<-- Guilty. Also, I just unlocked the Bauer and I'm definitely liking it. My friend tells me the Voss is alot better though. Why does the good gun always have the crappy skill tree? (pilum, bauer, sniper)
The pilum tree is for those that like to get inside of the vehicle. The defuser means you can get out and defuse the damn motion mines if you have to, and the detector comes in super-handy in some of the larger armor maps (attach it to your vehicle). They fixed it so that it doesn't screw up commander UAV's anymore, either, which makes it viable. I stick it on the bottom of my gunship and fly around, seeking easy armor targets. I rarely spawn with motion mines even though I have them, because I'm usually sitting in my tank/walker/etc doing as I've outlined.
The only crappy tree for any kit is the sniper tree for recon. It's a totally worthless gun, and the scope stabilizer is crapola. The default sniper rifle is better in every way, except that it can't destroy APMs. It's more accurate and has more bullets. Sure they don't do as much damage, but a headshot is an instant kill anyway. I wish I hadn't gone past the Netbat for the kit, because I'm regretting spending two unlocks.
