The top 100 list thread reminded me of another one.

Ninja Gaiden III.

I once got to 7-3 and my game froze.  That was the night of my murder spree.

Pac-Man. Just old fashioned Pac-Man. Goddamn it and it's...repetitive techno music and pro-estacy usage-ness. Goddamn it to hell. Also I have never beaten Dark Cloud OR GTAVC. I never get past the riot part.

I finished Pokemon in the red/blue days and by that I mean caught em all and I was reasonably proud until they released yellow, gold, and silver...

Man, kids these days!  I beat BattleToads plenty of times when it came out.  I just went back and tried the jet bike level using a KEYBOARD and I still found it to be extremely easy.

I never beat the original Rygar.  I spent like four hours finally getting to the last boss one time and died.  Man, I was pissed.

You kids and your damn "save points"!

Dragon Crystal.

Back when I was 7, it was the most awesome game I'd ever played.

Now, it's still damn awesome.

A few years back i was really stoked at getting to level 27 of 30.

I realize you're being slightly facetious, but saying save points are for pussies in today's games is ludicrous. I can see in games of the NES and SNES era, games that CAN BE BEATEN in a handful of hours. But games today tend to be longer and more complex and you NEED save points. Plus it's not like you're forced to use them.

I remember when Alien Vs. Predator came out for PC. It had limited saves per level based on what difficulty you played. This was sadistically hard for people like me who suck at twitch games. When they patched the game and let you save as much as you wanted, there was a great gnashing of teeth from those irritating 'true hardcore gamers' who said it would make the game needlessly easy. Well, it all becomes moot when you aren't forced to use the saves!! If I recall correctly, the game didn't auto-save to boot.

While I'm sure there are people who have beaten some of the more ridiculously huge PC RPGs like The Magic Candle, Challenge of the Five Realms and (to a lesser extent) Ultima VI, I have never actually known anyone who did, and can't imagine the dedication it must take.

People who think Baldur's Gate is a "huge" or "challenging" RPG ought to check those out and imagine the Hell one went through being an RPG fan pre-1991.

Those games were like Baldur's Gate + Expansion + Bladur's Gate II + Expansion + Icewind Dale rolled into one.

I think the first PC RPG I beat without any help from a strategy guide (you damn kids and your "GameFAQs!  In my day you had to PAY for Strategy Guides!") was Wizardry: Bane of the Cosmic Forge, and I got such a great feeling from solving all those puzzles, mapping all those mazes, and actually levelling my characters in an effective way without any outside help.

Actually some pre-'91 RPGs weren't overly long or difficult - Wasteland, obviously, is still extremely playable and enjoyable today.

But then you had stuff like Starflight.  Oh God, the hours I wasted playing Starflight and doing absolutely nothing.  Starflight was like an MMORPG only you're the only player in the entire gameworld and you had to look ridiculously hard to figure out that there was actually a way to "win".  It was hard to even figure out there was supposed to be any kind of goal to it!

How many people have played the game Croc for the PS One?  I don't think that's it's full title, but it was a platformer, and it was freaking hard.  I was permanently stuck on one level, and then forgot about it.  I still think about it from time to time.

I don't know if you guys would consider Harvest Moon games some of the best out there(I know I do), but seriously... how do you beat them?! I've played all of them, and the only one I've gotten close to beating was Another Wonderful Life, and I still have like... 5 game years left.

But yeah, onto less of HM, I never managed to beat any of the Geneforge games. I tried, and I got SO close to beating GF: 2, but I never did. I got stuck on some random room where giant spikes from the ground would attack me with blasts of angry light when I'd walk in. It made me sad.

The question is not "Do Harvest Moon games have an ending?" it's "How the fuck did they make this enjoyable?"  It's like making an enjoyable game out of filing paperwork.

You know... a game for filing paperwork wouldn't be all that bad. Just add ninjas, some beheading, a plot, and a plan to destroy the filing cabinet. Oh, and don't forget the love interest; that sexy water cooler from across the cubicle isle.
