I thought it might be good to have a thread about Black Sabbath, for general discussion etc. Is this sort of thread allowed?
So has anyone seen them on the tour they are doing now under the name Heaven and Hell?

Iron Man was the first song I learnt to play.

Heaven and Hell is one of my favorite Sabbath albums actually.

Their title song is brilliant in its simple composition.

For those who aren't sure, it's a root note (low G), the same notes an ocatave up and the diminished fifth (C# in this case). Those three notes, with the root G as a power chord during the intro and breaking the verses. It sounds brilliant and evil. It was designed specifically to use the "Devil's Note", the diminished fifth.

I also like the way Tony composes his riffs. Something that has continued to be a part of metal since EVER is the use of constrasting notes in terms of pitch. War Pigs is an awesome example of that, with the low E being struck four times with the high G triad being played afterwards in the riff just before the bridge. The verse riffs use this a lot, too, and it's brilliant how the contrast has basically been a staple metal technique without ever being mentioned.

I'd say Symptom of the universe is my favorite Black Sabbath riff, it's just absolutely kills.

That Ultra happy riff (I don't know how else to describe it) that comes in at about the 5min mark in A National Acrobat is damn good as well.

Sabbath have so many awesome riff's,  Supernaut is another one I like alot

I think a lot of the post Dio album's are horrendesly underrated, even the third Dio album (Dehumanizer) is pretty good.

The Tony Martin albums weren't bad either
"Tyr" is a great album, "Cross Purposes" is pretty good as is "Headless Cross", just a shame they never got the exposure after Dio left.

Mob Rules is my cut off point.

I would say that their first was the best they did. Vol. 4 is a close second.

I grew up on Black Sabbath, used to really enjoy them. I'd say that Tony is such an underrated guitarist, except that "underrated" gets used so much, it doesn't mean anything anymore, so I'll just say he's great and most people don't realize it.

For some reason, Heaven and Hell, the album, doesn't work for me as well as it should. I love Dio's voice, and the songs are good, but it just doesn't gel for me. Sadly, I'm so sick of Ozzy's voice from all the dreck he's released in later years, that I have trouble listening to the older stuff, too.

I'll still crank them up when they come on the radio, though, if that counts for anything.

I agree with the general consensus, that the first 5 Ozzy albums and the 2 Dio albums are all great. Everything else, not so much. I'd have to put Paranoid and Heaven and Hell as my favorite albums, but choosing is pretty damn hard.

Motherfuckin' Dio

Post-Dio. I'm looking for POST-Dio recommendations.

I'm insulted that you would even consider that I don't know how much Dio rocks. Weren't we just talking about this in Gabbly the other day? I was yelling extremely loudly about how much I was looking forward to the Heaven and Hell tour.

Sorry for being so late in replying considering I'm the threadstarter. But it's nice to see some fans, especially ones there are prepared to look past the Ozzy era. And to that guy looking for Post Dio stuff I suggest Born Again and TYR, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple is on Born Again and Tony Martin is on TYR. Also I recommend Dehuminizer, it's the album they did with the first re-union of Dio but it sounds very different to the typical Dio stuff.

Iommi is great. His riffs are just devestating. Even after years his riffs still stand in al their simplicity and heaviness.

I mean he doesn't have a very good voice, he didn't write the songs or even the lyrics (it was Geezer Butler in fact) and his solo career was embarrassing.

How would you classify his solo career as embarassing? I mean, he's put out a few bad albums, but a lot of his stuff has been gold. Since Sabbath, he's worked with some of the greatest guitarists of their generations (Rhandy Rhoads and Zakk Wylde in particular) and has put out some classic albums (Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman and No More Tears spring highest to mind for me).

In the case of Tony Iommi, hes even greater when you take into account the fact he's missing two fingertips on his fretting hand (Most of you probably know that, but there's plenty out there who don't). I know I sure as Hell couldn't do a simple power chord without them, but he wrote some of the greatest guitar riffs in music history after losing them.

A fair response. Nothing can appeal to everyone. I myself honestly prefer solo Ozzy to his days with Sabbath, overall.

Tony had prosthetic fingertips specially made for him, permanently "curved" (can't think of a better word) as they would be as he plays the guitar. So while his loss is not inconsequential, he does have five functional fingers on each hand to play with.  Yes, he had to adjust his fretting style a bit, but he has full fretting faculty on his left hand, and the unique challenge he had to overcome probably made him a better player and is part of what makes his sound/style so different.

As for Ozzy, I think a lot of people are just tired of the guy.  I know I am.  I'm not the only one who feels that his continuing to record and perform when he just couldn't do it any more hurt his image.  Things like "Crazy Train" and other earlier kickass tracks with Randy Rhoads were great, but "No More Tears" and anything he's done in the last ten years just makes me want to throw up.

cant go wrong with their 2nd album "Paranoid" or "Masters of Reality", also you cant go wrong with Ozzy's "Blizzard of Oz" "No more tears", I kinda digg the "Down to Earth" album he did back in 2001. also I cant to check Ozzy's new album in may.

The albums Ozzy did with Randy Rhoads are great, the rest of he's solo career I'm not such a fan off, Zakk Wylde is one of the most over rated guitarists ever.

Everyone is overlooking the Dio solo albums, some of those are amazing (Holy Diver, Last in Line, Strange Highways, even he's last album Master of the Moon is excellent). I'd definately put Dio in the top 5 metal singers around at the moment.

It's another example of Iommi's brilliance in writing. A few chords and simple licks come together to make an incredibly powerful song.

The whole process of learning that song, for me, was an absolute pleasure... like a lot of Sabbath's best stuff, it contains this odd mixture of minimalism and abrupt changes in riffs, even if there are only four real riffs in there. The best thing about that song is how relevant it is today, too.

Yep, which is why his right hand is the fretting one.

As for Ozzy's solo career I never understood people's reaction to it. I think it's great and all but when people say they hate the post-ozzy stuff cos it's not the same as old Sabbath, well neither is Ozzy's solo career.

I've never really liked Black Sabbath, and I think it's mostly because I've never liked Ozzy, who I think is an awful vocalist both in terms of delivery and creativity. I'll admit that I've never actually heard any post-Ozzy Sabbath though, and I've found Dio to be pretty entertaining otherwise, so perhaps I should give it a shot.

I did say left, 'cause I don't play guitar and always have to think about which hand is for fretting and which is for picking (and no, those probably aren't even the correct terms) and totally forgot that Tony's left-handed.
