POKEMANS
« on: 19 Mar 2007, 16:36 »

Release date is, as far as I know, April 22nd (Storm Rider said this, and he is probably right). I plan on getting Diamond! Diamonds are shiny. If you are not planning to pick up the new Pokemon, I demand an explanation that does not use the term "suck".

I think I am going to get Diamond as well. It launches on April 22nd for North Americans, but the European date is sometime later in the year.

Since this one is Wi-Fi enabled, we'll be able to battle/trade with each other! Somebody should get Pearl so that they get all the Pokemon us Diamond guys won't.

WiFi is such a natural step for the Pokemon series. I would only be more hyped if the starter Fire Pokemon didn't look so damn ugly. I have been a devout Fire dude since day one, and this latest iteration makes me want to cry.

I'm totally getting Pearl. It's been a long time since I delved into Pokemon and I'm looking forward to putting way too much fucking thought into team building strategy again.

I got tired of Pokemon years ago for the same reason that I got tired of Magic the Gathering. I understand the appeal, and I loved team/deck building for awhile, but nobody I know gives a damn about either anymore. And I've never been a big fan of monster or card battling games. I'd much rather play something more straightforward like a Final Fantasy, or a complete creative dream like Shadow of the Colossus or Paper Mario.

I really love Gold and Silver. It was better when you could still remember all of them. I tried playing Sapphire or whatever it was last year, but got bored after about 20 or 30 hours of playtime. My Yellow cart on the other hand has about 200 hours on it.

I don't get what's wrong with having more Pokemon. More Pokemon means more diversity means more different styles of play means more strategy. That's all good as far as I'm concerned. I haven't actually owned a Pokemon game since Red, but I played somebody else's copy of Silver a few years later. Still, it's been a long time and I'm looking forward to get into it all over again.

The thing with the new games is, it's not more Pokemon, it's new Pokemon entirely. When I played Sapphire, I saw maybe 5 that weren't new for Ruby/Sapphire. Unless you're really REALLY determined, you're not going to see that many old ones.

It has Wi-Fi, support, meaning that you can trade/battle with anyone anywhere provided they give you their friend code. Meaning, I could trade with you despite being on different continents.

It's also not an entirely new set, but I'm not sure if all of the Pokemon from the previous games in the series (meaning 500+) will be in the new games or if they'll just cherry-pick a certain number from Red/Blue, Gold/Silver, etc., and then add the new ones in to that set.

Also, they brought back the time system from Gold/Silver, meaning you'll find different types of Pokemon at different times of day. However, the time of day is also supposed to affect certain moves, meaning certain attacks will be more or less powerful at night, apparently.

That's all I know, except that the graphics are apparently greatly improved over the GBA games. Since I haven't played Pokemon since the Game Boy Color days, I'm sure it will look great from my perspective.

I love Pokemon. Sadly, I never got to play the original, because by the time they came out I had "moved on" from my gameboy days, and thus, had no way to play it. Eventually I got a GBA, and the first Pokemon game I played was Ruby, and that particular era remains my favorite, even after playing Fire red and Leaf green. I'm really looking forward to these games, and already have a pre-order for both of them. Why am I getting two? Because, like many other people, especially those who violently claim they aren't, I'm a consumer whore. But, seriously, I love these games, no matter what those people who play "adult" games say.

from what I have seen the bottom screen will be the clock and map and such, as well as some odd spinner thing that I have only really seen in the commercials

another interesting thing is the random trade option, sort of like an auction you can put up a pokemon that you want to get rid of and which one you want, then when someone finds your choice and accepts them you can instantly trade with them, no friend codes are needed.

I beat Red, Blue, Yellow, Silver, and Gold back in the day, getting pretty much all the Pokemon in them all, but I haven't played any of the games since then.  Mayhaps I'll get back into it with this one, but we shall see.  My funds are kind of low at the moment, but I have such fond memories of the games that I may be forced into it.

I'll pass this time. Even though pokemons are cute and quite addictive games, I just don't care about those new pokemons. Now there are too many pokemons, that aren't even well designed. The gameplay doesn't evolve and it just... it just.. I don't know, but I am not going to buy new pokemons. Maybe if I get a huge amount of moolah, now I don't really have money for games that are not must-have.

Already have Pokemon Fire Red on GBA, that's enough for me. :)

so just different pokemon in each one? i never hookend mine up with any other ones. if gameplay is the same in each one i'll just get what they have at the store, i suppose. i am not all pokemon master-like the way some of you guys are, i thought maybe the difference would be something like the difference between legend of zelda oracle of ages/oracle of seasons.

The water one looks cute.

Okay after looking at wikipedia, things I'm excited about:
- I can play as a girl. YAY. She's so cute, too.
- Munchlax, hahahah.
- Being terribly confused by all of the Pokemon that I won't recognize.
- Er, I don't know. Just wasting a lot of time.

I didn't preorder so I'll probably get mine next weekend.

I'm usually a Fire-type starter, but I haven't seen any of the new starters.

EDIT: I've looked up the three starters, and I'm now trying to decide between the Water and Fire types. Grass/Ground has way too many weaknesses. I have to decide between the weaknesses of Fire/Fighting and Water/Steel and which are more of a liability.

Fire/Fighting: 7 Strengths, 4 Weaknesses (Rock is super-effective against Fire but weak against Fighting, so it cancels out to an extent)

Water/Steel: 5 Strengths, 4 Weaknesses (Fire cancels out)

Grass/Ground: 7 Strengths, 5 Weaknesses including a double weakness to Ice (Water cancels out)

So yeah, the grass guy is out. Out of the other two, there's not a HUGE difference. It's what type of Gyms are near the start of the game that really depends on how hard (or easy) early gameplay will be. Near the end you'll have more of a variety of Pokemon to choose from.

If I get one of the games (and a DS, for that matter), I'll probably choose the fire guy (no matter how ugly it is).

Turn-based RPGs just put me to sleep nowadays.  I can't even go back and play old beloved Final Fantasy titles.

I was a pokemon MASTER back in the day.  Through the use of the x3 speed boost of the N64 Collesium cartridge, I literally leveled up every single final evolution in the original Blue to level 100, without the use of rock candy.  I just held up on a controller with auto-buttons while I played much more intently Baldur's Gate 2.  I could out-think anyone's team due to the sheer diversity of my stock, as well as the fact rock candies screw with your leveling stats (aka: leveling legit makes you more powerful).

Does this latest incarnation have any of those stupid "must catch during daylight hours" type pokemon that were in silver/gold?  That's one reason I never went beyond Blue, was the sheer ridiculousness you had to put up with to catch certain rare monsters.

The night/day system is back, but I don't know if that'll affect when Pokemon appear or not. I know it does affect certain moves, like the weather effects. So, for example, Solarbeam won't work as well at night, for obvious reasons.

The thing is, the DS's clock is adjustable, so it doesn't matter. If you want to catch a certain Pokemon but don't want to wake up early, save, turn off the DS, adjust the clock, and presto!
