The White Stripes - Icky Thump
« on: 14 Jun 2007, 16:57 »

I was going to wait until next tuesday when this cd came out to make this thread but i just heard the title track "Icky Thump" for the first time i got way too excited to wait. Is anyone else as stupidly excited for this as me? i've been craving a new White Stripes album for awhile now (The Raconteurs release did help alittle, though) and I am super stoked to pick this up.
I guess i'll "review" it or whatever when i get it.

I've been pumping the new Maserati for months now, and I think it's just coming out in America this month.

It most certainly is. Jack sure is enjoying the guitar at the moment- some parts it's just insane. Really cool album- very different from anything else they've done.

Is it poppy? I don't hear that, songs like my doorbel sound more poppy to me. I agree that it's to polished- they spent 3 weeks in the studio the longest they have on any of
there records. Actually, I'm not quite sure what to make of it yet.

No, she hasn't.  But that's always been the least of the band's problems.

I haven't really cared about a White Stripes album since De-Stijl and this one is no exception.  It's better than post-2000 Modest Mouse but that's really not saying a lot, is it?

The title track is one of the most obnoxious things I've heard in my life.  I honestly think it's as retarded as "Rollin'".

The album being polished, yeah, maybe, I don't care.  Polish is fine, but write some good songs.  Jack White is "enjoying" the guitar?  I suppose he may be, but I'm not enjoying hearing him dick around.

But, you know, rock on.  When the new Interpol drops I'll probably be the only person on here who likes it, so you can get back at me then.

First single is decent, not as good as "Next Exit" or "Slow Hands" but in the same ballpark as "Evil".

apparently, it's a reference to something only British people would understand. but it's "spelled differently" according to Jack White. i have no idea what he's talking about.
i like the name, though. to me, it describes Meg's drumming (i like her drumming: simple/nonexistent though it may be. i dont care what anybody says. it's fine the way it is).

The album is stellar.  I don't like the single as much as I did Blue Orchid off of GBMS but there are songs off this album that have had me from day 1 (of the leak), namely Little Cream Soda, Rag and Bone, and I'm Slowly Turning Into You.  One of the things I like so much about this album is the progression -- it starts off more blues-y and then becomes louder and more garage rock-y.

I'm seeing these guys at MSG from the floor so that's pretty crazy and to be looked forward to, but my buddy has been waiting in line at Irving Plaza since 5:45am this morning to see them there so in the echelons of Stripes fanhood I am but a boy, not yet a man.

Oh and Our Love To Admire is just fine thank-you.  It's so sad to see young people so jealous of Carlos D.'s luxurious 'stache they feel compelled to trash the band.  And the lyrics are at least 50% less retarded than the lyrics on Antics.

It pisses me off because I really, really don't like listening to people jerking off. The four or so minute solo that the title track is just irritates me no end.

For those of you who are still clueless (hello most everyone outside the UK) Icky Thump (or, in its original spelling Ecky Thump) is an ancient and noble martial art that originated in Lancashire and which basically involves hitting people with black puddings.  Or blood sausages if you prefer

Heh. Dirty jokes make me dryly chuckle like the old man I am at heart.

I haven't heard Icky Thump at all yet. It's coming down my internet pipes as we speak and I'm not sure whether or not to be excited. I'm oddly attached to them as they were kind of my 'gateway' band; hearing their debut and De Stijl was the tipping point after which I really started to care about music. Their version of St. James Infirmary Blues ranks among my favourite songs still, and Do still stirs me up a bit inside. They might not be the most technically proficient band ever (even Jack's guitar) but that was what I like/liked about them. They got their point across in a few quick minutes. No guitar solos, overly elaborate bridges, drum fills, any of that. I still like that quality to their earliest records. As time goes on though......it seems to me that they are losing that urgency, the charm (even) that they once had. I barely listened to Get Behind Me Satan.

The low-fi wasn't necessarily the important part of those records to me, so I don't care if Icky Thump is more polished. I'll just be a little disappointed if they try to substitute instrumental wanking for energy and emotion (which is what a few reviews and comments have led me to fear).

