Favorite song lyric
« on: 15 Feb 2007, 22:45 »

After listening to my Ipod for about an hour or so on shuffle, I came across Frank Zappa's "Why Does it Hurt When I Pee?", and it got to the point in the song when Frank bellows out, "My balls feel like a pair of moroccas!", and it was at that point that I realized that this incredibally candid line was my all time favorite line in a song. So, I was interested to know what all of you guys' favorite line in a song is.

I'm an Asshole. ~Dennis Leary

Know what I'm gonna do? I'm gonna get myself a 1967 Cadillac El Dorado
Convertible, hot pink, with whaleskin hubcaps and all-leather cow
interior and big brown baby seal eyes for headlights... yeah! And I'm
gonna drive around in that baby at 115 miles per hour, getting 1 mile
per gallon, suckin' down quarter pound cheeseburgers from McDonald's
in the old-fashioned non-biodegradable styrofoam containers and when
I'm done suckin' down those greaseball burgers I'm gonna wipe my mouth
on the American Flag and then I'm gonna toss the styrofoam containers
right out the side, and there ain't a goddamn thing anybody can
do about it. You know why? Because we got the bombs, that's why Two
words: Nuclear fuckin' weapons, OK? Russia, Germany, Romania, they
can have all the democracy they want...they can have a big democracy
cakewalk right through the middle of Tienamen Square and it won't make
a lick of difference, because we got the bombs, OK? John Wayne's not
dead, he's frozen! And as soon as we find a cure for cancer, we're
gonna thaw out the Duke and he's gonna be pretty pissed off. You know
why? Have you ever taken a cold shower? Well, multiply that by 15
million times, that's how pissed off the Duke's gonna be.
I'm gonna get the Duke and John Casavetti and Lee Marvin

and Sam Peckinpaw

and a case of whisky

and drive to Texas...(HEY, HEY HEY!>

Tism - (There's gonna be) Sex tonite

There at the protest about Womens rights,
She slagged Helen Garner, he said "You're right"
He shook his dreadlocks and condemned Wayne Carey
She offered him tofu; both were quite hairy -

There's gonna be sex tonight

Interval at the theatre - they both hit it off
Discussing the meaning of Anton Chekhov;
The director they hated, the actress? - they panned her;
What they acted out later weren't exactly Uncle Vania

On the deck of the boat she pointed out east
Said "A whale is in fact an air breathing beast"
He really liked nature; he was out of the slammer
He had a gram of cocaine and a video camera

He was knocking on doors; she was watchin' television
He said "Money for the kids? I'm collecting for World Vision"
Her heart was full of pity for a world full of grief
He donated to a charity she called Hand Relief

---

Also, I really like the lyrics in the chorus of Channels - Chivaree for some reason. I can't get them out of my head.

"Drum on the clocks, and strum on the wires, unlock the box that cages desire"

On a slightly more serious notes some lyrics I like:

From Darkthrone's "Natassja in Eternal Sleep"

You live in me, like you moved in with my soul.

One of the only Black Metal love songs to have ever been written. I think that line I quoted in particular is a really good summary of what it means to be in love with someone.

And just becomes I'm a Tolkein geek and i really love the imagery these lyrics conjure up I'll also put down Summoning's  " Khazad-d?m":

From ashes and fire be broken
A light from the shadows shall spring
Renewed shall be blade that was broken
The crownless shall again be king

The world is grey, the mountains old
The forge's fire is ashen and cold
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls

The shadow lies upon his tomb
But still the sunken stars appeal
In the dark and windless Mirrormere
There lies his crown in water deep

'Til Durin wakes again from sleep
A deadly sword, a healing hand
A trumpet - voice, a burning hand
A lord of Wisdom...

Fire and shadow - both defied
In  Khazad-d?m his wisdom died
In joy thou hast lived

If thou hearest the cry
of the Gull on the shore
Thy soul shall then rest
in the forest no more...

Godsmack - Voodoo

"I'm not the one who's so far away,
When I feel the snakebite enter my veins.
Never did I wanna be here again,
And I don't remember why I came."

