I have to say my absolute favorite electric guitars are Fender telecasters. I bought a mexican, wine red tele last May and wouldn't trade it for ANYTHING. I've borrowed some electric guitars to perform priced well into four digits that I wouldn't switch it for. That thick sound with the pickups, the neck, and even the color are absolutely perfect.

Runner up though is the Gibson ES-335. I love that tone. Although, I would almost as quickly buy an Epiphone version, as the high end of Epiphone ES copies are extremely similar and a better value. The price jump to Gibson really hasn't shown me that much of an advantage, especially for poor, student-art-rocker that I am. While the sound and neck are a bit better, it's not worth the money-jump if you ask me.

Bass is definitely the four-string Fender jazz bass. In black. It has a nice thick tone, and the neck is brilliant. Although my bass teacher recently turned me on to Lakeland basses, which I've played on a few times to great success, but I'll still go back to Fender. With bass, I've really found that once you reach a certain point in rock music, it's more about what kind of amp setup you're rockin'. Peavy and Hartke have treated me extremely well.

Acoustic guitars is where I like to go the expensive route. Any Martin or Taylor guitar that plugs in is great by me. Given unlimited funds, I'd rock the most expensive Taylor available with electronic setup.

Les Pauls have really small bodies, but they are heavy as all hell. With that weight and the wide neck, they feel kind of bulky when you're first playing them, interestingly enough. At least that's what I've found.

I am no doubt in wholehearted support of the ES-335 fans in this thread. My mate's dad has one from somewhere around the mid-70s (bought her new) and has kept her absolutely stock. She sounds absolutely perfect in any setting. She's especially good for playing Ted Leo, since he played a Gibson with a dual-humbucker setup and used that lovely pickup blending. Hell, I think he even used a 335, I'll have to go back and look at the YouTube videos of him live.

In any case, someday I will have myself a 335 and it will be a goddamn gem and I'll never trade her for anything.

Most pictures I've seen of Ted are with an Epiphone Sheraton, although he does also bust out the 335.

I'm getting the new Gibson Melody Maker soon. Vintageeeeey. Also only $350. So depending on prices, I might also get a Fender Champion 600 amp, or an Epi Valve Junior head/cab.

I'm planning on purchasing an Epiphone Casino soon, and I was wondering if anyone else thinks this is a good decision. I haven't gotten a chance to play one as such, but I played an Epiphone Les Paul in the same price range, and so I figure playability and craftsmanship-wise, both axes would be at about the same level.

This is what I'm going to buy this summer. I don't know which colour I should go for. I'm more into the first one but it doesn't really match anything I own to wear. I'm okay with getting the Olympic white one, too, but that's such a frequently-occuring colour now thanks to Hendrix's Strat at Woodstock '69.

Wasnt jaco's bass of doom, a sunburst jazz, with the pickguard removed?
And also had the knobs replaced with the knurled metal ones?

Something along the lines of what the jaco relic bass was modeled after?

Yeah. I Just used a stock 62 Jazz. My bad. But that IS the same guitar. Just a different color.

Jaco played 2 basses. A 1960 Fender Jazz Bass with frets, and a 1962 Fender Jazz Bass with the frets removed, and the neck epoxied.

This made the neck smooth, and kept the Rotosound strings from eating the neck.

Only two things are keeping me from being a great guitar player: a complete lack of talent and a complete lack of ability. Other than those two things, though...

He replaced the original neck on that bass to a 60's Precision bass neck. So it would be harder to practice on.
He also said that he uses the fretless for recording and shows only, becuae the strings eat up the neck.

Flat Wound strings are the best. I dont think I'll go back to regular strings for my Jazz bass. I love that sound.

Also, I'm looking into buying a fretless white 80's Japanese Jazz Bass for about US$800. It's well worth it, I'm just not sure if I have the money.

Burns guitars are awesome, they have that whole 70's Japanese vibe to them, with the reverse bodies, and warped bodies that avoid law suits, and cramming as many different bits of pickguard/switching and pickups on as possible.

Although that one not so much, you know what i mean.

