Keeping this thread alive... a few character sketches for a webcomic called "Zeus and sons" I'm launching soon. It'll be a comical rendition of the Greek myths in our times (screw togas).

Drawn with a pencil, scanned, multifilled, and otherwise digitally altered to produce this. From next week on, I'll be the happy owner of a tablet, so I can hopefully draw neater lines directly on the computer.

OMG BEWBAGE

I've just realised the sort of band in her head has been coloured the colour of her hair. Blah, I'll need to fix that.

Emoness for the muse of tragedy.

from my one notebook when I was in college, not up to par with what i've seen in the thread, but here it is:
cranes in the cover

and phalaenopsis orchids

Dude you're kidding right? Your stuff is the most technically skilled art in the whole thread.

Also somethign from my sketchbook, a character design for a short story comic and a quick sketch of a girl I saw at the movie theatre, ignore the shit showing through from the page behind.

Actually, I think a simple adjusting of the colour levels would make the stuff from the other side of the sheet disappear. I had that problem when my thrifty self decided to draw characters on both sides of the paper... useful when you have a shitload to design.

Expressions for a character that's always smiley and one that's a bit... well, that's Ares. What do you expect?

And a sketch of the Discord.

It's what I was aiming for, something so small it doesn't qualify as a miniskirt and never will :p Now if this is her notion of a skirt, imagine what she would call a bikini.

Wikipedia disagrees with you. Plus Adonis wasn't a god.

With the Greek gods, you gotta remember almost every Olympian got it on with at least 1 mortal.
I'm not gonna try to count how many chicks Zeus got.

Who, Thalia or Melpomene? The former is looking at her sister, and the latter is ignoring everything and moaning about something or other.
As to my line art, I would be more than happy to improve it, if you could tell me what exactly is wrong with it and how I could fix it.

I am guessing he is talking about the line quality. Around all the sad woman's hair the lines are all sketchy, and in general the lines are inconsistent with their widths, making them not look very smooth. You are doing this on a tablet, right? What is the size of the canvas-thingy are you using? I found that even though it seems a bit silly, if I use a large sized thing then the lines look smoother than if I use a smaller one, because when I resize the picture to not being ginormous it smooths out the little bumps in the lines that occur when I try and neaten them up. Uhm, for a comparison, look at these two pictures:

vs.

They are about the same level of sketchiness, but the dancer's lines look cleaner than the gypsy. I can't find an already-uploaded example on my photobucket, but my lines generally are all over the place with the thicknesses when I have really sketchy lines that I neaten up and make thinner with the eraser and they are all wobbly-looking. Shrinky-dinking things to remove the little inconsistencies is what a lot of people (including Jeph, if I remember correctly) do.

Oh, I get what you mean :) To answer the question, those are the unshrunken pictures, which I draw on 600x600 canvas with a 3 pixel brush (not the pencil, for a less pixelly aspect). I end up shrinking them to about 50% scale, of course. My pages would be ginormous otherwise. Also, it probably doesn't help that my drawing style on paper is rather sketchy too...

Preview after resizing, and sorry about the white bits around Melpie, I don't know what the hell Potatobukkit did to my images in the first place:

The lines are still really sketchy though.  You should probably try sketching out your pics then creating a new layer and going over what you've sketched so the lines are more fluid.

ok, that sized canvas is really probably too small unless you have a really really steady hand. Tom Siddell draws Gunnerkrigg Court on an a4 sized canvas, and then resizes it for the website. That's 2480x3508 pixels. The picture of the dancer that I showed up there was drawn on that sized canvas as well. Now, this series of examples is hopefully going to explain what I mean when I say that larger sized canvasses help with your lines maybe a bit better than the last post (sorry about the boobage, btw). I am using a 10-15pixel brush, by the way for this.

- 100%
- 75%
- 50%
- 25%

You see how terribly messy the lines are? But as you get smaller that stuff isn't as noticeable, so you don't have to be so meticulous when smoothing out your line (you should still neaten them up more than I have, though). Est makes a good point about having your sketchy stuff on a separate layer underneath the linework, because then you can be more confident in your lines. But yeah, cleaning up any stray lines in your linework will probably improve it immensely, but working on a larger scale will also help smooth things out a little more.
I normally work with a 600x800 canvas if I am just playing around drawing something or trying out something different and it  will be a quick piece. If you are going to do a comic, then a larger canvas is really going to make your work look that bit more professional.

I should have made it more explicit - I draw each character on a 600x600 canvas. The final canvas is in A4 format. However, I'll follow your advice and draw my characters on individual canvas at least twice as big as they are now (so, four times as big as the final result), if not more. I definitely want to improve, and I know only taking criticism will enable me to :)

Oh, PrickOfDestiny, I just thought of something while looking at your pictures. Do you have a soft edge on your brush, or is it at 100% hardness or thereabouts? I am drawing something at the moment and at 44% hardness (and, uh, 15-20px brush) and realised that that also may help with your pixelly-ness of your lines.

