A while back, someone requested a clip of how my X-tone sounds clean:

http://download.yousendit.com/5E984C0747B03029 Here it is!
The playing is extremely sloppy, due to a bad hangover and not really having eaten enough today so my hands are shaky and fucked up.
Recorded without a metronome as well.

I know nothing about guitars. I just started learning to play yesterday, even though my Dad has played since before I was born. To speak in terms general, I'm thinking I eventually want a 12 string electric, and I thought I'd wanted a plexiglass body until I realized it would scratch all to heck. Plus, I don't actually know how a plexiglass body would affect the sound, I just thought it would look cool.

Why do you want a twelve string? I mean, sure, I'd like one, but it'll never replace my 6 strings as my main guitar.

The only experience I have with them is knowing that the dudes from Fu Manchu play old Ampeg Dan Amstrongs pretty much exclusively, and I love their tone (though that may have to do with all the recockulous amounts of fuzz).

It's a pretty decent tone overall. Bright and punchy with dimed tone knobs. You lose surprisingly little tone quality considering the thing is made of science.

Guys if you want something equally tacky but less expensive, try Dillion's Crystal Series.

So guys, I'm thinking of taking my strat, and moding it so there'll be an extra switch that turns on the bridge pickup in series with whatever else is on (like with the extra switch on and the 5 way on position 1 the neck and bridges pickups would be on in series, where position 2 on the 5 way would have neck and mid in parallel with the bridge in series).  I'm thinking this would make for some interestingly awesome tones, especially the tele-like neck/bridge.  Anyone care to give some insight?

What's the general consensus on double neck 6/12's? Just to friggin' weird for the casual player, or awesome 2 for the price of 1 deal? Is this the wrong thread for this question?

I've got a question about something that's been confusing me for a few days now.  When using any kind of effects pedal, a fuzz pedal, for instance, do you go from the guitar, into the pedal, then into the input on the amp, or the effects loop input if the amp has one?

Or is there something special that goes in there, like a loop station?

You can go directly from guitar - pedal - amp.

I have not had experience with an amp that has an effects loop.

Yeah, that's what I used to do with my other amp, before I blew it.  The one I have now, though, sounds like it's being played in a really big room from really far away when I use my pedal with it.  However, when I have one channel set to clean, and the other set to overdrive, and I switch between them while playing, it makes this really loud and really annoying popping noise.  So, I really am never satisfied with it.

What's the general consensus on double neck 6/12's? Just to friggin' weird for the casual player, or awesome 2 for the price of 1 deal? Is this the wrong thread for this question?

I wouldn't say "weird."  "Unnecessary" is more like it.  If you're buying an electric guitar, and you want it to sound like a twelve string, you could buy a regular six string and use a chorus effect.  It'd save you an assload of money if you're just going to play casually.

It's not the same thing, though. Sure, it works for the E and B strings, because with those two pairs, that's all it really is anyway, just a natural chorus. With the other 4 pairs, though, it's octaves, and it makes for stunningly beautiful lead/rhythm lines like (as I've said) the Byrds.

Seriously is there a guitarist anywhere in the world as underrated as the dude who played that 12-string for them?

i tried the "fuzz in the effects loop" thing thing back around '84 with the opamp version of the EH Muff Fuzz using a then-new Fender Twin Reverb II.

NOT A GOOD IDEA.

There's a lot of fans of Roger McGuinn, but he kinda deserves being underrated.

I mean, in the late 60s, he invited Clarence White into the band.   You *have* to take the backseat to Clarence White on six-string.  It's the law in six states!

Be careful.  Turning off pickups in series can be a PITA.  Draw up a schematic before you do it.

As far as what it'll sound like, lemme get a new neck put on my now 2-p/u Strat and I'll tell you.

Oh man 12-string guitars are such amazing-sounding instruments. Have you never heard the live version of "Stairway"? When Page switches to the neck pickup on the 12-srting half of that EDS-1275, it's still one of the most hauntingly beautiful guitar sounds I've ever heard. Switch to both pickups and you'll get a sparkling Byrds-esque sound, and with the bridge pickup... well, I never tried it when I played the 1275 I played. Never needed to.

That's why I was thinking a double neck would be cool. There're 3 guitars in our household already (though I only feel comfortable borrowing one of my dad's 2, rather than my brother's 1), and if I got electric, it'd be the first in the house. I'm sure as soon as I get a guitar of my own, it'd just be a little awkward to keep borrowing others', so I'd be down to what I own myself. Double neck is the ultimate 2 for 1, plus you can play those songs that transition between 6 and 12 without trouble. Now if I only had another pair of arms, I could be half a band!

and it's massive, heavy and annoying to transport.

When did you turn into such a WOMAN Gaz

Besides, when I played that one 1275, it was really no heavier than a Les Paul. It was just a slightly wider (read: wide as a 335) body with two necks. So it balances like a fucking whale on stilts, but it's really not THAT bad.

As far as playability and awkwardness goes, it's really not bad at all. The pickups of any guitar I play are normally right above mah wang anyway, and so as a result, the 12-string's pickups will end up about where your bellybutton is. I've got a suede strap that I use for my SG (God damn that strap is a perfect match for that guitar) and if you get one of those for a 1275 it'll be just as sexy.

Just do yourself a favor and get strap locks, just like any other guitar. If that strap button ever manages to come loose, that guitar may not be Mike Tyson but it is pretty chunky and will be a lot harder to keep from smashing into the ground.

When did you turn into such a WOMAN Gaz

Besides, when I played that one 1275, it was really no heavier than a Les Paul.

Les Pauls are stupidly heavy as well. And I turned into a woman when I had to spend the last three years on pain medication for back issues - and yes, I thought Les Pauls were too heavy before the injury.

Well, yeah, but just 'cause it's heavy to you doesn't mean it should stop everybody ever from buying them. *shrug*

And these days, the new ones have chambered bodies anyway, right? How heavy are those?

Ridiculously light. It just feels wrong to me, honestly, but I'm one of those crazy fucks that actually LIKE the weight of a good Les Paul.
