll post a Yousendit or something if anyone wants to check them out...

I'm so extremely unhip to all that is black metal; if I got my sub-genre's wrong, please don't growl vile oath's and curses at me...please?

Drottnar's new stuff seems to be extremely good. And good production as well. I'm not expert on black metal (I prefer death) but it seems to be quite technical/progressive/avant-garde.

1349 -- pretty good brutal black metal. good recording quality
Behemoth -- how'd we forget behemoth?
Bathory - Under the Sign of the Black Mark -- Brilliant album, home to two of my very favorite black metal songs, Equimanthorn and Woman of Dark Desires
Windir - 1184 -- while technically 'viking' metal, Windir has a great Black sound with very interesting guitars. don't miss.
Calvarium -- only has a couple albums and are 'new comers' to the scene but they have a pretty good new black metal sound
Catamenia -- Classic MeloBlack.
Darkest Hate Warfront -- you might wanna hold off on downloading this one until you have a few dozen albums under your belt, but they're good nonetheless.
Covenant - Nexus Polaris -- This album got me into black metal. Feat. Mayhem's Hellhammer, this slightly atmospheric album evokes a feeling that you're staring up at the night sky

Abyssic Hate are a great band, I agree with whomever reccomended Sucidal Emotions, great album. Might help if you're familliar with Burzum before you check it out though.

I've been listening to a lot of Clandestine Blaze pretty good stuff. I think somebody else also reccomended Deathspell Omega, Marco's other band.

A lot depends what sought of stuff you're into really. Do you want trancey ambient stuff? Raw lofi stuff? melodic stuff? Such a diverse genre....

Astarte! Why has no one mentioned Astarte? Great black metal that is 100% female (they have a male session drummer, but i'm hoping they recruit a good female metal drummer i can worship.)
Svartsyn -- If you can stand the washed-out sound this band has, then Svartsyn is really one of the greatest black metal acts I can recommend. Excellent creepy sound. real grim.
Tsjuder -- formed in 1993, this norwegian black metal band has all the marks of good black metal. their album Kill for Satan is one of the most brutal audio-assaults my ears have undertaken.

While on the topic of black metal and Behemoth, is their early stuff better or similar in quality to "Satanica"? I like that album a lot, but "Demigod" is crap, similar style, similar vocals, but just sounds cheesy.

I'm a neophyte in terms of metal, but I've become hopelessly addicted to a few bands (Opeth, Agalloch, Boris, and Mastodon to name a few) and I'm looking to expland my horizons a little bit. I figure as I've got a vague idea of where to go from here with DM, BM, doom and sludge and it would be a good idea to ask for a recommendation for a place to start with gothic metal. I haven't heard anything but I've read up on it a bit and I'm intrigued by the beauty/beast vocal duality. I'll consider anything but Nightwish (which I'm not dissing but I'm not entirely sure I've got the proper frame of reference to get into the symphonic stuff yet). Thanks in advance.

Well, if you're talking about the female vocal kind of stuff, then I guess you should be looking at Leave's Eyes, Epica, OLDER Lacuna Coil, anything with Arjen Lucassen's name on it (particularly Stream of Passion, but also Star One and Ayreon), Chalice.

Although maybe not what you're looking for, my strongest recommendation goes to KATATONIA. It's male vocals, but they're one of my favourite bands of recent times and they make incredible doomish gothic metal with fantastic atmospere. Their latest album "The Great Cold Distance" is an absolute cracker
