Pan's Labyrinth, and other such movies
« on: 07 Jun 2007, 23:52 »

Has anyone seen (or even heard of) Pan's Labyrinth? My friend recently saw it and said it made him cry. And he's not one to cry, ever.

So I have to see it before I die. I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on this movie?

Basic summary and (mostly good) reviews found here :  http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pans_labyrinth/  (I love Rotten Tomatoes)

Good (almost haunting) trailer found here : http://www.apple.com/trailers/picturehouse/panslabyrinth/trailer/

I'm always into weird movies that make you think (ala Donnie Darko<3, American Beauty, Me, You and Everyone We Know.) Alright so most of those are just effed up but still. I like 'em.

What else would you recommend I watch?

Pan's Labyrinth was indeed a phenomenal movie.  Sort of a fairy-tale for adults.  Parts of it are uber-creepy, and parts just downright suspenseful, but it's really just about a little girl trying to escape her life, which becomes horrible when her mother marries a cruel military man and they move to a military outpost.  It is a beautiful movie, so if you respond to strong visual images, you'll enjoy that aspect as well as the story.  I would highly recommend it.

Since you're asking for recommendations, the other movie I've seen recently that fits into this weird artistic beautiful cool movie categort is The Fountain (written and directed by Aronofsky, who also wrote and directed Pi).  It is fascinating, and very emotional and positively gorgeous.  Like a piece of art on the screen.  My husband and I were silent for a full 20 minutes after we saw this in the theatre (and believe me, that NEVER happens with us after a movie).  We just couldn't talk about it yet - the spell of the movie had to wear off.

The Devil's Backbone (otherwise known as El espinazo del diablo) is the prequel, in spirit, to Pan's Labyrinth. See it!

Does anyone else think that Pan's Labyrinth got dicked by the Oscars?

If you liked American Beauty, you might like the Rules of Attraction. Just a warning while watching it; You're not supposed to like any of the characters. That's my favorite kind of story, but it puts some people off. You might also like Requiem for a Dream, which is easily one of the most disturbing films I've ever seen.

I know at this point I'm kind of just prolonging a thread that doesn't really need to exist much longer, but. . .

Blood Diamond

I see absolutely no connection at all between Blood Diamond and Pan's Labyrinth. Not in terms of style, tone, theme, setting...anything. Both are set during a violent conflict and that's it. I loved Pan's Labyrinth, I though Blood Diamond was Hollywood shlock. I have to agree with The Fountain though. Both movies combine elements of reality with science fiction/fantasy. Both employ some beautiful artistic design and cinematography. In general, both are really excellent films.

No clue, but I liked the movie so...there ya go?

You guys, the only reason I mentioned those movies were because the movies in the post above mine both had Jennifer Connely in them. It's not like I actually pay attention to anything going on in the thread. I just kinda take the last thing that was said and run with it.

Sorry you wrote all that out Wombat. I hope you don't get  furious  at me, but instead, get   bi-  curious   and consider making kisses on me? Maybe??

I saw this movie in theatres and it both:

A.) Scared me shitless (baby eating monster thing) and
B.) Made me weep like a little child which I have only done for A.I, The Lion King and Children of Men.

Good little movie I'd have to say.
