Another Forced Listening Thread
« on: 03 Apr 2007, 09:30 »

I don't understand why these keep dying. Anyway, enough time has passed without one, so here goes.

The rules are simple, someone uploads a song (via www.yousendit.com or whatever crazy website you kids are using these days), next poster downloads, reviews and posts another track. And please be creative in your song choices, uploading something everyone knows serves no purpose.

Anyway,

Cheers for bringing the thread back, I love these.

Rodrygo y Gabriela - Viking Man

This was... not what I was expecting from the title of the track at all, but a pleasant surprise. Technically proficient, good progression and it's a genuinely good tune with interesting variation, not just a display of skill. We doing number scores? reckon this has gotta be an 8 or 9 / 10. Not my usual cuppa so I can't compare it easily, but by its own merits, it's a solid 4 minutes of music.

Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Nightwolf

Best appreciated in the dark with a nice spliff.

Thanks amok. I liked Nightwolf, even though I'm not a solid jazzhead or a fan of that kind of slow-paced you'd find in a noir film (I don't listen to too many things similar to Bohren.). It dragged a bit, but your description of how it should be appreciated had me set the place, and I get what you mean, so I enjoyed it more. A sweet track, so, 8/10?

It was alright, I guess, but I wasn't overly impressed by it. Kinda sounded like something from a B-List horror movie at the beginning and just didn't ever seem all that original to me. It was done well, though, so I'll give it a 6.5/10.

I was going to choose something all instrumental and beautiful, but I just love this song so much and I really want to share...

I couldn't help but reply to this one, sorry guys. I really liked this guy's voice, but then why would the band crete a song without instrumentation if he didn't have an awesome voice. I also like the lyrics a lot, they have that campfire choir sound to it.

Well, it started playing (on repeat), and 15 or so minutes later I suddenly realized that it was still going, if that gives you any idea as to my reaction. Good chill-out music, but not much more than that. I feel the same way about Telefon Tel Aviv; this may perhaps elicit some strong reactions (apparently they are "the shiz"). Same reaction, if the styles aren't really the same.

...Well, I suppose I have the blame for killing the last thread, so here you go: perhaps a little more palatable. (American Music Club - Another Morning)

This didn't really invoke any strong reactions on the first listen, except slight annoyance towards the singer. So I took a closer listen, and well, this is quite dull. There are lots of layers of instruments in the second half of the song, but none of them adding anything significant, it's all background music for a lazy-sounding vocalist. Then again, this is about as far removed from my tastes as possible. Based on my enjoyment, this is something close to a 4 out of 10.

I enjoyed this song, well, I enjoyed some of the growling? The song had a nice pace?
Crap, I'm just bullshitting this. I liked the rocking out and the steady buildup to awesome. There. 7/10 because I'm slightly biased, not listening to a lot of stuff like this. I'd have to give it a few more listens, the genre that is.

This is a fun track. It starts out with a really cool, funky bass riff, and then just piles layers of sound over it for two minutes, forsaking traditional song structure. The bass riff changes eventually, but when it does, the focus has shifted to the synths, vocals and guitars over it. The song flows really well, because there are no real transitions, there is always a layer or two of instruments to tie everything together. And everything really adds to the overall feel, instead of just making everything muddy. The vocals are the only thing I can complain about, spoken-word nonsense about possession/excersims, as far as I can tell, with a pretty annoying effect, really doesn't belong in such a dancy track. 7.5/10, which is quite high, considering I am not used to the genre, nor like the vocals.

This is pretty funny-sounding.  I could see myself listening to this more than once.  I like the vocalist.  I'm not sure how I would classify this.  I guess it would be fun-metal. 7/10

Forgot about this, I've been neglecting the poor thread.

Jad Fair and Daniel Johnston- I Did Acid With Caroline

I really liked this, I'm a sucker for this kind of thing at the moment. Ridiculously simple acoustic guitarrin' that works so much better for how basic it is. The vocals are the main focus of the song and while I'm not 100% sure about the guy's voice, it's got a certain charm to it and the lyrics are amusingly ace. 8/9 / 10, gonna give this another bash next time I get high 'cos I reckon I'll really get into it. Nice upload.

My next contribution is a super happy fun multimedia experience for all the family! Instead of uploading a track, I'm gonna link to this page and get y'all to scroll down and watch the video for 'Montreal -40?C'. Brilliant song with a nice whimsical video to go with it. The band is Malajube for those who already know 'em.

Decent axework, and the track has an interesting feel to it, although my usual caveat about Death Metal applies... it sounds sort of like the vocalist is puking into the mike. The last half of the track is definitely the best part... you could cut out most of the first half and it would stand well on its own. Unless there's some epic narrative that I'm missing because of the mike-puking factor.