It's just a great song with a badass beat. If you've ever seen these guys in concert, they are teh bomb!

I would paste the whole album here if I could, but Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd...

Brain Damage:
The lunatic is on the grass
The lunatic is on the grass
Remembering games and daisy chains and laughs
Got to keep the loonies on the path

The lunatic is in the hall
The lunatics are in the hall
The paper holds their folded faces to the floor
And every day the paper boy brings more

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

The lunatic is in my head
The lunatic is in my head
You raise the blade, you make the change
You rearrange me ' till I'm sane
You lock the door
And throw away the key
There's someone in my head but it's not me

And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

I sometimes wish that this album wouldn't end, it's so great. I have this on and The Wall on vinyl...tis fab.

I've always liked Place Position by Fugazi

all origins are accidental
you've got no papers and no
roads lead home anymore
chance is the root of all
place position all maps are
random all scales are wrong
legal - illegal -
no passion for the difference
legal - illegal -
false premise forge the nation

may all your borders be porous
free transmission
smear genetics c est la vie

yawn yawn yawn
I can't stifle my boredom
so why not act your age
fear of contagion

the violence of a

makes the phrasing of
"all the pleasures of home"
legal illegal -

The mirror's telling half-truths
These stolen words finally feel like mine
Swollen and sweating (sweating), offtime (offtime)
I can see it in your eyes

An ocean floods my heart
I'm sorry that I let you down

You know just how I feel tonight
This is everything I wanted, you've been searching for yourself
In other peoples' eyes

It's normally tricky for me to pin down something like this to my favourite lyric, but I think I can absolutely say that it's something by Nick Cave.

In fact, I think I can absolutely say it's this post-breakup smackdown by Nick Cave from the song 'Far From Me':

'It's good to hear you're doing so well
But can't you find somebody else who you can ring and tell?'

Off the top of my head (see if you can recognize it, fuckers):

In the shuffling madess
Of the locomotive breath,
Runs the all-time loser,
Headlong to his death.
He feels the piston scraping --
Steam breaking on his brow --
Old charlie stole the handle and
The train wont stop going --
No way to slow down.
He sees his children jumping off
At the stations -- one by one.
His woman and his best friend --
In bed and having fun.
Hes crawling down the corridor
On his hands and knees --
Old charlie stole the handle and
The train wont stop going --
No way to slow down.
He hears the silence howling --
Catches angels as they fall.
And the all-time winner
Has got him by the balls.
He picks up gideons Bible --
Open at page one --
Old charlie stole the handle and
The train wont stop going --
No way to slow down.

I'll post some more just because I like the song too damn much, I wasn't gonig t opost it because of it's anti-religous overtones but fuck it...

Samael - The Cross

The wind of spring blows in heaven
in the land of gold in the land of god
manipulate the holiness
maculate our loneliness
shining between two worlds
learning to win and hold
fraction of monopoly
tension of opposite's pole
give or take what has to move
for I will fight for my country

Eldest to the one and I
harvest of love and light
armless - amnesty

North south east and west the cross is sent over the lands
keep draining what was and will be in our time in our life
pilot soul takes you on a ride, no rise no fall for Humankind

Among the best survive or leave
paranoid night so hard to relieve
would you betray innovation
in the name of tradition
hopeless - amnesia

North south east and west the cross is sent over the lands
keep draining what was and will be in our time in our life
pilot soul takes you on the ride, no rise no fall for Humankind

Helvetia gloria still smile behind the shade of shame
cross your faith, join your hands tomorrow holds another day
Eldest to the one and I
harvest of love and light
dictated by war and hate
supported by those who hide
it lives in your mind
whatever you may say
whoever you may pray

These are the lyrics to the song "Decrepitude" off the Burzum album Filosofem, it's the last track on the album to have any lyrics. They pretty much sum up the entire emotion and mood of the album. It also gives you a small insight into the fractured and disturbed mind of the guy who penned them.

Tears from the eyes so cold, tears from the eyes, in the grass so green.
As I lie here, the burden is being lifted once and for all, once and for all.
Beware of the light, it may take you away, to where no evil dwells.
It will take you away, for all eternity.

