It seems to me that the Spice Girls were one of the most important and best pop acts of recent times. I've seldom heard an indie or metal song that is as enjoyable as some of the singles they produced.

Well, if you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends. This means not breaking the shins of the males I talk to. Rules or no rules.

Last year I lived with some people who liked to listen to the Spice Girls.

They do not live with me anymore.

Rules are meant to be broken, unlike this bloke's legs.

This is providing he goes out with you of course. If not then the rules must be obeyed.

I think he's right. Emilio knows more about bands that I love than I ever will. But then he listens to something like Abba or the spice girls. What if they really are good and we're just afraid to admit it?
Emilio is a walking paradox, he's making us question everything we think we know about everything that is good and holy about music, he must be eliminated.
Sorry about this Kat, he's got to go.

There's stuff from the first two albums which is some of the finest pop music of recent times. Melanie C could really sing, and her Northern Star solo album is pretty impressive too.

I love Melanie C's solo stuff, of which I may own a few albums.

I think we're overlooking an important question though.

ABBA or the Spice Girls?

ABBA, hands down. However,

Here's the story from A to Z
Wanna get with me you gotta listen carefully
We got Em in the place who likes it in your face
We've got G like MC who likes it on an easy V
Doesn't come for free (She's a real lady, after all)

You listen to ABBA when you want to have enjoyable music and funtimes. You listen to the Spice Girls when you want to dance around your room in your underwear, singing into a hairbrush. No? That's just me? Oh well.

The Spice Girls set back feminism in the UK by about 15 years by telling a whole generation of young women that the way to achieve equality with men was to hang around in huge groups, wear sports gear and become lager louts.

They also fucking sucked. They were completely manufactured, auto-tuned all to shit, and most of them weren't even particularly physically attractive.

Verdict: MEGASUCK.

From now on, everyone in their post has to say who their favorite Spice Girl was.

Emma/Baby Spice. Your turn!

ABBA or the Spice Girls?

Hmm... objectively, ABBA is much better music, subjectively, they annoy me a lot more.  If forced to listen to one or the other, I think I'd have a much easier time tuning out the Spice Girls.

I have a vague recollection of seeing that Spice Girls movie some number of years back, not really sure what it was about at this point (I think there was a bus?).  I have no idea what was the sequence of events that led me to seeing it, though.

The Spice Girls are bad, but not nearly as bad as most people say they are.

If I'm forced to listen to pop music, I wouldn't complain that much about the Spice Girls.  At least not nearly as much as...Backstreet Boys, N Sync, that Mambo #5 guy, most ganster rap, etc.

To clarify, i enjoy some of the spice girls singles, however, when compared to abba, they are complete garbage.
This is not their fault, as the same would happen with all but about 4 bands you can name

ABBA ftw. There also has yet to be a musical based off of Spice Girls songs.

And Ginger was totally better than Baby.

I would take any or all of the latter at once over the spice girls. Probably because of the total media saturation they had over here in the UK; they're annoying enough for five seconds, never mind several years.

ABBA or the Spice Girls?

While on the subject, John Lennon or Liam Gallagher?

No, Ace of Base is to ABBA as Liam Gallagher is to John Lennon.

Sporty Spice ftw.

Guys, what is with the sporty spice? Baby or Ginger was totally where it was at. I always wanted to be Baby when we played Spice Girls, but my friends made me be Ginger. Apparently, I was the whoriest of the bunch.

Spice World was totally robbed when it didn't get nominated for any Oscars or Golden Globes.
