What I am Listening to Today.
« on: 01 Dec 2006, 07:46 »

I have been reaally digging Kenickie's At The Club today. It's early 90's british girls, with a sort of Punk Electronica feel to it that really rubs me the right way. The lyrics are mostly really depressingly sleazy, with lines like "She drunk all that we had/She threw up and I was glad" standing out over really fuckin frenetic guitars and drums. Come Out 2Nite is probably the standout, with some really kicking handclaps to propel the song forward, but Nightlife takes the Lyrical Cake by far with a bridge finishing with the lines "We are young for your desecration, destroy what you find."

All in all, you should probably listen to this band. Feel free to talk about them in this thread until I start talking about a different band in this thread.

I listened to Kenickie at kieffer's suggestion, they are quite good i think, sounds a lot like a sleazier, older All Girl Summer Fun Band.

The Sleaze is great with them though, because it's not QUITE let me fuck everything, it's more like, hey dudes, sex is pretty cool. Drinking is cool.

Basically they sound like girls I would want to date singing songs about things we did together on a Saturday night. A couple of their songs are a little sappy, but the vocals are so damn good that it kind of makes up for it.

Also, they do the three people shouting punk harmony better than maybe anyone, because they can all sing a little bit, and since they all sound like pretty girls, it's the perfect mix of, balls in vice or balls in mouth.

Sleater Kinney owes a lot to these girls, they just don't know it yet.

While listening to AC Newman, I pondered aloud in Gabbly as to who he was. Having been filled in by Emilio that he was a member of the New Pornographers, I decided to give the band another chance, since I had been enjoying Mr. Newman's sounds quite thouroughly. As I began listening to Mass Romantic, I was immedeatly impressed with the force of the percussion, and the guitar was really poppy and enjoyable. However, after hearing that song, I have decided that Neko Case should have her tounge ripped out and fed to her, because fuck I hate her voice.

I will listen to more and report back.

Okay this is actually really depressing. They play really really good music. They are clearly very good at insturments, but I just can not handle the singing. I got about 5 songs in, and once Jackie sounded exactly like a fucking mediocre smashing pumpkins song, I had to quit.

I am actually really liking Electric Version so far.

Neko Case has an amazing voice. Unlike practically every other singer I hear, she's got personality and emotion in her voice that I believe rather than think is an affectation or an act.

For a second when you said 'Jackie' I thought you meant the song 'Jackie, Dressed In Cobras' and I was going to ask if you had any ears, and if so, if those ears were stuffed with Bily Corgan's tongue, because that song sounds nothing like the Pumpkins at all.

Nope I meant Jackie off of Mass Romatic, which sounds like a weird mix of Decemberists and Pumpkins that makes me kind of want to vomit. Electric Version is really fucking good though.

I have moved on to ace of base, and I am not really sure why.

I can't hear any resemblance between the Smashing Pumpkins and the New Porn.

It's just on that one song, and I don't get why, but I can't stop thinking it.

I'm listening to the 13th floor elevators right now. I do not know where they came from or how they got on my computer, but as far as blues rock goes, their pretty good so far. They have a little bit of weirdness to them, like the synth line in the background of Slide Machine, but mostly it's just a dude singin songs about missing a girl or somethin like that, and his voice is pretty awesome.

Felix make your own thread, this is what I am listening to today

Guys. The new Mos Def is one of the best things I have ever heard. I can not formulate a coherant response, but he is actually rapping on this one, which is a huge step over New Danger, and Dollar Day is one of the best rap songs I've heard in a reallllly long time. It's about Hurricane Katrina. Fuck I love Mos Def's voice too, he just has this flawless smoothness to his delivery. Guys download this album, it's called True Magic gogogogo

14 Iced bears is the kind of music that pitchfork writers masturbate to while thinking up how best to mock a good album or praise something that nobody cares about

That Mos Def sounds like it will be pretty exciting. Consider me on the lookout for it as of now. You're right about his voice, too -- super smooth, and he has a really good flow with words.

I believe our own Sam (Awkward Silence) is playing at Erikson's son's Birthday Party pretty soon. Maybe he'll get to see the man and he can give us an update.

wait, seriously sam? That's awesome.

The Psychadelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is great.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.