Probably shouldn't post this before actually listening to the album....but I am restless and waiting so here, internet. Here you go.

Well, i just finished my first listen through of this and it pains me to say it but i'm alittle dissapointed. it's a good album but compared to all the great stuff they released previously it's a little "meh." On the first listen i caught myself thinking "i'll prolly end up skipping this song when i listen to this album" during several different songs (Prickly Thorn, But Sweetly Worn for example). That's not usually a good sign. Same thing happened to me with Get Behind Me Satan and i still skip past those songs 90% of the time. But i'll have a better idea of the whole album after a couple more plays through.
Icky Thump starts out strong and ends strong and has several good, strong tracks in the middle to hold the whole thing up but on the first listen the weaker tracks might overpower the strong ones so i keep going back and forth about how good this album is.
I think the only reason i was dissapointed initially was because of the article in Guitar magazine (or whatever magazine it was) that said it was supposed to be so much more guitar-driven and all this other stuff. But that's the danger of expectation, I guess.

so far my favorites (in the order they appear on the album) are:
Icky Thump
Conquest
Little Cream Soda
I'm Slowly Turning Into You
A Martyr For My Love For You
Effect & Cause

I think Effect & Cause is my favorite track at this point. But I'm still only on my second play listen through.
Favorite songs anyone? What do you guys like?

The album IS more guitar driven, at least in comparison to Get Behind Me Satan, which was all over the place and not mainly guitar driven.

Anyways, i've been extremley, extremley pleased with Icky Thump.  I've heard alot of people say that it's "just like their other albums" but honestly I find it pretty different.  There's nothing quite like the pop of "You Don't Know What Love Is(You Just Do as You're Told)" on any other Stripes album, and certainly nothing quite as strange as "Prickly Thorn but Sweetly Worn" or the freak out that is "St. Andrew(The Battle is in the Air)".  The cool little weird bits on "Little Cream Soda" are different too, and certainly whatever he's doing to his guitar on the title track isn't quite like anything he's done before.

My favorite tracks though are the ones that hark back to the sound of White Blood Cells like "Bone Broke", and "Rag & Bone".  "Catch Hell Blues" reminds me alot of "Death Letter" from De Stigil and is probably my favorite overall track on the album, and "I'm Slowly Tuning Into You" reminds me alot of "There's No Home For You Here" in a good way.

Like I said, I really, really like the new album.  It's certainly not the BEST White Stripes album, but it's definitley one of my new favorites of the year.  Oh and just as a disclaimier, The White Stripes are in my top 5 favorite bands, so you should probably keep that in mind when thinking about my comments.

JESUS CHRIST PEOPLE

The reference is to Kung Fu Kapers which centers around the Lancastrian martial art of 'Ecky-Thump'. It largely consists of hitting people with Black Puddings. I suspect the ultimate reference though, is to the fact that this episode is notorious because someone died laughing watching it.

I saw Jack White on Jools Holland (A live music show here in the UK) a coupla weeks ago... and he said that it was a reference to the original Lancashire/Yorkshire (Not sure!) saying "Ecky Thump" which is an expression of surprise/shock. He spelt it differently so that people who haven't heard the phrase (He said Americans....but I don't wanna incite any violence here!) would know how to pronounce it. Specifically he said "You know, like how Led Zeppelin took out the A so people wouldn't pronounce it Leed."

Honestly Jack, doing a prog-rock synth solo on a highly derivative single is bad enough.... you don't wanna draw comparisons to Zeppelin... you won't come out of it favourably!

now that i've had a day to digest this album and listen to it a bunch i like it more and more each time. even the songs i was skeptical about at first, i now really enjoy (the two bagpipe songs, for instance).
this album is great. it grew on me quickly.

Also I would like to point out that the combination of Sailor Moon and faux-Kerouac / Sonic Youth spelling is perhaps the purest distillation of what this forum is that we have yet been presented with.

For the record, the entire episode has been uploaded to YouTube, split into three parts. Just search for "Goodies" and "Ecky Thump". I didn't post the links with my earlier comment because, to be honest, if you didn't watch the show as a kid then it really hasn't aged very well. Still, nostalgic chuckles to be had!
