Your own personal theme song
« on: 13 Dec 2006, 03:49 »

I know this thread's been done before but I was listening to the eels today and I heard the song Hey Man (Now You're Really Living).

Do you know what it's like to fall on the floor
And cry your guts out till you got no more
Hey man now you're really living

Have you ever made love to a beautiful girl
Made you feel like it's not such a bad world
Hey man now you're really living

Now you're really giving everything
And you're really getting all you gave
Now you're really living what
This life is all about

Well i just saw the sun rise over the hill
Never used to give me much of a thrill
But hey man now I'm really living

Do you know what it's like to care too much
'bout someone that you're never gonna get to touch
Hey man now you're really living

Have you ever sat down in the fresh cut grass
And thought about the moment and when it will pass
Hey man now you're really living

What I really like about these lyrics is they list both the good and bad things about being alive. Some are really shitty, some are pretty great. For me, that's what life's all about. And THAT is why it's my new personal theme song. List yours and give some explanation! Lyrics don't hurt either.

That's my favorite song by Weezer!

I think mine would probably be Iron & Wine - Upward Over the Mountain, for much the same reason as Skibas.

Wait, do you mean "Flagpole Sitta"?

I have way too many theme songs. I'll get on my desktop computer later and narrow the field down.

Yes, it's "Flagpole Sitta", and it's by Harvey Danger, not Lit (who are terrible).  And Harvey Danger is actually a really good band beyond just that one song.

I don't know if it's possible for me to pick just one, but one song that has always really affected me emotionally is Nevermore's Who Decides. I don't know if it describes me, per se, but I love it anyway.

And so we meet again
the dirt on our feet but then
Who knows who really decides?
In this spacial oddity, this viral commodity
The astronaut listens to voices that call
Won't you follow me down?
Breathe
As you suffer with existence

Rags and ruin of all that was human
Leeching the force of collective design
Heroes and rapists they all have nice faces
But who decides, who defines, who draws the lines?

In this wasted miracle, the outcome so terminal
Why do we waste time on hope?
In perfect execution, liquid and lucid
Born in the astromaut's eyes
Of hate, loathing, wonder, and fear
Breathe
As you suffer in denial

The lover and the blind man they sing their song
The pleasured and the pained pray their sins are gone
They can't reach heaven, the truth's brutal lesson
Forgive yourself, for no one else will die for your crimes
But who decides?
Who decides?

I don't know if it works as well without being able to hear Dane's voice in your head like I can when I read those lyrics.

There are probably some others that are less cynical and apply more to myself as an individual, but that was my gut reaction. I may post more if I think of them.

Found it.

How I don't know how to sing.
I can barely play this thing.
But you never seem to mind,
and you tell me to fuck off
when I need somebody to.
How you make me laugh so hard.
How whole years refuse to stay
where we told them to, bad dog,
locked up whining in a word
or a misplaced souvenir.
How the past chews on your shoes,
and these memories lick my ear.

How we waste our precious time
marching in the picket lines
that surround those striking hearts.
How the time is never now,
and we know who we should love,
but we're never certain how.

I know you might roll your eyes at this,
but I'm so glad that you exist.

theres a few, but the one in particular i can think of:

Measure me in metered lines
And one decisive stare
The time it takes to get from here to there
My ribs that show through t-shirts
And these shoes I got for free
I'm unconsoled
I'm lonely
I am so much better than I used to be
Terrified of telephones
And shopping malls and knives
Drowning in the pools of other lives
Rely a bit too heavily
On alcohol and irony
Get clobbered on by courtesy
In love with love and lousy poetry
And I'm leaning on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it almost feels okay
Circumnavigate this body
Of wonder and uncertainty
Armed with every precious failure
And amature cartography
I'm breathing deep before
I spread those maps out on my bedroom floor
And I'm leaning on this broken fence
Between past and present tense
And I'm losing all those stupid games
That I swore I'd never play
But it feels okay
And I'm leaving with goodbye
And I'm losing but I'll try
With the last ways left
To remember sing
My imperfect offering

Our Time- Stephen Sondheim (from Merrily We Roll Along)

Something is stirring,
Shifting ground

It's just begun.

