I don't know what this thing is, but if anyone knows that would be awesome. It's like a slimy squid-dog! I think it may be called a chimera, but I'm not sure.

That lecture is way cool! Huzzah! *goes to watch it again*

Also, i believe you mean the Irukandji jellyfish

Actually I did mean that. But it's not actually very fatal at all, so I was mistaken.

That is definitely a painting, look at the paper grain...

Fun fact!
"Lampreys, Hagfish, and "cookie cutter" sharks are all part of the group (or superphylum, but not really formally) agnatha, which contains the jawless fish. They only have teeth around an open mouth, that they can use to spear into a prey, and tear off chunks by writhing about. Lampreys also create copious amounts of slime, which coats their bodies, allowing them to tie a knot with their bodies down by their tail, and wriggle it up to the mouth, using this to push the mouth away from the prey and therefore tear off a hunk. Crazy, huh?"

It could also be a really bad scan, Manda.

The Blue Ringed Octopus is really cute. It is the size of a golf ball and glows with incandescent blue circles when grumpy.

Unfortunately it is also really dangerous. If you are mooching about in the Pacific Ocean and you step on one, you will probably die, either from paralysis from the neurotoxins (you'll stop breathing or your heart will arrest), or from a cuteness overdose because OMG YOU'VE BEEN GOT BY A CUTE LITTLE ADORABLE BLUE RINGED OCTOPUS FUCK OW SHIT.

Ally I am sorry for filling your thread with made-up creatures (and/or lies about real ones), but I kind of saw the picture you posted and thought that's what you were going for. If nothing else, it's a bad photo choice because somehow (photoshop?) the seahorse is at a different resolution than the rest of the fingers and things in the picture, and also looks like it was cut and pasted.

That's okay Katie, you know I will always love you. The seahorse is, in fact, real; I think it looks cut-and-paste because it has a sort of white film around it. It is actually that small, though:

I can't wait to take all this knowledge with me when I start Intro. to Ocean Science next month!

That Blue-Ringed Octopus really is cute, and also reminded me of Zach's comic about them: http://www.animalshaveproblemstoo.com/view.php?id=308

Octopi are REALLY fascinating animals. Try to ignore the lame narrative:

1. They attack sharks.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/09/060906-octopus-video.html

2. The cyanea octopus is a MASTER OF DISGUISE.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/02/070216-octopus-video.html

3. The amel octopus can amputate its tentacles when in danger, in order to escape, and they grow back.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/01/070118-octopus-video.html

4. They can squeeze through tiny spaces.
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2007/01/070116-octopus-video.html
http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/12/061212-octopus-video.html

BONUS! Octoporn!

That narration is terrible enough to be comic! Octopi are so smart, though. My mom watched a tv show about how smart they are and now she is in love with them and will probably someday bring one home.

Also, unfortunately octoporn does not mean the lovechild of an octopus and a unicorn.

Also, whale sharks are so cool.

They are ridiculously big but only eat teeny tiny things (like most whales). Still, you should probably be aware of them because look at how large that mouth is! They are pretty playful though and maybe someday you will make friends with one. It is estimated that their life span is from 70 to 180 years!

The stonefish! It disguises itself, and if you step on it, then its venom can cause severe pain with possible shock, paralysis, and tissue death depending on the depth of the penetration. If you don't get immediate medical attention than it is pretty likely that you will die.

That stonefish is a pretty badass-looking motherfucker. Also, I'm really excited someone brought up whale sharks! I wish one was my bff. I saw a National Geographic video once where one opened its huge mouth and just swam through clouds of fish spawn to eat them.

Lesson summary: Whale sharks have a taste for fish eggs and jizz.

P.S.

This might be my favourite thread.

You should be aware that mantis shrimp have appendages with which they can strike at prey at extremely high speeds.  There are over 400 species of mantis shrimp, roughly classified into two main groups.  "Spearers" have a barbed tip that, as their name indicates, hooks prey.  "Smashers", however, have a club on the end of their appendages, which they can propel at speeds of up to 23m/s (about 50mph) to stun prey and smash open shells.  The sheer speed of the strike also creates a cavitation bubble, which collapses instantaneously, creating a shockwave that can stun or even kill the prey.  Captive mantis shrimp have been known to bust out the glass of their aquariums with a single blow, and encounters with unlucky divers have earned them the nickname of "thumb splitters".

Peacock mantis shrimp.

Mantis shrimp with appendage fully extended.

