Sloan. Sloan, my friends. Sloan.
« on: 26 Jan 2007, 08:52 »

I'm listening to the "party disc" from One Chord to Another for the first time in years.  This is a band that is so criminally ignored everywhere outside of Canada.  OK, they put out a couple mediocre albums (Pretty Together and Action Pact) but everything else they've done is amazing, especially Between the Bridges, One Chord to Another, and Twice Removed.  I hear the new album is great but do not yet have it.

Anyway, if you don't know who they are, they are a very pop-oriented rock band who, depending on the album, can remind you of shoegazer, the Beatles, AC/DC, the Who, and many others, all done with a true "indie rock" sensibility.  Check them out if you don't know about them.

The new album is okay but it's so much - around thirty songs, mostly short - that it's almost indigestible. They're a formidable live act, though. If you have the chance to see them I would recommend it highly. As an aside, I thought Pretty Together was really good. It came across as mediocre because their previous albums (especially Twice Removed, what a superb record) were so uniformly fantastic.

True.  Pretty Together was just disappointing for being a step down from Between the Bridges which was such a fresh and exciting sound for them.

I just now noticed that they sort-of cover a bit of a Stereolab song near the end of the party disc.  Awesome.

What do you mean by "party disc," can I ask? I only have the regular retail version and it only came with the one disc.

Quote:

One Chord To Another was not released until 1997 in the United States on the independent label, The Enclave. It was originally released in an LP-style cardboard gatefold jacket rather than a traditional plastic jewel box, and included a 10-track bonus CD of material entitled Recorded Live At A Sloan Party! This bonus CD consisted of cover versions and re-recordings of previous Sloan songs; it was recorded in the studio but was overdubbed with miscellaneous party-type sounds to give the impression of being recorded live at an intimate gathering of friends (somewhat akin to the Beach Boys' Party! album). To this date the "Sloan Party" CD has not been released in the band's native Canada and has only been available as an American import.

1 Let's Get The Party Started – 2:28
2 I Can Feel It – 3:54 (Sloan)
3 Dignified and Old – 3:12 (Jonathan Richman)
4 Glitter and Gold – 3:02 (Barry Mann / Cynthia Weil)
5 Over You – 3:20 (Bryan Ferry / Phil Manzanera)
6 I Am the Cancer – 3:22 (Chris Murphy)
7 I Can't Let Go – 2:35 (Al Gorgoni / Chip Taylor)
8 Stood Up – 3:28 (Matthew Grimson)
9 On the Road Again / Transona Five – 4:42 (Tim Gane / Floyd Jones / Laetitia Sadier / Alan Wilson)
10 I Wouldn't Want To Lose Your Love – 5:45 (Myles Goodwyn)

Unquote.

The version of "I Am the Cancer", acoustic, is particularly good, but really the whole thing is just amazing.

I like how the thread title contains the band's name 3 times. It shows enthusiasm, or something?

If you're trying to be a dick, you're doing it wrong.  You need to be more like this:

"I like how your mom let me put it in 3 of her holes.  Now that's enthusiasm!"

Maybe I'm doing it wrong because I'm... not trying to be a dick?

I heard "Who Taught You To Live Like That" on the radio last night, or at least the first half of it, and I quite liked it.

I liked the conversation that went on between my two friends as well.  (Paraphrased.)

"This has a nice classic-rock vibe to it."
"Yeah, but if I want to listen to classic rock, I'll listen to classic rock."
"Oh fuck you.  That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard you say about music.  Get the fuck out of here.  Like nothing you listen to doesn't reference a thousand different things."
"Well, yeah, but there's a difference between sidelong references and imitation."
"Fuck you.  If I want to listen to new wave electropop I'll listen to the fucking Talking Heads.  Asshole."

And smiles were on every face the whole way through!

I prefer the second single off the album, "Ill Placed Trust." It's basically balls-to-the-wall total rock action.