Edges are blurring

All around,
And yesterday is done.

Feel the flow,

Hear what's happening:

We're what's happening.

Don't you know?

We're the movers and we're the shapers.

We're the names in tomorrow's papers.

Up to us, man, to show 'em

It's our time, breathe it in:

Worlds to change and worlds to win.

Our turn coming through,
Me and you, man,
Me and you!

Feel how it quivers,

On the brink
Everything!

Gives you the shivers,
Makes you think

There's so much stuff to sing!

And you and me,
We'll be singing it like the birds,
Me with music and you the words,

Tell 'em things they don't know!

Up to us, pal, to show 'em

It's our time, breathe it in:

Worlds to change and worlds to win.

Our turn, we're what's new,
Me and you, pal,

Me and you!

Feel the flow,

Hear what's happening:

We're what's happening!

Long ago

All we had was that funny feeling,

Saying someday we'd send 'em reeling,

Now it looks like we can!
Someday just began

It's our heads on the block.

Give us room and start the clock.

Our time coming through,

Me and you, pal,

Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!
Me and you!

True... the people who sing this song end up jaded and no longer believe a word of it... but I love it.

Jessies Girl by Rick Springfield.

I always fall in love with my best friends girlfriends. He knows this, so whenever there is karaoke (which is often) we'll sing it together.

Gallow's Pole by Demons & Wizards would be my theme song I think. Just for the lyrics at the end

...
A shattered heart an empty soul
Just one false move and it took its toll
The rising of an evil seed
I can't describe the pain I feel
Outside it's dark inside it's cold
The sun still shines bright
But its time is short

Endless stairs
A guiding light
That once was warm
But now it's bitter cold

It's freezing hearts
It's freezing souls
Soon icy shades will cover all
It pretends to be alive
It pretends to be alive
Be alive
Be alive
Be alive

Collapse of the mother
All will die
The void it frightens me
I've faced the demon
And he dwells inside

And when I laugh it's tears I hide
And when I cry it's joy inside
A foul disease has stained the land
The bitter harvest of a dying bloom
And when I cry it's joy inside
A wicked smile for all the tears I hide
It hurts to hold all the pain I feel
The bitter harvest of a dying bloom...

Switchfoot is, and has always been, a great band in my opinion.  I kinda miss the old days when they were the little guys (New Way To Be Human era) but I'm glad to see them finally get the recognition they deserve...anyway, end threadjack.

My theme song, at least right now, would probably be "Last Light" by Converge.
Quote
i need you to be the strength of widows and soul survivors
i need you to be as fearless as new mothers and new fathers
i need you to be the hope of hearts who lost true love
i need you to be the might of their first kiss
i need a purpose and i need a reason
i need to know that there is trophy and meaning
to all that we lose and all we fight for
to all our loves and our wars
keep breathing
keep living
keep searching
keep pushing on
keep bleeding
keep healing
keep fading
keep shining on
this is for the hearts still beating

I love the last section, the part that I emphasised...it's been a huge inspiration to me lately to keep fighting through whatever shit I'm going through in my life, and to not give up.  I know that sounds pretty cliched, but I guess you sort of take whatever you can get wherever you can get it...

i feel like i'm about to hurl
my head spins like a tiltawhirl
my heart is gonna beat out of my chest

my legs feel like a ton of bricks
my eyes lately been playing tricks
and i'm feeling all fucked up again

i've been staying up to late
and i think i've been losing weight
and i ramble on and on i'm feeling all fucked up again
(2nd verse same as the first)

simple ramonescore but very apt to how i feel now.

