I saw Ibanez's 2009 catalog a few weeks back. Every guitar looked the same to me.

Building's cheaper, dude.

Shane i have to warn you, Everyone Iv'e talked to about building guitars, even from pre-made parts, has said that there is a good chance it will be just as expensive, at least on your first try. Even with a bunch of bolt-on parts, it's not just an investment of money, but of time and more importantly skill, which may or may not take a few tries to get right. That being said, it still seems like a wholly worthwhile pursuit, and there's a good chance it will come out fine the first try.

on that note, a while ago the TDPRI forums had a $100 telecaster challenge. The rules were simple: make a tele in a month for a hundred dollars or less. Don't count the price of lumber. The results were awesome. here's a good one:

I have built a lot of guitars, and my average price to build now is about $400 a pop.  I could probably shave about a hundred bucks off that if I wanted to, but I'm not an excessively cheap person.

When I first started and was having to buy tools and things... I was up over $600 per instrument.

Seeing that the Fenders I'd rather build clones of run about $1000-1200 now, not bad.

All Ibanez guitar's that have prestige neck's are some of the nicest playing guitars. ever. And the one's made in their custom shop are one of the best guitars ever in terms of versatility -  style and tone wise. I think's it's funny that some people just look at the guitar and think THEYALLLOOKTHESAMESHREDSHREDHARMONICSQUEELYDIMISHEDARPEGGIO. Yes, a lot of technically proficient players like to play them - but that's because Ibanezes are great guitars. At least they look more attractive than Steinbergers.

The German Autobahns are a series of highways - and the first autobahn was constructed in 1931.

A f#@$ing Supro reissue.

Add another one to my to-buy list.

- SG '61 Reissue
- Orville By Gibson Goldtop
- Telecaster Custom '62 CIJ
- AIY (Assemble it Yourself) Strat, Telecaster Single - Strat Single - Mini-Humbucker. Some sort of Nashville Strat.
- Ceriatone 18W TMB
- Dr. Z MAZ 18 Jr.
- A decent cab, no Celestion V30s allowed. Probably Golds or Blues (not my cuppa tea).
- Deluxe Memory Man (yeaaah, another one.)
- Fulltone Clydewah
- Eastwood Supro

Sheesh, that's over 5k$ of stuff.

I hadn't realized until a few weeks ago how insane Gibson's jacked up their prices lately. I remember when those faded SG Specials went for like $600, they're nearly a grand now.

Holy cow.

On a whim --and for no apparent reason-- my wife just brought me home a Peavy EXP signature series guitar.   Mahogany body, rosewood fingerboard, and a gorgeous quilt top.  Except for the fact that my fingerboard only has an inlay at the 12th fret, it looks just like this one.

I'm not certain that I would have gone and bought one for myself, but holy crap, for essentially randomly selecting me a guitar in a store and hoping I'd like it, it sure does play great.

Almost suspiciously oresum, but oresum nonetheless.

So I was talking to Shane about this.

Someone's offered me a 1993 Olympic White Squier Strat in place of money to give them guitar lessons. I want to take it and mod the shit out of it- possibly turn it into a VOX Teardrop. Ideas?

Depends on the quantity of lessons you plan on giving.  I'd say 4-6 weeks at half an hour a week for that sounds about right.  I'm always down for modding cheap guitars, but I've never really done much body modification to them (and by much I mean any)

Doesn't VOX still sell the teardrop guitar?  Does anyone know how they compare to the vintage ones?

And back to that Supro Dual Tone - I know Supro still makes them, would anyone know how they compare to Eastwoods model, and/or to the original Res-o-glass models?  I know a new actual Supro runs ~$2000 and the Eastwood is $600.

VOX doesn't make guitars at all anymore. I think they've reissued the Brian Jones model specifically but I'm not too interested, particularly because Phantom Guitar Works makes great re-issues at a better price.

If I'm gonna get a real VOX Teardrop I'll get a vintage one.

I didn't mean ideas on the value of the guitar. I meant ideas on what I can do with it and whether or not it's worth giving lessons for at all when I can be earning money instead from other people.

I was referring to THESE unless I'm mistaken.

I'm not sure to tell you what to do with it unless I know what you want.  Personally I'd like to put some Red and Blue LACE pickups in a Strat, or preferably a Tele.  Honestly you are probably better off charging for lessons.  You are going to be spending more money than the guitar is worth modding it, and not getting any money for the work you would be doing in the mean time.

Matt, the shop I used to work at stocked pretty much their entire line. They all play really well and are solid quality.

Radical AC, yeah those are the ones. The white one at the top is the Brian Jones model and I guess they've put out a few more. "Limited edition replicas" aren't exactly what I'm looking for.

I'll buy vintage for my VOX needs. I was just curious what I can do with that Squier.

If not for the color of the pickups, the lack of inlays (as Shane pointed out to me on AIM) and the godawful pickguard, I'd really actually love to have one.

I mean, put a white SG-esque pickguard on there (the big kind, not the '61-'63 kind) and some nickel pickup covers and you are pretty much set. I mean really, is it that far from being a Wilshire? If you did what I described, Jack White would probably cream himself.

Decisions, decisions...

Alright, my first guitar was an 86 or 87 red-and-white hard tail strat.  I played it for awhile, and sometime in 88 or 89 I traded it in for an SG, which I pawned in 91 for tattoo and booze money.

Anyway... those two guitars are my "Damn, I wish I still had that guitar" guitars, and my local shop has a beat-to-hell 84 red and white hard tail strat for sale.  I know the mid-eightes are hardly desirable collector years for Fenders, but something about that well played strat makes me wish I still had my first one.   Given that I already own a few strats, that I rarely play them, and that it is a CBS-era Fender, I can't decide if I want to go plunk the money down on it or not (especially since I don't much care for the neck profile)   But something about it is calling me...

*shrug*  Maybe I'll have another strat tomorrow.

If you had a fat grip of cash right now, would you buy an old-but-not-vintage strat?   Just curious.

Depends on the cost.  I put a stupid amount of money into repairs on my Danelectro reissue because it has sentimental value.  I think I payed $180 for the guitar, and I've put almost that amount into it for repairs, etc.  If the sentiment is more important than the cash, go for it.
