Rogue Galaxy
« on: 05 Feb 2007, 04:16 »

I can say without fear of doubt that this is one of the best RPG's i've played in years! Alot of people have tried to make a sci-fi rpg, and Level 5 does it right with this game. You play as Jaster Rogue, a young man growing up on a desert planet, with dreams of seeing the universe, and getting off your dustbowl home. Eventually beasts attack your town, and you get mistaken for Desert Claw, the galaxy's most infamous Bounty hunter, and are recruited into a pirate gang. That's when the story begins.

I loved the game. tons of great characters (including Jaster), and a great simple battle system (basically the same as KHII). Item creation is done in two different ways that I won't spoil for everyone, but you'll find yourself enjoying them.

But what were you guys thoughts on this game?

I actually started a thread about this game back before Christmas, asking if people had heard much about it.  Now that it's released, I'm glad to hear good things.

I still haven't picked it up, but I'll probably grab it sometime.  Still need to beat FFXII, Oblivion, and hit 70 in WoW, though... :)

"Rogue Galaxy, the latest role-playing opus from Dragon Quest VIII and Dark Cloud 2 developer Level-5, doesn't quite have the charm of Final Fantasy, the intrigue of Suikoden, or the epic scale of Xenosaga. But it does have three very important points going for it: The men have facial hair, the women are the ones with the bare midriffs, and the robots are decidedly nonsexy."

this is all I need to know

Well, as far as story goes, it's a little more simplistic than those three, but it's just way more fun to play than those three.  The Factory minigame is quite possibly the most difficult one to figure out that I've ever played.  I've made it all the way to Vedan, so far.

The art style is awesome (cutscenes are fuckin' awesome), but at the same time, having it cel-shaded detracts from the story just a little bit.  There are some story bits that I can see what the devs wanted us to feel (happy, sad, betrayed), but the way some of the characters who say those lines look creates this odd juxtaposition that glares at me everytime I see it.

For all who care to know, one of my top three RPG's (haven't finished it yet, but that's where it stands right now), and definitely in one of the top 20 games I've ever played.

I'm on Vedan as well, and I agree that the Factory minigame is kind of a pain to figure out. Pimping out your weapons was the best part of Dark Cloud 2, so I'm glad to see that's still intact. I'm kind of upset that I keep exceeding my level limit, though. I have to level up Jaster some more before I can make him a new sword.

I really like the art style too. All the shading and stuff gives it a great level of detail.

Also, there's an ax-wielding dogman. That is sort of worth it on its own. Plus, it's only 40 dollars right after coming out!

Yeah the factory is hard. Most people have a problemw ith setting up the equipment. The official strategy guide is supposed to have a good layout for the factory in it and i'm getting mine today, so we'll see.

I'm enjoying Rogue Galaxy.

The plot is stupid, but it's stupid in that charming inoffensive way Dragon Quest plots are stupid, so I enjoy it nonetheless.  (It doesn't take itself seriously the way the Kitase/Nomura Final Fantasy plots do.)

The battles are fun, but I wish they'd make it more like Ys.  I don't like it that you sort of automatically turn toward the nearest enemy when you attack.  I'd rather it be more like old school games and just attack in the direction you're facing when you attack.

This also seems like the sort of game that might be more fun in a solo game than with three characters, because they tend to do a lot of the work for you.