And speaking of cavitation bubbles, you should also be aware of the pistol shrimp, which uses its claw to fire a stream of bubbles that collapse with such force that they approach the temperature of the sun for a split second.  The resulting shockwave instantly stuns any small prey unlucky enough to be caught in the blast radius, which the pistol shrimp then consumes.

(lifted wholesale from a similar post I made at another site)

Polychaete worms (-chaetae because they’ve got little bristles of chitin called “Chaetae” and –poly because there’s lots of them) are in the phylum Annelida, along with leeches and earthworms. While they’re almost exclusively restricted to marine environments they make up about 8000 of 9000 annelid species and are some of the most abundant marine organisms. Probably the most famous polychaetes are the “tube worms” one sees in just about every documentary that features deep-sea geothermal vents.

Many of the species found around the geothermal vents are also notable as they are capable of surviving constant temperatures of up to 80°C. Tubeworms are filter feeders, using those weird feathery appendages they stick out of their tubes to gather nutrients from the surrounding ocean. Just as notable but not quite as awesome looking are the smaller relatives of the ocean vent tubeworms. It’s these tubeworms that are responsible for the weird bone-like squiggles you see on some rocks from the ocean (just in case you ever wondered).

Also worth mentioning are the sandworms (unfortunately not those of Dune fame). These live in U-shaped burrows in sandy areas such as beaches. The end of the burrow where the sandworm’s tail is located is marked by a big coiled pile of sand, where the worm hass been constantly pooping out sand and waste products. This big sandy coiled turd the worm leaves is due to the sandworm’s method of gaining nutrients. Unlike its pickier tubeworm relatives, the sandworm gets all its food by just swallowing a big mouthful of sand and allowing its digestive system to sort out the nutrients from all the sand.

As well as the stay-at-home tubeworms and lugworms, polychaetes are also represented by some far more mobile groups. These active polychaetes can be herbivores, omnivores, carnivores or quite specific parasites on other sea critters. Quite a few polychaetes can look pretty damn awesome, thanks to those chitin chaetae I mentioned. In some cases the chaetae can get a weird rainbow sheen to them that looks a bit like the rainbow reflections you get off CDs.

Like this “sea mouse”.

Theres a Scared Weird Little Guys song about all the dangerous stuff in Australia that will mess you up.

Including this one.

What they called the "shell that when you pick it up stings you".
It's called a cone shell, and basically uses its little poker bit to stab and poison things. Including you when you pick it up.

This really made me too scared to pick up shells at the beach.

edit: heres the song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeMarRzd28w but it covers more than sea stuff.

All those poisonous and horned creatures are nice and all, but we're missing an entire class of combat.  If I were building an army of said creatures, I would not win any battles as none of them have any ranged melee attacks.

Come on now, guys. We'd get slaughtered before we can get close enough to cross teeth!

...Which is why I'm proposing adding the Pistol Shrimp.. or, for that matter, any other gun-weilding creature to our battalion of global domination.

This guy can project a 100km/h wave of water heated to 9900 Celsius.
Just look at that right claw!

BURN.

edit: so it appears ImRonBurgundy stole my thunder. In my defense, he sited 400 different species and his link was in Japanese, and the only Japanese I remember is "ohgodyes, yes, yes, etc..," or something to that extent.

Deep sea anglerfishes are pretty cool because they are very scary-looking. Nemo's dad got attacked by one when he was trying to read the address on the back of the goggles.

They are ready for anything because they always have a flashlight and really big pointy teeth. The boy fish are, I think, the wierdest fish because they don't really live on their own. They bite the lady fishes and end up fusing into one fish so the boy is just some blood vessels and gonads.

Firstly, those shrimp are fucking insane! I had no idea there were combat-equipped shrimp out there.

Secondly, I think people should be aware that stingrays are actually extremely docile creatures, and they are ONLY dangerous to humans if they feel threatened. Probs Steve took the poor thing by surprise and got a nasty surprise, himself. :(  Sucks for both, because now stingrays have a rep for bein' killers.

Oh man I have to introduce you guys to the coolest thing in the world.
It is called a Black Ghost Knife Fish (awesome name) and it is a tropical fish, you can purchase them for home aquariums, they are between 3-20 inches long. They are nocturnal and also have a weak electrical system, meaning they can't shock you, but when you have a bunch in an aquarium they will sort of line up like a battery.
And they look like this.

They move by undulating that wiggly long fin along the bottom in a sort of snakelike way, oh god they're so cool to watch.
Here is a video of one.
