2007 Albums??
« on: 23 Jan 2007, 21:09 »

So we're officially into the first quarter of 2007 and these things called albums are getting released again. So far, which new ones do you like and not like?? And why?? What are you looking forward to??

Checking the release schedule on metacritic, there is a fuckton of music I'm looking forward to that may come out this year. Also, I plan on picking up the new Shins and Deerhoof albums in about an hour.

Nothing has been released so far this year that has caught my attention, but that seems to be the norm for me.  I am looking forward to new albums by Neurosis, Jesu, Pig Destroyer, The Red Chord, and my friends in The Pax Cecilia will be releasing their new one later this spring that in all seriousness is probably already a strong contendor for my favorite album of the year, it's that damned good.  As soon as they've posted tracks online, I'll link for you guys to check out.

I gave it a listen and it really didn't stick with me, but I think that a lot of folks here may enjoy Aereogramme's new one, "My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go."  It's scheduled to come out next month.

Come on people, Britney's coming back. BRITNEY-fucking-SPEARS.

Personally, I'm exicted for the new Of Montreal, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, El-P, Pelican, Aqualung and Motion City Sountrack albums due out this year. Also, are Iggy & The Stooges putting out an album this year or that just a rumour?

EDIT: I forgot Air!

New Metallica album (wait I said that last year didn't I?) and the new Megadeth album. Megadeth are supposedly doing a cover of 'Out on the Tiles' I really hope they don't screw it up as badly as when they covered Anarchy in the UK.

Also new Bloc Party album. After hearing their new single Im anticipating an album at least as good as their debut.

I am not really up on what albums get released untill they come out and I can buy them, but I must admit, it looks like every local Prog-metal band I am obsessed with is putting something out this year, so I'm definately looking forward to that.

Aside from that, the only thing I know of, due to massive hyping is the new Radiohead album, which I am looking forward to, in theory.

i wanna hear the new modest mouse, amiina, clap your hands say yeah!, arcade fire, possibly (very slim chance) the new sigur ros will come out, and maybe the new radiohead, and i really wanna hear the new menomena (their 1st was amazing). i doubt i'll like 'em all, especially CYHSY! (which i've heard bad things about here and elsewhere) but i wanna hear 'em all nonetheless.

i've already heard the new explosions in the sky, eluvium, the shins, and do make say think. the eits album is their best yet i think. it's all around a better crafted album and it's pretty darn excellent. the eluvium album is very nice. it's a departure from his more recent work in that it doesn't rely on the distorted guitars/peddles. instead it's a lot of strings and piano and brass instruments. not my favorite (i prefered the guitar stuff) but it's still very good and 'prelude for time feelers' is a flat out beautiful song. the new do make say think is nothing extremly special. it's very nice and i really enjoy it but it's not especially memorable. still well worth looking at for any fans though and i wouldn't call it a dissapointment in any sense. finally the new shins is fairly bland and, in fact, is at times a little grating. i don't mind it and it has some worthwhile tracks but as a whole it's just....meh. not too different from their other albums really (although i'd say it might be their worst. not sure, i haven't listened to it enough to say).

New Wolf Parade is the one I'm most excited about.  Then there's also LCD Soundsystem, Low, The Stooges, Maximo Park, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Animal Collective, Bjork, Feist, Final Fantasy, Islands, Ghostface/MF Doom, Madvillain, Massive Attack, Modest Mouse, New Pornographers, Polyphonic Spree, and according to metacritic, a new Stars album!

I'm going to be buying a lot of records this year just based on good reviews and word of mouth, because I want to cast my net a bit wider than I did last year.

So far the only ones I have are Shins, Deerhoof, and Menomena.

Shins sounded great but inferior to Chutes Too Narrow, Deerhoof didn't really draw me in on the first listen (But I was half asleep at the time so I still might love it), and Menomena sounded like your standard above average indie fare.

Right now the albums I have marked for 'buy' that have specific release dates are:  Lily Allen, CYHSY, Lucinda Williams, Arcade Fire, Fountains of Wayne, Bright Eyes.

Dinosaur Jr is supposed to come out with an album this year I think.  I'm excited because it's Lou, Murph and J together again.  Speaking of J, his new doom metal band Witch is releasing an album on March 7th, which I will probably pick up.

