creature: The pygmy seahorse (Hippocampus denise), a recent discovery, is the smallest known seahorse on the planet.
why you should be aware of it: Something this small could easily swim up your nostril and cause a lot of discomfort.

More sea creatures that we should probably be aware of, please. We do like fish!

I think people should be more aware of the Giant Pink Sea Snail, which makes its home in the South Seas, near the drifting Seastar Island. The inside of its shell can safely and comfortably accomodate several people for lengthy voyages, making it rather a lovely alternative to the pricey luxury cruises, which are prone to sinking. It is capable of catching cold, but give it some cough medicine, and it will be fine.

People should also be more aware of the noble and majestic Narwhal! Unicorn of the sea!

You should probably be careful of mermaids. If you're out boating and you have a thing for ladies (sometimes even if you don't), mermaids could call you to your doom. They're pretty, I know, but guh they're evil.

Fact: Transgendered children often collect mermaids and find them fascinating because they lack obvious genitalia.

We can't make this thread about Candiru because they live in freshwater, and this thread is about sea creatures.

Another sea creature you should beware of is Gyarados.

Genetically predisposed to anger, Gyarados are capable of destroying cities with Hyper Beam and there is PRETTY MUCH NOTHING YOU CAN DO. They are just mean motherfucking fish.

There exists evidence, that the Kraken actually exists. In the waters near the near the arctic cirlces, there have been sightings of Cephalopods the size of a 100 feet.

I think that's pretty awesome. Who knows what lurks in the deep?

Whoops, My bad, they're not THAT big, but still pretty darned huge.

You should all probably be aware of Aquaman.
He's normally pretty cool until you mention the fact he's the least useful member of any super hero team.

I would pay to see Aquaman take on a Gyrados, or the Kraken for that matter.

They attack boats.

In lab tests, the Giant Squid, smaller cousin of the Architeuthis Dux (Colossal Squid) has learned to open jars, proving it to be a highly intelligent predater as well. Cephalopods of these large sizes generally have a highly developed nervous system.

I think everyone should know about the coelacanth.

Well, not everyone, just cool people, so that you can feel smart when you know how to pronounce the name and noone else can.

Also, I'm not sure how that photo was taken, considering coelacanth's live several hundred feet underwater.

Other than the one where it's devouring the tongue of whatever it was inside of, they don't look too bad. They kind of remind me of the Garthim (thanks Jimmy) from The Dark Crystal. But yeah, that one pic gives me the heebie jeebies.

The word you are looking for is Garthim.
And I have been known to devour entire fleets. I'm surprised no one has asked me to take care of the Pasha Bunker or whatever it is called.

come on, Newcastle need some sort of tourist attraction, and actually the owners would like to get more than the occasional chunk of wood and metal back (and of cause the obligatory captain's hat - even if the captain wasn't on board it still has to float to the top)

You should be aware that the two halves of a lobster's shell grow independently. They have red, yellow, and blue pigment in their shells.

This lobster is missing the blue pigment on his left side, resulting in the lobster-unfashionable "already cooked" look:

Actually, referring to the "already cooked look," that just generally is something a lot of people don't seem to realize. Live lobsters are not red; they are dark blue, and only turn red when you cook them.

Definitely Dr. Dolittle. None of this Eddie Murphy and Olivia Huxtable crap, either. I prefer good ol' Rex Harrison and lanky Irishmen any day.

As for Aquaman, he still ain't got shit on The Narwhal. Observe!

I am fairly sure that you mean the sea wasp, cubozoa (also known as the box jelly, Carybdea marsupialis). They are the most deadly creature on earth; they have enough venom to kill 60 men. Lifeguards in Australia have supposedly used stockings to protect against these deadly stings, since with even a tiny bit of fabric covering your arm, you are protected.

(I spent finals week reading my school's 11 volume encyclopedia of aquatic life instead of studying.)

Also there are too many imaginary creatures here. I'm disappointed, I had hoped that we could compile a really awesome list of marine life to be aware of. Oh well.

Sea cucumbers defend themselves by vomiting their internal organs at a potential predator, then retreating to go and grow them back.

I imagine this is a pretty effective defense. I know I would be frozen in shock if someone barfed a lung at me, giving them ample time to escape.
