Eh.  Spiderland isn't all that bad, but I'd much rather have a new For Carnation album.  That self-titled one kicked Spiderland's ass.

Hell, Pajo's Live From a Shark Cage was better than Spiderland, for that matter.

I already saw them play 'Spiderland' and most of the stuff from 'Tweez' too.

Sorry but it's true.

You know what else is better than Spiderland?  Everything Mogwai and Mono have ever done.

Yeah, I went there.

spiderland is more significant than anything those groups have done though.
don't get me wrong, i fricking love mogwai and mono (who are absurdly great live btw) but spiderland is an important album and to be honest the same could not be said for anything in the m&m discog.

I think "importance" is an overrated trait for an album to have.

Go back and listen to Spiderland and try to remove all the baggage connected to its legendary status.  Just listen to how it sounds.  I used to swear by it until I finally listened to it with open ears and realized that "Washer" and "Good Morning Captain" were basically the only two great songs on it.  I came to terms with "Nosferatu Man" being a fairly boring metal song.  I realized just how totally shitty the production and mixing are.  Etc.

As for Mogwai and Mono, I would certainly say that Young Team and You Are There should be considered as "important" as Spiderland.  The former by virtue of innovation, the latter by virtue of simply being so completely perfect in its execution.

i was actually agreeing with you. i prefer most of what mogwai and mono have done to spiderland, and i thought tweez was horrendous. the fact is though, that spiderland is considered a more important album, baggage or no, and again the fact remains that mono and mogwai have no released anything really "important," deserving or no. certainly great music though.
i'm not really trying to defend spiderland. there are others who can do that better than i if they care to and like i said i think mogwai and mono have put out a lot better stuff. but spiderland will probably always be held up on a pedastal and to be honest it is a pretty excellent album.

Yeah, Tweez was really really bad.

People just pick the weirdest albums to revere.  Like Loveless - for my money, Souvlaki should be revered just as much.  For that matter, Psychocandy came out years before Loveless and yet always gets second mention.

i'm not sure i agree with the hype surrounding my bloody valentine in general. my friend is completly enamored with loveless and i've listened through it a bunch of times and.....meh. some of the songs were downright bad and the one's that weren't didn't strike me as anything too spectacular. i understand it was a pretty revolutionary step forward and i see why it's praised but....for me it's just another mediocre album.

If by that photo comparison you mean that Loveless is more polished and pretty but would be less interesting to hang out in, then I totally agree with you.