"I'm finding it harder to be a gentleman" by The White Stripes

Well I'm finding it harder
to be a gentleman every day
all the manners that I've been taught
have slowly died away
but if I held the door open for you
It would make your day

You think that I care
about me and only me
when every single girl needs help
climbing up a tree
well I know it don't take much
to satisfy me

Maybe it's whatever's in my mind
that's distracting me
but if i could find emotion
to stimulate devotion
well then you'd see

Well I'm finding it hard to say
that I need you twenty times a day
I feel comfortable so baby why
don't you feel the same?
have a doctor come and visit us
and tell us which one is sane

Well I never said I wouldn't
Throw my jacket in the mud for you
but my father gave it to me so
maybe I should carry you
then you said
"You almost dropped me"
so then I did
and I got mud on my shoes

Without doubt, it's 'The Wickedest Man in the World' by Skyclad. Yeah, my answer to all these types of questions involves Skyclad, and so what? This song is just an absolutely brilliant little bit of misanthropy, but also just so much fucking fun. It's a song that says 'fuck you, I don't care about you, your standards or your aims', which is how I feel a lot of the time, especially since very few people give me any reciprocal attention of that sort. It also gets me really pumped up. Another option might be 'Disco Hospital' by Coil, but only if I can also moonwalk everywhere dressed in a leopard print SS uniform.

I stand here before you
The way life has made me
Ill mannered, foul mouthed
Bad tempered and lazy
I stare at your world
Down the neck of a bottle
Every day is a death ride
When I hold the throttle.

To the drowning I am water
For your calm I am the storm
I'm the fiend who's with your daughter
In bed well before the dawn.

Was I the cat that got the bird?
They'll put the blame on me
Everything was grand in wonderland
Till Charles Manson came to tea.

Each moment's a game
And I must play it to win
And if you cannot bear it
Then you'll just have to grin
All the world is a stage
So I aim to upstage you
("By the pricking of my thumbs")
Kill me off - but like Banquo
I'll come back to plague you
("Something wicked this way comes")

All martyrs seek their cross and nails
The rebels grail his cause
So I'll just sign away my soul
And forget the buy-out clause.

The few who see me through my disguise
Abhore, deplore, hate and despise me
I care not what you perceive
Fall unto your knees!
(Jack the Ripper went to Sunday school
With his best friends Mack the Knife
And the blue eyed boy
Who lives next door
He's a junkie Jesus Christ).

Do you think I'll be sad
'cus you don't like me
Well I consider it highly unlikely
Spill the milk but I won't cry
My eyes are watertight
Like my alibi.

Yes I'll love you then leave you
For no apparent reason
My names are many
My friends call me "Legion"
The light that casts the shadows
Darker shades of black
That hide the drugged up mugger
Who will stab you in the back.

I'm not the type of angel
Who fell from divine grace
I'm the one who was so bad
He never got there in the first place
The vulture in the wings
As the battle flags unfurl
"Pleased to meet you,
I'm the wickedest man in the world."

I am going to go with "If She Wants Me" by Belle and Sebastian

I wrote a letter on a nothing day
I asked somebody "Could you send my letter away?"
"You are too young to put all of your hopes in just one envelope"

I said goodbye to someone that I love
It's not just me, I tell you it's the both of us
And it was hard
Like coming off the pills that you take to stay happy

Someone above has seen me do alright
Someone above is looking with a tender eye
Upon her face, you may think you're alone but you may think again

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy
They'd write it on my grave, or when they scattered my ashes
On second thoughts I'd rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

And far away somebody read the letter
He condescends to read the words I wrote about him
And if he smiles, it's no more than a genius deserves
For all his curious nerve and his passion

I'm going deaf, you're growing melancholy
Things fall apart, I don't know why we bother at all
But life is good and "It's always worth living at least for a while"

If I could do just one near perfect thing I'd be happy
They'd write it on my grave, or when they scattered my ashes
On second thoughts I'd rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

If you think to yourself "What should I do now?"
Then take the baton, girl, you better run with it
There is no point in standing in the past cause it's over and done with

I took a book and went into the forest
I climbed the hill, I wanted to look down on you
But all I saw was twenty miles of wilderness so I went home

Gotta agree with the first poster. Eels is the way to go. I'm gonna go for "Eyes Down" from the Holes Soundtrack.

Well, the sun is shinin' but it don't feel good,
It don't smile down on this neighborhood.
When I go walkin' through this stinkin' town,
Mister, I keep my eyes down.

