This is so damn hard question. There just isn't... wait.. there is.

Minutemen - History Lesson Part II

I nearly burst into tears when I saw the acoustic version on the We Jam Econo DVD. I find it hard to articulate just why I love this song so much, it's just so sweet and beautiful.

I rarely listen to it now, but it was my favourite as a wee one and it still makes me feel good like no other tune can.

It's just got an atmosphere to it that just sends shivers up my spine, from the intro right through to the end.

The Velocity of Saul at the Time of His Conversion by Okkervil River. Once, I got dumped and listened to it 72 times in a row. To be honest though, it was mostly on in the background as I cried.

One of my favorites too, Brittany.  On a par with Westfall and Black Sheep Boy, and if I were to pick an Okkervil River break-up song, it would definitely be something off of "Don't Fall In Love With Everyone You See".

I think anyone who loves music would find it difficult to narrow down a favorite -- most music junkies I know have different favorites for different moods, moments, what have you.

Among mine in the rock/pop idiom:

Joanna Newsom -- Only Skin
Yo La Tengo -- Black Flowers
Okkervil River -- Westfall (the live version off the Overboard & Down EP)
Dresden Dolls -- Mandy Goes to Med School
Metric -- Raw Sugar
mclusky -- Forget About Him I'm Mint
Sufjan Stevens -- Chicago
Laura Veirs -- The Cloud Room
RJD2 -- The Horror
DJ Shadow -- Organ Donor (Extended Overhaul)
The Avalanches -- Frontier Psychiatrist
Spoon -- Jonothan Fisk
Built to Spill -- Twin Falls
The Decemberists -- The Legionnaire's Lament
The Unicorns -- Tuff Ghost
Elliot Smith -- Baby Britain

. . . .

etc.

Oh god, this question is impossible for me to answer honestly.  So i'll go by my play count thinger on WMP.

And the winner is: "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White T's.  I honestly don't give a shit if they're mainstream as all hell, this song is freaking gorgeous.  It also holds a lot of sentimental value.

There are songs that are better from a technical and musical standpoint; there are songs with better lyrics, better hooks, better vocals. But "22,000 Days" by the Moody Blues still reigns supreme in my book, because of purely sentimental reasons that I'd rather not post here. Suffice to say, it got me through the stupid hormonal crap you face in high school that seems big, but really amounts to pure stupidity when you look back at it later.

I...HATE AC/DC.  I grew up listening to their music as well as every other band EVER from the freaking sixties up until the 90s.  I learned to tolerate most of it.  But then my little brother and his friends decided that AC/DC and every other crappy, popular band from the 80s are awesome and listen to them incessantly.  Something else unfortunate, i got my brother into some of the bands i like, and he listens to them so much, THEY start to get on my nerves now.  I HATE IT.  GRRR!!!

For sentimental reasons, "Logan to the Government Center" by Brand New and "Just a Day" by Feeder are both close to my heart.  "Halcyon and On and On" by Orbital is probably my current favorite, though.

Based on the 'of all time' bit, I feel kind of obliged to pick an Anathema song 'cos they were one of the first bands I got into and have probably had the most personal effect/meaning for me of all the shit I've listned though. Either 'Deep', 'Don't Look Too Far', 'Release' or 'Underworld'

Electronic division: Mind.In.A.Box - Change, Apoptygma Berzerk - Unicorn (Fairlight Children Rmx), VNV Nation - 'Epicentre' or 'Joy', Code 64 - Without You and Rotersand - 'Dare To Live' or 'Undone' have all been stalwart favourites over the years that I know I could never get tired of.

"Halcyon and On and On" by Orbital is probably my current favorite, though.

Kick ass! Nice pick. I probably wouldn't call this my favourite song overall but I always have to listen to it whenever I've been munching any mind-bending substances, 'cos being high on anything makes the track a quasi-religious experience. Many warm, fuzzy memories associated with this bad boy.

Bjork - Unison

Sums up Vespertine really well, which might just be one of the most personal albums of all time. Plus, I'm a sucker for sweeping melodies, strong voices, good build-ups, and delicately-arranged electronic music.

I'd have to concur on that one, although "Hypocrite" by Lush, "Beauty*2" by Ladytron and New Order's "Blue Monday" are up there as well.

what i consider great personal favorite songs are songs that you end up humming and singing to yourself while you cook or run around in the dirt.

for me, i gotta say its "naive melody (this must be the place)" by the Talking Heads
and recently, when Arcade Fire and David Byrne performed it live (found that mp3 that was floating around), i nearly had a happy little heart attack. it was the most beautiful thing i had ever heard... even as a crappy recording.

Yes that is a fucking good song, my favorite by Anathema.

The quiet whispered totally psychotic bit, leading into the second chorus, sends shivers down my spine every time

Climbing up the wall / Going to creep between the cracks
Get out of my skull / Tie the rope around my neck
Destroy all emotion / Going to rip my face to shreds
Cut my eyeballs open

Then straight back into the bit you quoted. Apart from maybe 'Panic', there's no other song on A Fine Day that completely captures the utterly insane intensity of the record like 'Underworld' does.
