folk/anti-folk/acoustic

i'm a fan of folk. specific names that pop into my head are, first and foremost, kimya dawson. i thought moldy peaches was awesome and than i heard her solo stuff. amazing. also, bob dylan, joanna newsom, nina nastasia, joni mitchell. that's all i can really think of right now.

my best friend plays folk, also. she told me of a local artist and played some of her songs for me and i was blown away. who is she? nicole reynolds. if you haven't heard her, i suggest you check her out.

Kimya Dawson!! I just saw her live a little while ago with a bunch of other people. It was an amazing show but extremely odd. She has random little girls she had just met sing some of her songs with her and her baby, Panda (yes that's the baby's name) banged on a little piano for one song. The audience (it was small) all sat on the floor while she played and it was so informal and friendly. After the show I talked to her, she hugged me, and I got her baby's father (not her husband), Angelo Spencer, to sign his cd (which I bought). Was a really great show. And Kimya is so talented.

Though her Myspace is frustratingly spare at the moment, Julie Doiron plays gorgeous folk and folk-rock, and usually plays unaccompanied.

i love how kimya always gets little kids to sing with her. antsy pants with leo from bear creek/the matching cubes/etc is so good. her kid is really cute. i always read her livejournal to see pictures of panda. ha.

and thank you for mentioning julie doiron! i've always heard about her, but never her actual music. i enjoy it though!

I just finished listening to Vashti Bunyan's Just Another Day. Very, very good, if you haven't heard it already.

And because I just can't get over her, Daisy May pretty much lights up my life right now.

I thought the term meant awkward art-school new yorkers with acoustic guitars. Kimya Dawson is extremely creepy which, I suppose, can be endearing to some.

This is seemingly what folk means to most people here full-stop.

Go listen to Steeleye Span or the Chieftans you greasy hipsters.

Hmmm...  I think that I have all of Steeleye Span's stuff (including the 25th Anniversary video), and all of the Chieftains, too.

That is all well and good. WELL AND GOOD.

Johnny, I don't understand your post. Neither of those artists had been mentioned at all. I'd definitely consider Utah Phillips folk, though not in the strictest, knitted waistcoat-wearing, pipe-smoking way (where every song MUST be 'trad').

Whilst searching for some more concrete things to recommend, I just discovered that Sol Invictus have recorded a version of The Blackleg Miner. It is awesome.

Right, where to start. A bit of anti-folk from Britain first of all with the Bobby McGees, who bill themselves as the best acoustic band in the entire world.

...label mates the Tiger Mcs from Norwich.

I can't believe no one has recommended any of the Weird/Free/Freak folk thats around at present.

Wooden Wand and the Vanishing Voice

P.G Six

Also see MV/EE and Sunburned Hand of the Man for starters.

Tara Jane O'Neil straddling the line of post-rock and folk music.

Something a bit more trad with The Secret Choir;

...and much loved by everyone; Vashti Bunyan.

Johnny, I don't understand your post. Neither of those artists had been mentioned at all.

For one, Utah's probably the folkiest individual I've ever had the pleasure of watching onstage. Dude's first song took a half hour despite being basically four choruses because he kept stopping to tell lengthy stories.

Also my post was in reference to the "this is what folk means to most people here." I listen to kindly old men AND awkward art-school New Yorkers!

I've been listening to Kimya Dawson non-stop lately, also Jeffrey Lewis. I really want to go to the olive juice festival this year, but I am having a very hard time recruiting friends to go with me.
