BELLE AND SEBASTIAN DISCUSSION

Well, what is your favorite album? Definitely one of my favorite bands at the moment. Well, here's the order for me (according to the albums I have):

1. If You're Feeling Sinister
2. The Life Pursuit
3. Tigermilk
4. Dear Catastrophe Waitress (I actually haven't givent his a full listen yet)

Last night i dreampt that B&S and a few other bands were on a label run by two people (a husband and wife), and they tried to give me a sampler CD but i told them i was already into B&S, so i spent the rest of the dream helping them brainstorm B&S songs to put on a compilation CD to appeal to an 'adult contemporary' audience. i think i got as far as "I'm a Cuckoo".

they're okay live, i think. many of their songs ('Belle & Sebestian', 'Put The Book Back On The Shelf', 'Sleep The Clock Around') describe my life way too accuartly

according to a girl i know from Glasgow tourists take photos in front of Stuart Murdoch's house

"Sleep the Clock Around" is probably my favorite song. Ditto what Eyeball Kid said about it though.

and I really like quite a lot of the songs on The Life Pursuit.

The Life Pursuit fits in kind of weirdly in their catalogue. It's probably their most direct, almost raucous album - "Sukie In The Graveyard," anyone? - and yet, despite being nowhere near as pastoral as previous releases, it's definitely Belle & Sebastian. I think you've about got the order right, as far as I can tell. The Push Barman... collection is so big that it has to contain a few missteps, but it's worth the investment for songs like "Judy Is A Dick Slap."

Belle and Sebastian used to bemy favourite band and i still love them to death.

I guess for me the order goes (this week):

1.- Jonathan David EP (now, i'm not going to list all the singles and eps here, but this is hands down my favourite records of theirs)
2.- Dear Catastrophe Waitress

4.- If You Are Feeling Sinister
5.- The Life Pursuit

Who here has listened to the Live at the Barbican (or whatever, you know what I mean) version of If You're Feeling Sinister? The original is my favorite period. And hearing the live version, it bothers me when people start cheering near the end of "Mayfly" after the false stop.

That said, I think their early material is brilliant. I must admit that Dear Catastrophe Waitress ranks pretty low on my list, although I do enjoy The Life Pursuit and it's sunny, AM pop ways.

I remember hearing a track review of "Funny Little Frog" saying that no one would ever need to parody this band, seeing as that track is such an effective parody already. I don't really agree, but what does everyone else say?

Oh, and does anyone else out there simply love "Century of Elvis" so much? Such Velvet Underground homage, if you ask me.

I think the live version is in many ways superior to the original one. Not only are they a more confident now, but the recording on the studio album is atrocious.

Honestly, I don't know. I started off with "If You're Feeling Sinister" and "The Life Pursuit". So try those? :]

I love B&S, and so does my best friend, Dave, but all the women we've ever dated have never liked B&S. I don't know what that means, but you could probably insert a joke about how B&S are too wussy and effeminate for even women to listen to and that'd be fine.

I don't think that's quite true at all. Belle & Sebastian aren't really wimpy, I find.

Speaking of the earlier stuff, the music was certainly quieter than most others, sung in soft voices and all. Still, the songs are filled with strong, defiant characters who, while lacking direction, make up for it with more drinking, smoking, and sex than you'll find than you'll find this side of a Van Halen album.

The later we go, of course, the less true this becomes. We get to the the point where the new album is mostly cheery love songs and tunes so happy it borders on obscene.

Does the live version of the title-track include the sounds of the children playing in the background? Because, unbearably twee though it is, for me that's what makes the track.

I'm curious as to why not very many people like Storytelling. Seriously if you ignore the clips from the movie and such, it actually has some great songs. Fuck this shit, storytelling, big john shaft...
