Let's Talk About Old Mercury Rev

I love new (post-Deserter's Songs) Mercury Rev, but the first three albums - Yerself Is Steam, Boces and See You On the Other Side - are just so mindfuckingly good that I absolutely can not believe they are STILL out of print.  I would even go so far as to say that when Donahue left the Flaming Lips, he actually managed to make three albums that worked the same sound the Lips went for in their early-90s trilogy (Hit to Death, Satellite, Clouds) but did it BETTER.  If you like the Flaming Lips or sonically dense quirky ecstatic psychedelic pop music in general you MUST get some old Mercury Rev.  You'll thank me later.

Yeah, Secret Migration is kind of an okay record.  I've been listening to See You On the Other Side all day, and it is just so immaculate.  The little touches like the goofy gospel choir, the guy yelling "there's plenty of tape left, man!", the saxophone... if I had to pin it down I'd say it's their finest moment, a perfect balance between the early chaos and the later pop craftmanship.

I just got See You On The Other Side on the strength of the above post and this is unexpectedly awesome. I absolutely loved Secret Migration but hadn't heard any other stuff; time to give this band the attention they deserve I think.

I have Deserter's Songs because I saw it on a poster in the QC comic once. Also, it was like 8 bucks used at my local record store. I love this album, though I had no idea their earlier stuff was out of print, which explains why I can't find them anywhere.
