Jeph,

Since you mentioned your fav guitar in the News today ("... telecaster-style Cobra with a solid rosewood neck hlgblugblhlgbh." Tuesday, January 9th, 2007).
Thought I'd mention mine. Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty with two sets of switchable pickups -- Fenders near the neck and Humbuckers near the bridge.  <drool>  Anyone know whose guitar this was and on what album they played it to perfection?

Cheers.
- Jimbo

Ahaha, don't even get me started here. From what I can pull from the top of my head, the guitar you're thinking of is a Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite. I don't believe Gibson ever made stock LP Customs with Fender-style single coil pickups.

Classics:
1972 Fender Telecaster Deluxe
1954 Gibson Les Paul Custom (two P-90s)
1958 Gibson Les Paul plain top
1961 Gretsch Duo Jet
1962 Fender Jazzmaster, foam green, matching headstock
1957 Gibson Les Paul Junior (TV Yellow)
1956 Gretsch Jet Firebird
1969 Fender Telecaster Thinline
1957 Gibson Les Paul goldtop
1953 Harmony Stratotone H-44
Johnny Ramone's modded Mosrite Mark II
1965 Gibson Firebird I
Brian May's Red Special
1964 Electro ES-17

The last decade or so:
Fender Telesonic
Fender American Vintage '62 Jazzmaster
ESP EC-400 archtop
Ibanez AR-300
Gibson Firebird Studio
Gretsch Malcom Young II
Eastwood Airline 2P Deluxe
Fender 1972 Telecaster Deluxe Reissue

No, not The Knack.  (Nice cover, though).
And you're right, valley_parade, it wasn't "stock."

I adore most Telecasters - that are Fender or Squier made, I hate the copies because they warp the shape; even the headstock is part of it to me - excluding pretty much just Thinlines. I can't think of any others off the top of my head.

However, the holy grail for me would be an Esquire. THAT would be sweet.

Fender came out with a new Esquire at 2005's NAMM. You can find them online for about US$620-650 brand new.

Well I sure as hell don't, so I guess once I can I'll just get an old school one. And then I'll crank it up to within an inch of its life and play lead lines so razor-sharp it'll make your ears bleed.

I am quite partial to my Takamine acoustic.  They make nice guitars!

However, I think if I could only pick three I'd really like:

http://www.seagullguitars.com/products6.htm <- Seagull S6

http://www.gibson.com/Products/GibsonElectric/Gibson%20Electric%20Guitars/LesPaul/ <- Gibson Les Paul (I'll take any of 'em)

and my personal coup de grace:
http://www.fender.com/products/search.php?partno=0109200800 <- Stevie Ray Vaughan Tribute Stratocaster.

And no, not Randy Rhodes.  Good try, though.

Sorry, I'm probably just too old school for you guys on this one (Yes, that's a hint).

By the way, THIS is the original "stock" Gibons I was referring to. Sweet.

Ibanez Mike D'Antonio signature bass

Yamaha Billy Sheehan signature

The Drifter

[quote="Sonic Youth gear archive]

NOTES:

# The Drifter was in Sonic Youth's arsenal for nearly 20 years. Originally a cheap 6-string, in the mid-80s the frets were torn out and the guitar was strung up with bass strings and used exclusively by Thurston on Eric's Trip up until July 4th, 1999, when the guitar was stolen in California.
# Gauges: .056 .056 x x .042 .042
# Black Les Paul style body
# Originally played as a 6-string, typically with a cowbell for "She's in a Bad Mood" (see "SONIC DEATH" liners) or drumsticks for "Burning Spear".
# All frets removed in mid-80s
# Strung up with 4 bass strings in mid-80s
# 2 E tuners removed
# 2 drumsticks used for "Eric's Trip" typically wedged under strings
# "SONIC" sticker on headstock
# Sticker w/ Elvis on a U.S.A. flag
# Dayglo Tiger sticker (?), similar to Kimberly guitar

Just to throw a guess out there..Dave Davies from The Kinks?

Well, the player I was looking for was... (Aw surely your guessed it?)  Jeff Beck.  I first heard his album "Blow by Blow" in 1975 and wore out the grooves on it.  Absolutely amazing to listen to his phrasing work on "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" with that guitar.

I want to guess Page but I've got this odd little nagging feeling like YOU want me to guess Page so you can be all "LOL FAG"

I'm on to you.

Page's Black Beauty had 3 Gibson double-coil pickups and was stolen shortly after their January 9, 1970 concert at Royal Albert Hall, if I'm not mistaken. I'm pretty sure it was stolen on that tour, in any case.

I have plenty of guitars left on my list:

- Gibson SG Standard in cherry red
- Fender 1962 reissue Jaguar in ocean turquoise (getting her this summer, if all goes according to plans)
- Gibson EDS-1275 in cherry red. Nothing like a 12-string electric, they sound amazing (see "Under The Hedge" by Ted Leo and the Pharmacists)
- Fender American Telecaster (Alan Jackson's guitarist is awesome)
- Fender American Stratocaster (Dire Straits self-titled album. 'Nuff said)
- Takamine 12-string acoustic

I would also like to hotrod my '02 Johnson Shitocaster by putting some actual Fender parts in her.