Yeah, I want to get the darker one, but I only have a few 'outfits' or whatever that it would look good with, and they would look bad against my red sunburst fake Les Paul and my navy blue Squier Bullet. Blue clothing with red is a bad combination and blue clothing with blue makes the damn thing disappear.

Pat, you have the same Squier I do. Only all I have left of mine is a sticker covered, beat to shit body and the neck. I'm going to attempt to fix it this summer.

I've always wanted one of the shirts that said "I am a rocker. I rock out." But I've just never gotten around to it.

My second favourite guitar would probably have to be a strat with overwound (Mmm, mid range) single coils all the way through. I can't stand these friggin' things with humbuckers in the bridge. Gotta be a rosewood fretboard, some sort of graphite/graph-tech nut, a high quality trem and some good tuning machines.

My favourite guitar will always and forever be the guitar I built:

Three piece mahogany body (it's GIGANTIC). I used three pieces so that I could set it up so that the pickups are in the centre of a board, rather than over a glue joint.
One piece mahogany neck with rosewood fretboard and jumbo frets. Kinda wish I had used smaller frets though.
Some sort of Grover tuners, I'm going to replace them with locking tuners some time in the next few months.
DiMarzio Breed(Neck) in... you guessed it, the neck position (sexiest sound EVAR)
DiMarzio Tone Zone in the bridge (also very sexy, but neck pickups FTW)
Wilkinson trem with locking saddles. Note, these don't lock the strings, just the saddles so your intonation will stay stable while changing strings.
Special 5-way pickup switch set so it can do coil splits in positions 2 and 4.
Expanded cutaway for playing on high frets. The Xplorer has always felt somewhat restrictive on the high frets.
I can send pictures of it if anyone wants to see it.

Of course I also want like a thousand billion other guitars. I'll end up like Nigel Tufnel in Spinal Tap, I'll have guitars that have never been played. Ever.

I'm building a guitar with my dad. I needs teh munnees for all the different specialty parts *sigh* but here's basically how it's going to go:

The shape is of my own design, but very Fender-esque with the offset body, and intended to accomodate a Mustang bridge and a Jaguar tailpiece. She's going to have two noiseless neck-position P-90s in both the neck and the bridge so I can have the heavier midrange that The Thrill mentioned with the Strat. Pickup switch is going to be a 3-position snap slider, and the knobs are going to be 2 sets of 2-knob 2-pot stacks. The top knob is going to be volume and the bottom is going to be tone. Jackplate is going to be a reversed Strat jackplate on the bottom of the body (reversed to reduce wear on the instrument cable when I loop it through my strap).

It is going to be epic.

P-90s are always a great choice i think.

And im not sure how to change the constraints in this crazy forum code.

Thats a guitar made by Scott French, I really like his work, and think the jackplate at the back is a great idea, how often when you play on stage do you face your amp? Never. So it makes sense it be at the back.
If placed correctly, it wont stab into you when you play sitting down, and with your offset body, that shouldn't be a problem.

That is indeed a cool jackplate design. Just by looking at it though, I don't know how comfortable it'd be... it looks like the cable would be kindof poking at you if the hardened bit of the cable is long enough. I use Planet Waves cables and the hardened bit sticks out quite a ways. I think I may even end up putting a Strat jackplate the normal way on the side of the guitar to where it comes out of the plate with the cable pointing up so that I really have no choice but to loop it through my strap.

So it's the summer of 2003, I save up my hard earned money and go down to the local shop, where thar be a 1973 Fender Mustang. Ugliest piece of shit I'd ever seen. Sonic blue finish faded to green, racing stripes faded to a creamy-yellowish, tortioseshell pickguard, body all dinged up..love at first sight.

I didn't have enough money at the time..come back the next week with the proper $450 and it's been sold. =/

I ended up with an Epiphone based off an old Gibson Firebird III. It's..quirky to say the least. I love it.

Are the ?20 junior sized classical starter guitars that they hand you in primary school. So much fun to play. More fun to play than any other guitar I've ever played.

My favorite guitar is my acoustic bass guitar. Its a fretted four string by la bella. They make mostly classical strings but also a very few basses. It is beautiful and has amazing resonance. It is kind of big though...
