If Microsoft had designed the iPod
« on: 28 Dec 2006, 21:21 »

I was reading an article on SLate.com about really bad ad campaigns, and somehow found my way to this link.  It's a video made by MS employees, using actual quotes from meetings that they've been in, guessing what the end result would be if the iPod had been a Microsoft product.

Might be a better fit, now that you mention it.  Mods, if you wouldn't mind moving this for me please?  Thanks!

Well, Microsoft designed the Zune. Isn't that close enough?

I think the idea was to compare the stark aesthetics and minimalist approach of the Apple packaging with the brand-whoring that plasters everything Microsoft does.

I kind of like the minimalist approach better.

When I saw this I thought "wow, this looks professional," then I found out it was an MS training exercise thing as 10101110 says and it all clicked into place.  Whether it be directly related to this video or not I have a feeling that the Zune's lack of flashiness reflects a deliberate decision to move away from this kind of over-the-top style.

To me, nothing says brand whoring like including a sticker with your product to tell everyone you buy that product.

I don't know, I'm kinda of staying away from the Ipod for the simple reason I heard this guy said in the user agreement when you buy your ipod, if apple finds a song they don't like, they can take it off your ipod.

or something like that, forgot exactly.

Also, I don't trust microsoft products (but don't tell my OS >.>; ), so thats why I get a Creative Zen mp3 player. I've dropped it once, and it's fine, so it's been holding up very well. Where I live, ipods are more of an image statement then anything else. Those "cool" moms even have one. Note: I'm not dissing anyone that owns one.

Someone told you that Apple, the company, has direct access to your iPod, and that someone over in the "Apple Critic Department" would care enough to search over your iPod and remove that Killers album you guiltily ripped? And you believed him?

I got a big kick out of that video when I first saw it, especially since, as est pointed out, Microsoft seems to be conforming to Apple's minimalist approach, which is ironic when you consider who's been bitmarking who.

Dang I phrased that wrong. rofl (I tend to do that a lot~)

I was gonna add in between the I'm staying away part, and what the guy told me, to say it's way to expensive, even for like 4 GBs. Sure, it's tiny, but I don't feel like paying $200 for an ipod, when I got my own mp3 player (20GB) for the same price.

Sorry if I messed my post up x.x

Unless of course they're going for the smart approach, and are gonna let out some nifty covers.

Like the 360. Then maybe more people would buy it.

But then again, who knows?

I like the ipod design, just not the fact that it doesnt work. If apple had released a product that worked, my opinion would have been different, but design means nothing when the product is non-functional, alot like vista.

I'm staying away from the iPod because I'm a cranky old codger who prefers carrying around a stack of cd's and a Discman.

I'm staying away from the Discman because I can wind up my phonograph perfectly well as it is, thank you.

Damn, dude, why you always gotta be cuttin' me down like that?  Besides, my Gregorian chants from deep within the halls of the monastary beats your silly phonograph any day!

My cave man drumming on the cave walls with the bones of my enemies beats your Gregorian chants any day.

Only iPod that I've even considered buying is the new iPod Shuffle.

(I love the disclaimer that was on the Apple website for the old Shuffle: "Do not eat Apple iPod Shuffle")

And I totally already busted her for it! GAWD!
And, I see the validity of remarks against the iPod's longevity. I try to help out as much as I can around the Apple Discussion forums, and there are as many unique problems as an Elder Scrolls H&S forum, and that's saying quite a bit. When the iPod was first introduced, it was seen as an audio device for audiophiles and geeks, and the latter still holds up somewhat today: you take care of your iPod, and it will take care of your ears.

The Zune isn't half bad.  Too big for me, which is why I have a Sansa e280.  Tiny, 8GB, plays videos, and wasn't made by Apple.  (I'm very anti-Apple/anti-Sony.)

It's one of the songs from the soundtrack to Pee Wee's Big Adventure, by Danny Elfman. "Breakfast Machine" apparently. If it sounds thematically similar to the Simpson's theme, it's because Elfman does the music for that show, too.
