Any Primus fans?
« on: 11 Feb 2007, 02:06 »

So recently (Thanks to Guitar Hero), I've been getting into Primus more and more, but I don't know much about them, and downloads of them seem to be scarce, so I ask you which is the album to buy to truly test their waters?

I guess I would say Sailing the Seas of Cheese. I don't really like it that much. The only Primus album I like as a whole CD is Anti-Pop, but most ravenous Primus fans I know consider StSoC to be their definative work.

If you want Primus downloads, they offer loads of bootlegs on their page.
http://www.primusville.com/boot/boot_main.html

But as far as albums go, look out for Frizzle Fry if you can get your hands on it. And Tales from the Punchbowl, thats my favourite album.

You might also be interested in some of claypools other projects, most of which are more jam oriented. You can find those on http://www.lesclaypool.com (I'd recommend you check out the Frog Brigade)

Probably the easiest way to get into Primus, is to buy their latest release, which is a greatest hits. http://stores.musictoday.com/store/dept.asp?band_id=362&dept_id=833&sfid=2

Primus were big for me, so I'm always happy to help with getting other people into them.

Claypool is a pretty eccentric guy at times, so I think it's always great to get the dvd's to see what goes on at one of his gigs.

Animals Shouldn't Try to Act Like People is a collection of primus videos and short film type things.
Hallucinogenetics Tour, a live show from Primus' final tour.
And, 5 Gallons of Diesel is a collection of live videos and some other bits that Claypool has been involved in, its got, Sausage, Oysterhead, Frog Brigade, and others I cant remember the names of.

But if you insist on downloading, I think these are the Primus tracks you should look for:
Jerry Was a Racecar Driver
Tommy the Cat
Southbound Pachyderm
Lacquer Head
John the Fisherman
My Name is Mud.

I used to be fairly big on them but nowadays i don't ever listen to them. Like, ever.

I would recommend Frizzle Fry.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I only have Sailing The Seas of Cheese, which is great, though I'm told their other albums are better if you're a ravenous fan.

The Hallucinogenetics DVD is from their final tour?? I know it's a reunion show from '04, but they also said it was their final tour??

They've done a couple of shows since then but it was their last full blown tour.

My personal recommendations would definitely be for Pork Soda, along with StSoC, Frizzle Fry, and the Brown Album.  Lots of people thought the Brown Album was weak, but personally I loved it.

In terms of side projects, the stuff to look for from best to worst would be:
Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains
Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel
The Les Claypool Frog Brigade
Oysterhead
Sausage

I might elaborate more on this when I have some time.  Primus is pretty much one of my favorite bands.