5/10. 8/10 with Death Metal sensibilities factored in.

And now for something rather different... The Protomen, "Unrest in the House of Light"

Oh boy. That was... interesting. I like unique vocals, yes, but that's taking unique a little too far. I don't even know if I could consider that singing. And the music was a little too chaotic for my tastes. Definately wouldn't listen to it voluntarily. Good lyrics, though, and I appreciate the effort, so... 4/10.

Nice enough too listen to, didn't really jump out and grab me but yeah was enjoyable enough, I'm not sure what else to say really, guy with an acoustic singing. Lyrics didn't do much for me but they weren't really cringeworthy either so can't penalise for that... 6.5/10.

Well, first of all, this is a pretty crappy mix. The top frequencies have been absolutely cut off, the dostorted guitar is pretty muddy, the drums are ridiculously loud compared to everything else. And the singer sounds like he doesn't really know how to use his mic effectively, half the time he is way too distant, and when he isn't too distant he is way too loud.

So on to the song. Pretty much just gritty rock and roll with black metal vocals. The drums are playing something kinda dancy, the guitars are playing a pretty slow riff, which is neither aggressive nor fun at all. Which sucks because you can't hear any bass, and there are no other instruments, so guitars would have to carry the song, but play a disappointing power chord progression instead. And ooh, there is a solo, which is neither melodic nor flashy, just unpleasant to listen to, because of the terrible guitar sound. The vocals are black metal, clashing with everything else here, in addition to the vocalists inability to hold a mic correctly. Barely a 3/10. I guess a studio version of this would be a lot more bearable.

For a while there I thought it was going to be purely instrumental. It started getting a little old about halfway through, and I almost quite listening a little after that, but bringing the vocals in helped a lot. Very funky feel. I actually liked it quite a bit by the time I got to the end. Nothing too original, though, so it'll get a solid 7.5/10.

Black Harvest- Tamora
This is okay.  Not really my type of music.  The problem is, right now it sounds like a lot of nu-metal songs I've had the displeasure of hearing.  Or death metal.  I can't enjoy this in any way.  I guess I'm just not really into metal.  However, the piece seems creative.  I just can't deal with hearing the same chunky metal riffs in every metal song.  5/10

Deep Wound - "I Saw It"

I think I can definitely appreciate the lyrics (which I had to look up) more than the music; I don't listen to hardcore at all, but oddly enough I feel that the lyrics, slightly fleshed out, would feel at home in a folk song. It's interesting, even if I won't start looking into the genre because of it. 7/10

Anathallo - Dokkoise House (With Face Covered)
Brought to mind by the thread on time signatures. If the lyrics don't make sense, it's part of a concept album based on a Japanese folk tale; parts of the song are in Japanese.

Anathallo - Dokkoise House (With Face Covered)

All in all, a pretty good song. I might be slightly biased because so far i have liked what little of Anathallo's work i've heard and i'm kind of a sucker for toy piano (if that is what it is). I really like the subtle beginning. And the way it builds up to the middle part, especially the sparse vocals. The only thing i mind is the chorus (if it can be called that). Senseless or japanese as they might wish to be, i think the song would be almost as good without anything like this, especially something that repetitive. Fortunately, this part is followed by the most energetic or emotional point i guess. So, this deserves a 8/10. (Thanks for the song really)

Now my turn, a purely instrumental folk piece i've been having on repeat for a while:

This is pretty cool. I'm really into folk, but more a fan of the flute and fiddle thing than the acoustic guitar. But this is done really well, has some nice and even interesting melodies. It is pretty long, but does not get boring. I'm giving this an 8.5, likely because I'm a little biased in favor of folk music.

Sleep Terror - Autoerotic Spy

Hell of a tune this, although the one instant criticism that springs to mind is that maybe it seems to lack a bit of cohesion. It could have done with being another 30 seconds or so longer, with better transition from one part to the next. Having said that, each individual part is classic - nice heavy metal riffs then straight into manic widdly solo-ing reminiscent of Liquid Tension Experiment. Technically excellent but not in an annoying Yngwie kind of way, it's musically solid too. Would definitely check out more material by these guys - 8 or 9 / 10

Johnny Marr and the Healers - The Last Ride

It opens up kind of like it should be a Placebo song. And it goes on like it should be one. Not that that's particulary bad, it's just not giving me a really unique impression. I can definitely hear Marrs distinctive touch in it, but it comes off as a bit...I dunno. Mushy. Texturally it's very like a lot of other stuff, and I guess that makes it sound pretty generic...let's say a 6.5?

Now I am going to totally piss everone off