After a handful of spins...

The new Deerhoof is fan-fucking-tastic. If you like them at all, you will like this album. It's pretty much nothing like The Runners Four, which is startling. Lots of keyboards, drum machines, production details all over the place...it's great.

The new Shins album is also fan-fucking-tastic. Anyone, professional reviewer or otherwise, who says the album isn't a significant depature from their first two albums IS DEAF. This album puts much more of a premium on texture, nuance, and subtlety; it doesn't go for the indie pop jugular. Frankly the worst songs on it are the most 'traditional.' Maybe I'm the only person who said "yeah, those first two albums were great, but they were only a half hour a piece of mostly similar music and they really need to try something new", but I got my wish with this album. You won't be singing and humming these songs all day long, but it's inarguably a more satisfying listen for it. Wincing The Night Away is a grower if there ever was one.

p.s. I'll be seeing Deerhoof this weekend in Chicaguh, and I'm ever so curious as to how they're going to pull off the Friend Opportunity songs live.

working through the new menomena as i type this and boy howdy is it good. 'i am the fun blame monster' was damn good and terribly underappreciated i think. hopefully the second of those two won't be true of this one too, b/c so far it's really great.

The only album I can speak to so far is Friend Opportunity, which leaves me speechless. I've been listening to it for several months now though:

The new Deerhoof is fan-butternuting-tastic. If you like them at all, you will like this album. It's pretty much nothing like The Runners Four, which is startling. Lots of keyboards, drum machines, production details all over the place...it's great.

Its actually not super surprising, when Cohen left they lost a guitar. They now have a sound thats closer to pre-Cohen albums in a lot of ways. Its definitely their tighest album, the melodies and shifts are also a lot more subtle. Maybe their most accessible too. Accessible is subjective of course :-)

Also "Look Away" !!!

i really want the new 'from the sky,' 'american dollar music,' and 'pirate ship quintet' whenever they decide to come out (actually i think the 1st two might be, they're just hard to find). it's gonna be a good music overload over the next few months.

btw, has anyone seen menomena live? they're playing a week or so after my birthday in NYC and it would be my 1st 18+ (finally). i love 'em but i have no clue how they are live. worth seeing?

edit: just finished the album. it's definetly very good. after one listen i prefer 'IATFBM' but i need to give this one a few more listens before i can really past judgement. still, i liked what i heard quite a lot. i personally would say their sound is more unique and interesting than "standard above average indie fare." anyway, check it out if you haven't already (although i'd start with their 1st, then give this one a go, and then move onto to the really excellent 'under an hour' for something completley different).

So far?  I've not really bought anything yet that has come out in 2007, though there will be a pile to get to.  What am I most looking forward to?

Skinny Puppy -Mythmaker (Jan. 30)
Client - Zerox Machine (Feb. 6)
Jesu - Conquerer (Feb. 20)
Combichrist - What the Fuck is Wrong With You? (Mar. 3)
Assemblage 23 - Meta (April)
I, Parasite - The Sick Are Not Healing (sometime 2007)
Throbbing Gristle - Infinite Knot (April 1)

And in the 'curious, but waiting to see department':
NIN - Year Zero (April)

So far I can't say that anything has blown me away. However, the Broken West Record that I reviewed was pretty good.

I'm most looking forward to

Radiohead
Bright Eyes
Wilco
The Arcade Fire

There is not a whole lot that could contain my joy that these four albums are coming out this year.

Also, Modest Mouse, but I am less straight-out pumped for it.

Good news! though I honestly didn't expect anything less.

I have found a new release to look forward to: Beneath the Massacre - Mechanics of Dysfunction on the 20th of February.
The single Society's Disposable Son is quite good. The only doubts I have are as to whether they can vary it enough, this sort of speedy disjointed dm attack would probably get tiresome over a whole album.

We should be so lucky.

Well four years will be like, the longest gap he's left between albums, like...ever. He's been recording more or less non-stop since the Sixties.

And Heathen was amazing.

I'm also waiting for the new Rush album

New rush you say... do go on...

I don't know about albums this year.
I bought one album last year that was released last year, and that was The Mars Volta's "Amputechture", which i was pretty dissapointed in.

I guess we'll see what happens this year.