Plus, a 5px brush is normally what I use for super fine detail, just thinking about using one that small for a whole picture is mind boggling; there are times when I will use 50px brushes for shading (hell, I'll probably use one of those with no hardness in this picture just for fun), but then again, I do my colouring differently than you do.. Oh, and I didn't realise you are using a separate canvas for each person; maybe that is why when you have more than one person interacting with each other it kinda looks off? If you draw them together on the same canvas it would help making interactions clearer and less stiff, and also probably help with composition of pictures more in general (thinking about your comic deal). Are you using references for your pictures?

I'm using the brush tool in GIMP (as opposed to the pencil one, that has hard borders), and actually at 3 px wide (yes :D). Maybe you're right and I should merely draw my characters on different layers of a same canvas. I tend to not use references for humans, other than what my drawing mannequin can give me, either, unless I'm drawing, say, a baby, because of the different proportions.

For a look at the "before-after" of the shrinking of images...

Urania before, drawn on a 1200x1200 canvas with a 3px wide soft brush:

oh ok, I have worked out why your lines look all pixelly when they are small; Your lines need cleaning up when you are doing the inking. I know that sketchiness is part of your style and all that, but looking at the large version of that picture with the lines all uneven and there being extra lines just make it look lazy or amateurish. Seriously, look at the pointed hand and see how messy those lines are. They should be fixed up so that the lines are smooth, then it will look better.

One of the other drawing forums I lurk on (megatoyo's drawing subforum, it's really helpful and there are some really great artists on there, but they are a 'teaching forum' and really harsh and big on lifedrawing. They give homework) is very big on people not using lots of little lines, and encourage people to use larger single lines, as they are smoother and help the artist to learn how to conserve lines on the pictures to more effectively show the shape of the thing. Or something like that, at least. I generally use a lot of little sketchy lines like you do, but also spend forever cleaning them up so they are as smooth as I can get them. I am also trying to get out of that habit.

Ok, I am going to take a break on this for a little bit, but here is my latest picture so far (and sadly the first one I have used a reference for; NSFW)

gumboots are hard to draw! I am still struggling on the one I have drawn. Plus I am trying to play with lineweight as well, though it's not really that noticeable now that I look at the resized image.

oh ok, I have worked out why your lines look all pixelly when they are small; Your lines need cleaning up when you are doing the inking.

Thanks, I'll try to make the appropriate compromise between speed (if I want to update once a week, I can't spend *very* long on artwork, considering I'm also in the middle of a summer project) and quality. I'll try to draw fewer little lines, and more long, smooth lines. Because, when I was a child, I was taught to draw with little lines for more control, it may prove hard, but as they say, no pain, no gain, right? :D

Use References for everything! Deviantart has a ton of stock photos that are great for this.

For every pose of every panel? I may be somewhat dedicated, but this sounds... tedious.

Also, this is what happens when I draw with long smooth lines. Is it any better?

That looks much, much better.

References are good, but most of the time I am too lazy to go looking for one. They are good because they will help your anatomy, colouring, making clothes look more realistic, and, uh, that is all I can think of off the top of my head. They basically are a quick and simple way of seeing if what you have drawn is actually physically possible or not.

You probably wouldn't need to use references for every pose of every panel, but references will help making your poses more natural and expressive and dynamic (i guess?) than using the little wooden model-thing. Oh oh, they will help with things that you probably wouldn't notice like centre of gravity, or showing movement. Then again, the whole extensive use of references deal might be better if you do all that for standalone pieces, rather than your comic, seeing as you have said you only have a certain amount of time to work on them. Maybe more like if you are doing character sheets, or pictures on them for your website, then using references would be good because you can spend short amounts of time on the pictures over a long period and not have to worry about churning out the stuff.

References really do help a lot, though. Any examples I can think of for the last two pictures you have posted though are more about colouring than anatomy, other than hand issues (but hands are hard, so they are understandable) and some of your poses seem awkward if someone in real life was doing them.

Jenny from the excellent Zombie Hunters uses a nifty poser program.

Expensive though.

Also, I have some nice art I want to post but this stupid mac doesn't have a SD card slot. Huagh

You could probably use Poser to put a character into the exact pose that you want as a reference if you are having trouble with it and can't find a decent photo ref.  I wouldn't advocarte paying $250 USD for it, though :/

I'll go with the old-school, low-price alternative I've already bought :D

Also, I appear to have the very opposite of the artist's block. My mind is full of ideas and my stylus is moving at the speed of light.

Hey cool, I'd forgotten about those things!

The two drawings you just posted are looking a hell of a lot better to my untrained eye.  There's a lot less of the sketchiness of the previous ones, so uh, hurrah?

All I can really say is that the naked lady's boobs look like fleshy sacks hanging off her chest, especially the one on the right (her left). Boobs don't work that way; it things like that where references are good, they can just tighten up bit of anatomy like that. Also, with the sign in the second picture, the top and bottom of it are at different angles, but that's little nitpicky stuff that isn't really that noticeable. They have much better line quality, I agree with est.

All the art students I know have told me to not bother with those models, and that they don't even use them (other than a jewellery holder), so never using one I don't really have an opinion of them, just what other people say.
