The Walking Dead
« on: 16 Nov 2006, 22:07 »

I just received my copy of The Walking Dead volume I and am thoroughly impressed by it. It combines the first 12 issues in the series.

I have such a fascination with everything zombie-related. I plowed through both the Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z in 2 days, and I wanted more. So I looked around and came across the Walking Dead series.

It's really great. The artwork is top-notch, the story is phenominal... I highly recommend it. The authors have stated that it's their intent to write at least 100 issues, so long as it sells well. If it does, I'll definitely start purchasing the individual issues.

Volume II (issues #13-24) will be released January 25th.

Anyone else read this yet? I strongly recommend it if you like zombies.

I remember getting several trades of that from the library.  Those are different from the volumes I take it?  There were three of them 6 months ago.  Sweet story though.  It's basically the same as every other zombie story but the characters are pretty sweet.

I may looking into buying this if I cannot find it on the interwebs.
I do not have lots of money to be spending on comics, though I wish I did.

Zombies are totally sweet (I've seen nearly every movie Romero's ever did, zombie-related or not).

I like it.  Short and decisive.

Yup, Robert Kirkman is a pretty talented writer. I like this series a lot.

This is one of my flat out favourite comics every month. The art is amazing, the story is compelling, but the best bit is that they're doing something completely new with the zombie genre. Instead of just being about "OMFG ZOMBIES" it's the struggle to survive in a post zombie world, which makes for a much more interesting story. It really is more of a character drama that just happens to have zombies involved than a zombie book, and I love it for that

I remembered the author from his first comic book series - Battle Pope. Walking Dead is very different, to say the least...

Definitely. Pick up the Zombie Survival Guide (also by Max Brooks) as well. In fact, read the Zombie Survival Guide before you read World War Z.

Really? The guy who wrote the Zombie Survival Guide is Max Brooks, the son of Mel Brooks, the funniest Jewish man alive. That would be spectacular if your dad did business with Mel Brooks. If he did, can I get his autograph? That'd be neat.

The other survival guides (wilderness, dating, etc.) have no relation to the Zombie Survival Guide - completely different author.

damn, for some reason i thought they were the same person. sadly he's done buisness with the author of the latter, not the former, which is far less exciting. the best i can do for you is paul newman's autograph. that i can get. not much else. sorry.
and yeh, mel brooks=genius. i wish i had some obscure connection to him.

This thread is about zombies and The Walking Dead!  Not Mel Brooks, funny as he may be.

Talk about Max Brooks!

I also have World War Z and the Zombie Survival Guide.  Tasty.

But The Walking Dead is incredible.  Everything that went on in Woodbury was really incredible.  I'm eager to see what happens next.

Book 6 comes out in early February. I'm really interested in seeing what transpires, considering what happened to Rick in book 5...

I looked through Book 5 last night, and it does indeed look hells of awesome.  I want to read from the beginning though, so (partially influenced by your suggestion, Matt!) I decided to purchase the Zombie Survival Guide instead.  I'm going to order the Walking Dead collection from Amazon here in the future, I think.

Eh, it's cheap enough on Amazon if you buy it used, and I prefer flipping through an actual book to scrolling through pages of PDF documents.

Psssh.  PDFs.

.CBZ man!

Hi-res, zipped scans, renamed and viewed through a utility.  It looks pretty tasty.

But yeah, if I could afford them, I totally would buy all the books.

Since this discussion was revived, I'll add the following:

Issue 33 was awesome.

All you zombiephiles need to read Zed Reckoning.

Well, since nowhere around where I live feels compelled to carry anything beyond the last book, I ended up..*ahem*...taking thepugs' suggestion, so I've spent most of the day today reading from issue #1.  I just finished with #19 and I'm just going to throw out a holy fuckdamn this is awesome!  Also, discovering that I really, really enjoy this comic makes me feel a little less foolish about going to Comic Con now that it could potentially be for more than to just hang out in California with Tyler and Kari.