I really have no idea. Probably something by Skyclad or Sol Invictus. Actually, this is probably one of the best couplets anyone ever wrote, from 'Penny Dreadful', by Skyclad, which is just a song about how much Martin Walkyier hates Kerrang!:

"DJ's, VJ's, Pimps and trollops,
Never mind music: THIS IS BOLLOCKS!"

The way he shouts it in his accent: brilliant.

Or perhaps 'Laws and Crowns by Sol Invictus:

"The role of creator, and destroyer
The laws of life, Need no lawyers
In the cruel world of blood and struggle
Coming second means winning rubble

A laurel wreath upon his brow,
Bloody garlands for his crown.
A laurel wreath upon his brow,
Bloody garlands for his crown.

The past is cruel, and the prest false
Man and nature, become divorced
Hands are torn, from the clock-face
The future like a wolfpack waits

A laurel wreath upon his brow,
Bloody garlands for his crown.
A laurel wreath upon his brow,
Bloody garlands for his crown.

Pretty fuckin' hard to narrow down, but my current two favourites would probably be:

Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Counting Down The Hours
Quote
Innocence, it don't come easy - in a sense it never will
Accidents mean no one's guilty, ignorance means someone's killed
So I asked our Mr. Mellor how one gets to where one's going
And he points to his survival, and he points me down the road
And I go on
Wondering if I've got a soul and
Counting down the hours 'til it goes
On a dark wet night in April, on a street in Jersey where
I went looking for some writing that I knew would not be there
And a punter from the Pelhams and the police, in the rain,
Were concerned more with a car than with the fact the light had changed
But after listening all morning, as I drove down 95
To a story of detainees who were barely kept alive
I could deal with trying to process pigeons acting like they're doves
But not with interference from the power lines above
And I go on
Wondering if I've got a soul and
Counting down the hours 'til it goes
And oh, precautions, yes precautions
But if you're playing with a gun, you could kill someone
And in the dark it's hard to know a friend
But I'm not angry, I won't be forever angry
As I'm walking toward tomorrow with a rifle in my hand
And I'm thinking about New England, and I'm missing old Japan
And a mountain in California where a spring runs hot and cold
And if I told you I felt ageless, would you tell me I'm not old?
And I go on
Wondering if I've got a soul and
Counting down the hours 'till it goes

or

Decemberists, Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect
Quote
and here i dreamt i was a soldier
and i marched the streets of Birkenau
and i recall in spring
the perfume that the air would bring
to the indolent town
where the barkers call the moon down
the carnival was ringing loudly now
and just to lay with you
there's nothing that i wouldn't do
save lay my rifle down

and try one, and try two
guess it always comes down to
alright, it's okay, guess it's better to turn this way

and i am nothing of a builder
but here i dreamt i was an architect
and i built this balustrade
to keep you home, to keep you safe
from the outside world
but the angles and the corners
even though my work is unparalelled
they never seemed to meet
this structure fell about our feet
and we were free to go

and try one, and try two
guess it always comes down to
alright, okay, guess it's better to turn this way

and here in spain i am a spaniard
i will be buried with my marionettes
countess and courtesan
will fall 'neath my tender hand
when their husbands were not around
but you, my soiled teenage girlfriend
or are you furrowed like a lioness
and we are vagabonds
we travel without seatbelts on
we live this close to death

and try one, and try two
guess it always comes down to
alright, okay, guess it's better to turn this
but i won, so you lose
guess it always comes down toalright, it's okay, guess it's better to turn this way

If I had to pick something smaller than an entire song, it'd be the middle verse of Architect

Pretty much every Skyclad song has great lyrics, but at the moment R'vannith is one of my favourites:

R'Vannith, R'Vannith, R'Vannith I cried
As I grieved for the fallen - and wished I had died
I heard ravens laugh - stripping the flesh from her bones
Well fed by the Senate and People of Rome.

Two thousand years pass by - yet still they hold sway here
Their Empire is holy (its motives the same)
They have traded their spears for the cross that man fears
Those who nailed Him up high now rule in his name.