The brotherhood of the misunderstood,
Live and die here in all likelihood.
You're livin' in this town but I pray for sundown,
And baby, when you go downtown...

You keep your eyes down.
You keep your eyes down.
You keep your eyes down.
You keep your eyes down.

Fair weather friends need not apply,
The man of the house is not inside.
Baby, I'm keepin' my eyes down.

Go with the flow, well, you gotta be sick,
Think I'd rather hear my heart not tick.
But if you don't want wear a hospital gown,
Better get out now, or keep your eyes down.

Fair weather friends need not apply,
The man of the house is not inside.
Baby, I'm keepin' my eyes down.

Well, the sun is shinin' but it don't feel good,
It don't smile down on this neighborhood.
When I go walkin' through this stinkn' town,
Mister, I keep my eyes down.

Well the sun is shinin' but it don't feel good,
(I keep my eyes down!)
It don't smile down on this neighborhood.
(I keep my eyes down!)
When i go walkin' through this stinkn' town,
(I keep my eyes down!)
Mister, I keep my eyes...
(I keep my eyes down!)

There are very few songs that fit me better than this one; I am utterly unable to not stare at the floor unless my girlfriend is around, who I will stare at instead. However, she's usually staring at the ground too. Alas! The curse of those who had no confidence during their childhood.

This is complete nerdery and will probably get me lynched by the board full of people who love new Indie stuff, but my theme song is Desree's "You Gotta Be"

Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
Stand up and be counted
Don't be ashamed to cry
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
Herald what your mother said
Readin' the books your father read
Try to solve the puzzles in your own sweet time
Some may have more cash than you
Others take a different view
My oh my heh, hey
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day
Don't ask no questions, it goes on without you
Leaving you behind if you can't stand the pace
The world keeps on spinning
You can't stop it, if you try to
This time it's danger staring you in the face
Oh oh oh Remember
Listen as your day unfolds
Challenge what the future holds
Try and keep your head up to the sky
Lovers, they may cause you tears
Go ahead release your fears
My oh my heh, hey, hey
You gotta be
You gotta be bad, you gotta be bold
You gotta be wiser, you gotta be hard
You gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger
You gotta be cool, you gotta be calm
You gotta stay together
All I know, all I know, love will save the day

This song makes me feel like kicking ass and taking names--I miss the 90s sometimes!

I think the one that best fits would be Rush's New World Man

He's a rebel and a runner
He's a signal turning green
He's a restless young romantic
Wants to run the big machine

He's got a problem with his poisons
But you know he'll find a cure
He's cleaning up his systems
To keep his nature pure

Learning to match the beat of the Old World Man
Learning to catch the heat of the Third World Man

He's got to make his own mistakes
And learn to mend the mess he makes
He's old enough to know what's right
But young enough not to choose it
He's noble enough to win the world
But weak enough to lose it
He's a New World Man...

He's a radio receiver
Tuned to factories and farms
He's a writer and arranger
And a young boy bearing arms

He's got a problem with his power
With weapons on patrol
He's got to walk a fine line
And keep his self-control

Trying to save the day for the Old World Man
Trying to pave the way for the Third World Man

He's not concerned with yesterday
He knows constant change is here today
He's noble enough to know what's right
But weak enough not to choose it
He's wise enough to win the world
But fool enough to lose it
He's a New World Man...

Not in a Slint way, but I miss you[/i]

I couldn't believe this was an actual lyric.
How meta.

I was basically going to make this exact post

Switchfoot - Life And Love And Why

First off the title says it all about life if you ask me. To live, love and try to understand the "why?"s.
Then it's a christian song and Can I be used is probably the most usual question in my life =) (and many other christians)

I am against everything you stand for and I think that you worship at a false temple.

I'm referring to your liking Switchfoot. I mean, holy crap, man! That's pretty awful.
=P
I must say that I most often listen to switchfoot's earliest stuff. All the new songs sounds the same to me.
But why the hat against switchfoot, to me they sound like no other band out there (which is good).

