But I now return to my assertion that American Pie was his only good song. And it was terrible when Madonna covered it.

I whole-heartedly agree with that! Poor Don McLean, and his one and only good song completely butchered by that...wow, there are no appropriate insults for that woman anymore. They've all been used. When it was on the radio -all- the time, and people would sing it "because it's such a good thing!" I wanted to cry. I think I actually did a couple of times. It was horrible. I had spent the whole summer before listening to that song over and over, because it was uber-fantastic in my...oh, twelve year old head, and then Madonna had to do it, and I had to tell people, "Guys! It's not -her- song! It's a cover!" and no one believed me until they heard a DJ say it on the radio. I went to school with idiots.

Sorry, I ranted a bit. It's an awesome song that got covered by a hack.

So someone, who has recorded a few dozen truly classic pop songs across their career, is dismissed as a hack for doing one shitty cover?

That's fucking idiotic.

I usually dismiss her for writing a whole host of insipid pop ditties.

Is that somehow better?

So hey, how about that time Korn played "One" on national tee-vee for all to hear?

I really love Doug Martsch of Built to Spill, but his cover of Woke Up This Morning (With My Mind on Jesus) by Blind Roosevelt Graves and Brother, an old southern, almost gospelly song, if you haven't heard it, was really bad. Like the original version is all happy and uplifting but the cover is really depressing and very unearthy. I was really disappointed.

He means "One" by Metallica. It was also on one of their DVDs or Greatest Hits CDs I think.
Eh, it wasn't that good, but I didn't think it was horrible. Worst part is that
they shortened it. Took out the best part of the solo.

Blue Monday is awesome.

Kylie Minogue has performed Can't Get You Out Of My Head to Blue Monday. I hate her song but it is interesting/weird to hear.

Also seeing New Order perform perform Blue Monday is really strange. They introduced the song by saying that they only play it because they have to. I found it hard to enjoy knowing that the band really weren't enjoying themselves.

I can see why. Especially since half of them don't have to do anything during it, and it is eight minutes long.

That may be because someone knocked the singer unconscious, tapping the 'conscience' part of him into action when he came to, meaning that they only decided to rape Karma Police. Only.

It's kind of like deciding to only give someone AIDS instead of Syphillis too.

Does that Linkin Park stunt involving Sweet Child Of Mine count, because if it does I would put that high up among my least favorites. Also, I'm going to second the Limp Bizkit cover of Behind Blue Eyes.

Another song that didn't not need covering, especially not by a crappy rap rock band.

Fall Out Boy did a cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" I downloaded it and couldn't even listen to it all the way through.

You say that like it's the only song they've ruined.  Other songs Fall Out Boy has raped:

-The Police- "Roxanne"
-Gorilla Biscuits- "Start Today"
-Jawbreaker- "Save Your Generation"
-One of the songs from Nightmare Before Christmas, I forget which.

I have to say, I don't really like KoRn's cover of 'Brick.' Pink Floyd are my favourite (defunct) band, and The Wall is great. However, I appreciate what they've done to it. They have taken that song and made it their own. I give them props for willingly taking the original and turning it into a KoRn track. So fuck anyone who says it's shit. You're right, it is shit. But at least they've not done it EXACTLY like the original.

Ditto goes to Sugarcoma's cover of 'Crazy.'