Invaders come to violate
To subjugate and legislate
Believing their forefather's crimes
Give them the right to twist our minds

R'Vannith, R'Vannith, R'Vannith we'll cry
When the last of our freedom is crushed by a lie
New legions of pious hypocrisy ride
To baptise us in blood (an unstoppable tide)

people say she's crazy, she got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
weeell that's one way to lose these walking blues
diamonds on the soles of her shoes

She was physically forgotten
then she slipped into my pocket with my car keys
she said you're takin' me for granted because I please you.
Wearing these dia-a-amonds.

and I could say oo-oo-oo
as if everybody knows what I'm talking about
as if everybody here would know exactly what I was talking about
talking about diamonds on the soles of her shoes

She makes the sign of a teaspoon;
He makes the sign of a wave.
The poor boy changes clothes and puts on aftershave:
To compensate for his ordinary shoes.
And she said "Honey take me dancin" but they ended up by sleepin
In a doorway
By the bodegas and the lights on Upper Broadway.
Wearing diamonds on the soles of their shoes...

and I could say oo-oo-oo
and everybody here would know what I'm talking about
I mean everybody here would know (exactly) what I was talking about
talking about di-i-i-a-ai-amonds.

people say I'm crazy, I got diamonds on the soles of my shoes
weeell that's one way to lose these walking blues
diamonds on the soles of your shoes...

Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes - Paul Simon.
I love this: it's one of few songs that I can remember all the lyrics to without fail. Also it has spooning in it.

From Curl Up And Die's "But The Past Ain't Through With Us" EP:

Quote
Deal with what you have, and what you'll have left, because there is no such thing as a fresh start.

Later in the same song:

Quote
I am no good at being around.  I am no good at being alive.  But I am trying.

here's one of many i could list:

Quote
A is for angry, which is what you are at me
A is for adult, which is what I'll never be
A is for applesauce, my favorite meal
A is for Adam, which is how I sometimes feel;
Like I'm the only man on Earth, and I've forgotten what that's worth
A is for Arthur, he's a lovable drunk
A M & Azing, like Thelonius Monk
A is for argument, A is for apparent
A is for antagonism that's not even there and
it's just you begging for attention or something I won't even mention

And I don't even know why you keep on trying
Like I don't even know why I keep on lying
There are millions of people in worlds of their own
And two of them can't let go

A is for algebra, I learned it in school
A is what Fonzie said, 'cause he was very cool
A is for adversary, A is for affection
A is arousal, you are giving me an erection
C'mon I'm trying to show affection for longer than a half an hour

I met a woman I used to know
Long before you, long ago
All I could say, after hello
Was "are you still single?";
A is for attitude I can't help but wield
A is for arrogance; emotional shield
A is for acting, A is for abhorrently
A is for asshole, which is what I am, how rude of me.
I owe you an apology I'm sorry

"Rock For Sustainable Capitalism"
Propagandhi

I fuckin' love that one rock video where
that fucking jack-ass mohawked millionaire
prances around by far the worst sausage party on earth,
where by mere chance he's caught on film shaking hands
with an incredibly diverse collection of patriotic skins.
I like the message it sends:
With a Rebel yell, Just Do Exactly What You're Told.
One million douche bags can't be wrong?
"When did punk rock become so safe?"
You'll excuse me if I laugh in your face
as I itemize your receipts
and PowerPoint your balance sheets.

I hear this year's Vans Warped Tour is "going green!"
I guess they heard that money grows on trees.
Hope they ship all those shitty bands overseas
like they did the factories.

Music's power to describe, compel, renew...
It's all a distant second to the offers you can't refuse.
Anyone remember when we used to believe
that music was a sacred place and not some fucking bank machine?

Not something you just bought and sold?
How could we have been so naive?
Well, I think when all is said and done,
just cause we were young doesn't mean we were wrong.

And I'll rock back and forth
on this two-bit hobbyhorse
'til she splinters and gives way.
I'll tend the flowers by her grave.
And whisper her name.

If anyone out there understands
can I please see a show of hands
just so I know I'm not insane?
Ever get the feeling you've been played?

Well, that's rock for sustainable capitalism and you know,
we may face a scorched and lifeless earth,
but they're accountable to their shareholders first.
That's how the world works.