Switchfoot is good, I think I've just grown away from them lately. I'll agree though, their earlier stuff was better. I think they were trying too hard to become popular once The Beautiful Letdown came out.

Where do you live? Because to me they sound like most American rock bands out there. I reviewed the 'Dare You To Move' single, and I was never less than scathing.

Only that single? Because then you missed something =)
Actually that song i my least favorite just because of the rock sound that made it become so popular.
But a classic like Chem 6A and Company Car is really good songs with a unique sound to me.

If I had to pick my theme song, it would be Holy Diver, by Dio. Hands down, one of my favorite songs.

Holy Diver
You've been down too long in the midnight sea
Oh what's becoming of me

Ride the tiger
You can see his stripes but you know he's clean
Oh don't you see what I mean

Gotta get away
Holy Diver

Shiny diamonds
Like the eyes of a cat in the black and blue
Something is coming for you

Race for the morning
You can hide in the sun 'till you see the light
Oh we will pray it's all right

Gotta get away-get away

Between the velvet lies
There's a truth that's hard as steel
The vision never dies
Life's a never ending wheel

Holy Diver
You're the star of the masquerade
No need to look so afraid

Jump on the tiger
You can feel his heart but you know he's mean
Some light can never be seen

The video is even better. Dio is an ugly mutha, but he totally believes he is the Holy Diver. I LOVE that song!

Oh man, that just got me thinking.

My theme song should totally be "Stand Up and Shout"

It's the same old song
You've gotta be somewhere at sometime
They never let you fly

It's like broken glass
You get cut before you see it
So open up your eyes

You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the fire
Stand up and shout-shout

You've got wings of steel
But they never really move you
You only seem to crawl

You've been nailed to the wheel
But never really turning
You know you've got to want it all

You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the fire
Stand up and shout

You are the strongest chain
And not just some reflection
So never hide again

You are the driver
You own the road
You are the fire go on explode

You've got desire
So let it out
You've got the power
Stand up and shout

God I have a massive boner for that album.

If I was going to choose a Dio song, it would be Night People.

Do you like the dark?
Do you like the way it moves?
Do you come alive when neon kills the sun?
Are you hypnotized, part of the illusion?
Oh oh see how they run!

It's the mystery,
Poetry and passion,
Innocence and fashion,
Revolution, evolution ways
Night people...

Are you satisfied?
With the lessons that you're learning,
Is the fire really burning, do you know?
Hey dream child! Promises are spoken,
and promises are broken
Electric eyes that never let you
See them in the day

Night people...Night people

Do you like the dark?
Do you like the way it moves?
Do you come alive when neon kills the sunshine?
Are you hypnotized?
Innocence and fashion,
Promises and passion
Evolution revolution ways...and everybody stays!
Night people...Night people yeah!
Do you like the dark aah!
Do you like the way it moves?
Are you hypnotized, paralyzed, revolution oh!
Hey dream child...you got electric eyes
Hey dream child ooh

Right now I'm thinking "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave . . . but that's probably mainly just wishful thinking.

Actually, on a more serious note: maybe "Merchant Navy" by David Beniuk. Which is incredibly obscure, for which I apologise, but it's basically a song about writing and travelling and daydreaming and at the end of the day being pretty much alone.

Tommy actually modelled his entire persona on a replacements song. It's taken years to perfect.

My personal theme song right now is...
I can't do this...

I'm sorry, but it was only a matter of time.
[/quote]
Risin' up, back on the street
Did my time, took my chances
Went the distance, now I'm back on my feet
Just a man and his will to survive

So many times, it happens too fast
You change your passion for glory
Don't lose your grip on the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them alive

It's the eye of the tiger, it's the cream of the fight
Risin' up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he's watchin' us all in the eye of the tiger

Face to face, out in the heat
Hangin' tough, stayin' hungry
They stack the odds 'til we take to the street
For we kill with the skill to survive

Risin' up, straight to the top
Have the guts, got the glory
Went the distance, now I'm not gonna stop
Just a man and his will to survive
