I am used to a strat, I imagine the old kind of les paul would feel kinda heavy. And, I am a wimp.

Nah. Even wrapped in duct tape (and I think I might add more, in different colors), my Squier is hell of light.

Yeah, I was hanging out at a luthier buddy's of mine this eve.  He's got a (future) Les Paul body laying around, and fuck, thing must weigh fifteen pounds.  Granted, one or two of those will be routed and sanded off, but there's not even a neck yet.

Guitars should be heavy.

I agree here, but it relates very much to strap height.
I hang my Les Pauls low. Like James-Freakin'-Hetfield-Low. When they're down there, they need to weigh half a ton in my opinion.

Whenever I play something at chest height, I prefer it to be light though.
I can easily imagine having a Les Paul above waist line will be painful. I've never tried.

I saw a band called Everybody Out! this past weekend, and their guitarist hangs his LP so low, he has to pick up around the 14th and 15th frets, so's he doesn't thwack the pickup selector.

It looked pretty ridiculous, and really, I can't see how that'd be comfortable at all.

(Of course, they were opening for Dropkick Murphys, and I'd be hard pressed not to mention Ken Casey and his low-slung P-Bass. There's a bit in the "State of Massachusetts" video where he kinda hunches over, and it looks like the bass is down around his ankles.)

Okay, that is quite excessive, plus it must sound muddy as all hell :S

I can still play comfortably with the strings a good couple of inches below belt level. Long arms ftw!

Yeah, the only thing that it's alright to hang super low is a BC Rich, and thats because it cannot possibly look any worse than it already does.

Yeah, but punk bands aren't usually known for amazingly clean tones anyway.

over the years, It's become more of a feel thing for me. I started out wanting to look cool, as with everyone else.

However, in the last few years I've started going to two extremes; super-high or super-(ish)-low.

When I have it low, it feels more "right" for the rockin' stuff, since I like the fact that I can really beat the shit out of it, and put pretty much the entire body in to my playing. It's more intuitive, I guess.

When I have it high, it's for the technical stuff, plus it's kinda necessary with the 7-string, since I have fairly smalle hands.

This pic is kind of misleading as those suspender britches come up kind of high like real old men wear. They aren't under-my-armpits-old-man-style, but the nitefly is kind of on my hip there. Ouch almost backed into that light saber someone left unattended...

Bass is of course a whole different kettle of fish but I think if I played guitar I'd still have the guitar disconcertingly high. I find it easier to play and I prefer the way it looks.

I have to wear mine pretty low if I'm playing righthanded, and pretty high if I'm playing left.  Different strokes for the same folks.

Actually it'll be worse for your back the lower you have it, so more logical would be having the lighter guitars lower and the heavier guitars higher - if you care about that sort of thing.

I have my guitars at about waist level, because that's where it's most comfortable for both my back and my arms. Having it lower for most people is very much style over substance and most people I know who wear it that low are pop-punk guitarists who can't play for shit (note: THESE THINGS ARE PREDOMINANTLY UNRELATED).

I play my bass pretty high; but, I play with my fingers instead of a pick, and I use the whole neck.  I was taught to play with VERY traditional technique.  I stray from it sometimes (for instance I play with my left hand fingers curled like a guitar player instead of flat like most jazz guys), but the position is just so much more comfortable and everything is more accessible.  I am about medium with a guitar.   I have never had the desire to sling a guitar or a bass low and have to lean over to be able to reach the strings (I'm looking at you Korn kids- blech).

It's a little weird, but you get used to it. I'm apparently too tall and broad shouldered for regular-length guitar straps. One of these days I'm just gonna buy an old seatbelt cable and make my own.

My PRSes hang just right with a regular strap, with the top of the guitar not quite clearing the top of my hipbones. Perfect balance of fretboard access and not looking like a prog-rock/Tom Morello douchebag.

One thing I've been doing for the past couple years is holding the guitar classical-style, on my left knee instead of my right, when playing seated. It's so much fucking easier to play this way.

Yeah, i have noticed that. I was fine playing with it on the right, until I started playing ode to joy, lowest fret I had to finger was the tenth, my left leg kept getting in the way if I had it on my right leg.

I have always played with my guitar on my right thigh just because, well, it seemed the best place to play it. It's really awkward to reach the frets near the nut if it's on the other knee.

I haven't noticed that, personally. But then again, I have disproportionately long arms. I usually play on my right knee, but when I know I am going to have to play up past the ninth fret, I switch.

My legs usually end up being angled up as well, unless the chair is adjustable. That could have to do with it. Also the model, what model is your guitar?

This double neck looks awesomazing to me. I particularly like the abalone inlay, but I don't know much about guitars. Is it awesomazing (in more than looks)? I was thinking of asking how much it weighs.

After posting, I found a customer review of the guitar. It scored well (mostly). The buyer also really liked the appearance, and gave it a rave review. Problem is he gave the sound quality a 2 out of 10. Replace the hardware (as the other buyer planned)?
Probably shouldn't bother.

This is an example link. It is probably the least useful link you will ever see on the internet. You'll like this site, but you probably know the url already.

Just buy the same gauge strings every time you need to re-string her. I hate it when people buy fixed-bridge instruments and then they put lighter-gauge strings on it and they complain "omg my instrument haz terrible intonation wtf this is a piece of shit" and give it a terrible rating on every site they find.

Also, play it before you buy it, especially at that price. God knows where they made it. Humidity can wreak havoc on an unfinished instrument.

Hmm if you buy a $80 mandolin it might very well turn out crap. I bought a AU$90 one or something (or was it AU$190?) and it kinda blows. But most mandolins I've played are pretty hard to play anyway. Those strings really eat up your fingers.

Well, even if it does turn out to be a bad investment, I'm really just looking for something to practice on until I can get a nice one, and $80 is a pretty small amount for a new instrument.

Incidentally, the last time I had to restring my acoustic, I messed around with the tunings until i had the equivalent of a mandolin with 6 strings (doubled on the 1st and 6th strings with the 2nd and 5th).  It actually had a pretty interesting sound cause I could leave the first and last strings open with other stuff.  It was cool, I named it the Mandotar tuning.  I think it was:

g g d' a'  e" e"

If you have to change strings anyway, try it out

So I went to Guitar Center for the first time as a guitar player (I'm sure I've mentioned I've been playing only 6 days). I'd been there before with my dad and was bored out of my skull. Now, it's a magical wonderland. I've now tried a 12/6 double neck electric, and have fallen in love. I don't want to compromise on quality. I'll probably (eventually) get a guitar from them, rather than following my above mentioned hair-brained ebay scheme.
Also basses are weird instruments, in a cool way. If I had to play bass, I'd want to try to learn on a 6 string fretless. Of course, I'm sure fretlessness would have to affect intonation. I'd have to hear what it sounds like. Plus, the combination of 6 string fretless, like the combination of 12 string clear body (or, my personal holy grail, the double neck clear body, if it doesn't negatively affect sound too much), is probably nonexistant or at least very rare.

I'm using the word 'affect' a lot.

Mandolins are so cheap, that even if it turns out to be not what you want it can likely be worth every penny. You can always sell it on.
Not if you smash it at the end of a performance.

I am enamored of double-neck bass/guitar combos.  I love the lawsuit Ibanez that the bassist/guitarist/vocalist from Boris uses, and he also has a weird headless one that looks cool.

Yeah, those things are pretty awesome, but the cooler thing is definitely that Guitar/Bass combo that has one neck I posted earlier in the thread.  Let me see if I can find it...
EDIT:

Yeah, that thing is crazy go nuts right there.

Thats cool, but it seems like it would only be practical for tapping.