(If Daniel's looking at this, he's going, "Yep, this kid is just what I think he is.")

Back & Forth - The Dismemberment Plan

Quote
There?s a kind of music that reminds me of you
It?s all clear expensive drinks and shiny shirts
And the click of heels as they descend from the taxi
Like the first foot on the moon, oh, and it glows with ache
And if it hits me right it?s almost too much to take
And it?s got right angle razor thin lines
That turn and swerve like perfect sines
As we dress to the nines in an
Attempt to leave it all behind
In a search of the moment between the seconds where
Everything is just fine
That silver thread imbedded deep within our spines
And I used to be kind of weird about this
A fear of dependence on a guilty gilt-edged
Hedged transcendence that makes us lairs
And tense when we look down and realize
That nothing really suspends us
But it was never just another Saturday night
Not with you in attendance
So throw your hands in the air
And wave them like you just don?t care
It?s on a whim; it?s on a dare
To shrug away what we can?t bear
And we?re going back and forth
And back and forth and back and forth and back
We?re going back and forth
And back and forth and back and forth and back
And it?s a deep blue see-through membrane that protects us
It connects us, a pulsing cellophane
Party-train skein that helps us and
Envelopes and keeps us locked inside
Forever and ever along for the ride
And we?re moving through a phosphorescent gel
A semi-solid self-lit ocean and it?s a funny notion, isn?t it?
Yeah, but I?m kinda digging it
And it?s rigged and isn?t nearly so big
And it speaks only of its own
Perpetual near miss
Like the uncertain memory
Of a stranger?s mistaken kiss
And faces slide by in glowing shadows
Like snowbound ghosts that go up and down
In epileptic shivers and negative radioactive slivers
In a landscape of endless dull glitter
And a taste in my mouth so sweet, yet so bitter
And we exhaust ourselves trying to get there
Somebody scream?all right
We?ll try to fill the echoless night
So fasten up and hold tight
We can?t give up without a fight
And we?re going back and forth
And back and forth and back and forth and back
We?re going back and forth
And back and forth and back and forth and back
So in the end, whatever, we die, we dissolve
Equations unbalanced, riddles unsolved
And we were never connected or involved
Except for the intersections and crazy mathematics
With no time and no space and no schedule and no place
And we pass right through it without a trace
And sometimes that music drifts through my car
On a spring night when anything is possible
And I close my eyes and I not my head
And I wonder how you been and I count to a hundred and ten
Because you?ll always be my hero, even if I never see you again

Okay people the question was "What is your favorite song LINE" not -song-. Gosh.

Anyway, I think the one I like the most, off the top of my head would be one of two from My Chemical Romance...
1. "Mama, we're all gonna die."
2. "The doctors and the nurses they adore me so
But it's really quite alarming cause I'm such an awful fuck (why thank you!)"

That second one is two lines, I'm banning you.

"How can the dissatisfaction of some left or right wing faction hope to justify the bombs that burts, the innocents that burn?"

Hmm...true, but the second line is a continuing thought ;)

And at least it's better then posting the whole damn song. Because, in all actuality, the song kinda creeps me out.

Are songs not normally one continuing thought, or at least a continuing concept that could be considered a thought?

Right now there is a contest going on in my mind between two:

"clllLLAP YOUR HANDS! (But I feel so lonely)
Clap your hands! (But it won't do nothing)
[etc etc]"

and

"Oh, the shark has pretty teeth, dear,
And he shows them pearly white.
Just a jacknife has Macheath, dear,
But he keeps it out of sight..."

They both get stuck in my head for hours at a time. Woo.

As far as The Hold Steady go, I'm partial to this verse of "Your Little Hoodrat Friend":

Your little hoodrat friend's been calling me again
And I can't stand all the things that she sticks into her skin
Like sharpened ballpoint pens and steel guitar strings
She says it hurts, but it's worth it
Tiny little text etched into her neck it said
"Jesus lived and died for all your sins"
She's got blue black ink and it's scratched into her lower back
It said "damn right I'll rise again"
Yeah, damn right you'll rise again
