I cannot make this decision on my own...
« on: 09 Apr 2007, 07:40 »

OK. I agreed to go with my Dad to a Steely Dan concert since I've been promising to do something with him for a long time. By ordering the tickets he got two free downloads from iTunes, which he passed on to me. Now here's the problem...they are, naturally, only single song downloads, whereas I am an album buyin' man.

So I need some ideas for songs to download off iTunes that I won't regret later. There are a lot of albums I want, but I don't just want one or two songs off of them which I'll only redundantly buy later when I get the full album. If anyone knows of any unique single, EP, or iTunes-only bonus tracks, please help.

Can you still get When the President Talks to God by Bright Eyes on iTunes? It's a pretty good song, and I'm fairly sure it's not been on any albums.

my advice, go for a one hit wonder band. you'd probably end up buying their album for that one song anyway.
for me it's "Time Is Running out" by Muse and "Song 2" by Blur.

looking through my library now, "What It's Like" by Everlast is a really great song.

Sorry, I'm giving you ideas of songs I love, but what kind of music do you like?

one more thing... cool name.

I knew Blur were only a one-hitter in America, but didn't know Muse were. Amusing that Blur were one of Britain's biggest bands in the 90s and Muse are one of the biggest bands in the world right now.

Think of a band you love, think of a single they released, get the b-side?

The fact that you said Blur is a one hit wonder means I won't take your advice, because you clearly have never listened to any of their albums.

If it helps you all tell me about singles, b-sides, or outtakes you think I should download, some of my favorite bands are: Deerhoof, Yo La Tengo, Boards of Canada, Phish...you know, basically, indie rock and IDM (do people still use this term??).

Album-length tracks! Morton Feldman's "For Samuel Beckett" and John Coltrane's "Ascension".

If you don't already have Mogwai's "My Father, My King" single, I highly recommend it as THE BEST thing they have ever done.

Except the last one, which I think is a new one, and isn't really worth anyone's time. And the second half of 'Tender.'

Uh, a one-hit wonder is a band that had one hit. It doesn't mean they didn't have any other good songs or a good album. In the United States, Blur IS a one-hit wonder because they had ONE song that hit the Top Forty-Song 2. One hit song, no other top forty songs, thus: one hit wonder.

If you do want to go one-hitters, Come On Eileen by Dexy's Midnight Runners is the best song ever. Failing that, The Unicorns put out an EP a while ago with two versions of one song-2014. Get both versions.

God, stop fucking saying Blur. I own some of their albums. I don't need any of their singles. Think more obscure and more indie. I was hoping somebody would find some hidden gem b-side by Destroyer or the Eels that I didn't know about because I'm not a fanatic of either band.

Anyway, I disagree with the one hit wonder label because I only use it for bands who had one hit song and also suck ass because of/in spite of that hit song. Going by a strict "only had one hit in the U.S." then Frank Zappa and the Grateful Dead are one hit wonders, thus in the same category as New Radicals and Right Said Fred and that dog don't hunt, monsieur.

that's just my personal taste, i'm not recommending those to you. the idea was all i suggested.

and muse isn't a one hit wonder, but that's that only song of theirs that I like.

Lemon Jelly - Nice Weather for Ducks

I second, third, fourth and fifth this song.

Either nice weather for ducks, or space walk.
Both brilliant.

Also, if you are into phish and grateful dead, maybe some phil lesh and friends?

Or find the fantomas album "delirium cordia" its just one track, goes for about 75 minutes i think.

Well, I can only download the $.99 songs, not the ones that iTunes labels as "buy the album to hear this because it's too long."

well this is sort of obvious and not terribly obscure.

but if you don't have it its really good.

get the shins covering We Will Become Silhouttes

its really good, but you prolly already have it since its the oldest thing in the world.

Don't forget about the brand-new "complete my album" feature.  Solves that problem.

I'm only quoting this again because I hate when I get misconstrued. I wasn't recommending that band- I hate that band. If you had read my post, you would have seen that I recommended two Unicorns songs (one song, technically, just different recordings). My only argument was that your definition of what we were discussing is wrong, basically, and I had disdain for what I took to be attitude in the quote you posted about him obviously never hearing an album by them, which was totally irrelevant.

Me arguing what is and what is not a "one-hit wonder" is stupid though, so I will say this: There is a live cover of Life on Mars? by Arcade Fire and David Bowie that is pretty rad that is available on iTunes.

I'm seconding this one.  I don't think it gets too much more obscure than Morton Feldman (maybe it does, I just had not heard of him until maybe a year ago).  I may suggest Coptic Light by him as well.

Should have gone with Interpol's "The Specialist".  Best song they've done, and it's not really worth buying the EP just for that song.

Matador At 15, I assume. So many great tracks. "Graceland" is a fixture for my mixes.
