Old School Cheat Code appreciation
« on: 11 Dec 2006, 21:37 »

I was playing the original Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat the other night - god bless you, emulators! - and there's just something about remembering "abacabb" and "down up left left a right down" that made me feel warm and tingly inside...so this thread is for you to post your favorite cheats from old video games.*

*excluding the Konami code, because I'm pretty sure that almost everyone knows that!

up up down down left right left right b a start! I know, I just wanted to type it.

down r up l y b - super-turbo in Street Fighter II Turbo, SNES

Maniac Mansion... not really cheat codes, but there was an ultra cheap "tip," that if you never bothered to fix some broken wires, allowing Dr. Fred to play his video game, the combination to the last security door was "0000".

Oh man, Maniac Mansion. I had that game for my NES when I was like 6 and it scared the hell out of me. I never really figured out how to play it correctly.

I myself loved NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000, which made you invincible and gave you infinite missiles in Metroid, there is something about running through lava that is so much fun

Spend all your money.
Set all rates to 0%.
Hold L when Tax Screen comes up in December.
Go With Figures.
Open Tax Screen.
Set everything at 100%.
Exit.
Release L.
Boom, $999,999!

The first one is Neverwinter Nights, the last one is Twisted Metal 4 for PSX. I know the middle is Quake, so I'm gonna assume Quake 4 (going from
spawn weaponmod_hyperblaster_bounce1    Allows shots to bounce off of walls)

Well. It isn't a cheat CODE. But the hadoken upgrade om Megaman X is a classic =)

Otherwise I just love the parody Space Quest 6 has on the old cheatcodes.
The secret code to a ingame minigame is ABBACACA =)

Another good code is EXCELKFA (in the Excel 97 easter egg)

But to name a real cheatcode (although not old) I'd say imarealweenie from septerra core. Using that code is humiliating =)

And to the topic. Old cheatcodes... Hmm, don't rember much old cheatcodes, and not any from consoles really... sorry =P

Warcraft had: corwin of amber, there can be only one, glittering prizes etc. I think Warcraft 2 had: it is a good day to die, pot of gold and on screen

Impulse 9, god and fly from quake

idspispopd was no clipping from doom, I can't remeber what the cheat for beserk was now but I used to love that cheat.

Sub Zero's fatality in MK was forwards, forwards, down, forwards, high punch.

I've forgotten just about everything else

I remember playing the Aladin game for snes when I was to young to write so in order to remember the codes I would have to draw the things so in order to tell you the code I remember it would be in squiggles that look like a monkey a genie lamp jafar and I imagine the princess or maybe Jafar again.

You must still be a bit young - that sentence was utterly incomprehensible.

Oh, and use the hookshot if you're being attacked - you won't suffer any damage so long as the hookshot is extended.

that slogan is a good slogan. so good, in fact, I think it should be applied to other things. like, "there's no wrong way to hit your spouse." or "there's no wrong way to commit nonconsentual sodomy."
