The number of tentacles is not the only difference between an octopus and a squid. In layman's terms, a squid is like a torpedo (complete with jet propulsion) while an octopus is an amorphous blob. Thus, an "octosquid" is a squid with 8 tentacles.

It would have helped if people actually read the 7 sentence article, which stated:

Quote from: UH Researchers To Investigate 'Octosquid'
It has the body of a squid and the tentacles of an octopus.

I didn't read it either. I just saw it on /. a couple days ago browsed the comments for anything funny. I don't think there was.

Jho, the squid also has the JET going on.

Also, allow me to poke fun at biological naming conventions plx.

"It has the body of a squid and the tentacles of an octopus."

I didn't realize that those were two separate links. The first article (which I did read) had nothing in it which would lead to the term "Octosquid".

That's like the muppet version of a crab.

Seriously, in my mind I can see thin metal poles attached to the pincers, and the furry arms are loose and floppy.

I was gonna post that...
But luckily, I had backup.

I, unfortunately, cannot remember where I found that picture, but there were two more along with it.
I present to you...

The Stone Crab!

I know nothing about it.  The JPG was called "Stone Crab".  Who am I to argue?
The closest thing I can find is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_stone_crab
But I don't think they're the same species.

AND!

The Blob Fish!

Somehow I doubt that is the official name.  And yet, again, I was left to rely on the name of the JPG.  I can't find anything similar online.  Haven't searched a lot, but Blob Fish doesn't bring a whole lot up. http://www.minimag.co.za/articles/easyscience_creepsofthedeep.htm but that doesn't really say a whole lot.
Blob Fish looks creepy.

Those, and that previously posted Chimera image, came with no explanation, but I still wish I knew where I snagged them from.

If anyone has any information on either of these two fine, yet creepy, specimen, I'd be interested.

Sorry for the semi necro posting but I saw this little guy and I had to post it.
And we all like fish, right?

http://www.ectomo.com/index.php/2007/10/26/icthyoid-alien/

Its a parasite that attaches to a fishes tongue, and then becomes the tongue.

I'm so glad this thread got necro-posted.

Behold Vampyroteuthis infernalis!  It's not a squid or an octopus, but rather of its own order that split off they think back in the devonian period.  Its essentially the missing link between octopi and squids.  It swims with fins instead of jet propulsion like most cephalopods, and it can shoot a cloud of gooey glow stuff that keeps glowing for 10 minutes to distract predators!

Spotted Eagle Ray

This is the guy that offed Steve Irwin.  It is the most venomous sting-ray in the seas, and it would have killed him even if he had been stung in the foot, because the neurotoxins are that strong.  I get asked this question about every day at work.  (I work at a skates and rays tank in a marine museum.)

@mantis shrimp:  We had caught a mantis shrimp in a trawl net when I was taking a summer class at a marine science consortium, and we kept it and put it in an aquarium.  One of the dumbass boys in the class started tapping at the glass to see what it would do, and it shot out the appendage and smashed the glass of the aquarium.  Scared the hell out of all of us.

@Portugese Man-o-wars: They are technically plankton, because of their inability to swim against the current.  They rely on their sails to catch the wind and move.  I was stung by one off the coast of Bermuda, and I had to spend a week in a Bermuda hospital.  Woo fun vacation!

GOD I love this thread.

Tongue-eating louse

First of all, that's NASTY!

But still, I'm wondering. If "The parasite remains in the place of the tongue and is used by the fish in the same way as its tongue was" then does that mean the fish somehow tastes through the louse? True, the tongue moves the food around while you munch, and people often overlook that, but their primary function is to taste the food. Does the louse replace this function as well? What up wit dat?
