Nope, just one! Cool eh!

Seaslugs are teh pretty, but the problem is, they kinda tend to be not HUGE, so they are easily overlooked. Which is why you have to be aware of them!

Mkay, if you aren't nuts about our friend here,

The Blue Whale
you obviously don't know enough about him.

They are the fastest creature in the sea, swimming up to forty knots.  It is the largest animal on the planet.  How big, you ask?  Its heart is roughly the size and weight of a Volkswagon.  Some of its veins are so large around that a child would be able to swim in them.  Its tail is the span of a small plane.
I think the most amazing thing about the blue whale, is that, despite its size and power, the blue whale eats tiny little organisms and is extremely peaceful.
AWESOME.

They aren't from the sea. They are freshwater fish, if my memory serves me.

But we've already had a few in here that are freshwater.  For example, the black ghost knife I had for seven years in a freshwater tank, so I don't think that it's saltwater.

I feel that you should all be made aware of the brittle star.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittle_star
while it is often called a starfish it is not, being simply a closely related echinoderm. This in no way prevents it from being awesome as some species can, unlike other echinoderms, tolerate brackish water.

I remember learning in grade school that most whales eat plankton, and that bummed me out because it meant that Pinocchio couldn't possibly be real, because there's no way a real whale could have swallowed them. The fact that it was a cartoon, wherein a wooden marionette turns into a donkey, and eventually a real boy, never crossed my mind.

edit: so it appears ImRonBurgundy stole my thunder. In my defense, he sited 400 different species and his link was in Japanese, and the only Japanese I remember is "ohgodyes, yes, yes, etc..," or something to that extent.

The video itself is in English, though.

And, Orbert, you should be aware that Monstro the whale appears to be a highly stylized rendition of a sperm whale (albeit with a much shorter snout and an inaccurately striped belly), which are in fact carnivorous.

They live in the Amazon River, so yes, they are freshwater. Link! And enough about the creepy fish that swim into unpleasant places...

Speaking of whales, humpbacks are pretty awesome. Mostly because the males will sing for about 10-20 minutes and then repeat it for hours. And they only eat during the summer, so in winter when they give birth, they're living off fat reserves. And they eat krill and small fish, like the blue whales.

Noooo, they be big, bulky and blooo! They arent the fastest! Way to unstreamlined! Thats like saying a TRUCK is the FASTEST CAR IN THE WORLD! IT DOESNT WORK THAT WAY! (though, ofcourse 40knts is pretty fast compared to what you and I can make)

Meet mr. Speediest fish in the world, Istiophorus platypterus, or Sailfish with a speed of 68.18 mph

My personal favourite cetaceans are still Narwhals and Beluga Whales! All varieties of whale are really very amazing, though. I've always wanted to go whale watching.  :-(

I just love their dear little faces! Belugas are also known as Sea Canaries, because of all the singing and chattering they do, and it can even be heard above the water. They can travel into brackish water to hunt, and generally give birth in estuaries.

Beluga's closest relative, Narwhal (again)!

Another fun fact! Beluga calves are not white...they are only white as adults. The calves are usually bluish or brownish grey...

You should be aware of them because they are FUCKING ADORABLE.

Pink dolphins.

They're an endangered species that lives in the waters of the Southeast Asian Sea.  They're very much in need of help.  My girl scout troop back there "adopted a dolphin" or sponsored its life with charity.  Its name was Stumpy because it was missing a dorsal fin and would list from side to side.  He ended up on the troop patch.
They also have grey calves.  AWESOME.

Oh wait, and they're pink.

The Baiji (Yangtze River Dolphin)

It may or may not be extinct. No living specimen has been witnessed in over 5 years. This is almost entirely due to unregulated fishing on the river.

Sea creatures that look like they're smiling are way cool. How can you look at a picture of a dolphin and not smile? They look so happy. I know it's just the shape of their mouths, and they'd probably keep on smiling while poking you to death with their snouts for stealing their fish, but smiling animals are just too cool.

Look guys, it's the Spotted Garden Eel (Heteroconger hassi).

It grows to 60cm long and sticks two thirds of his body out of the ground when it wants to eat zooplankton (no idea what a zooplankton is) .

And this is the Large-tooth Cookie-cutter Shark (Isistius plutodus)

Last picture is of a 363 mm long Large-tooth Cookie-cutter Shark.

It grows to 50cm long, and has a row of 19 huge teeth (proportionately the largest of any shark species) in the lower jaw.

Zooplankton are basically the little animal plankton, as opposed to Phytoplankton, which are the little plant plankton. I'm sure its much more complicated, but this is the extent of my learnin's.

Yeah, zooplankton is things like krill and a whole bunch of larvae, like jellies, crustaceans, sponges, corals, etc etc. Phytoplankton is largely algaes.

Ok, there are two sharks which are awesome in this hemisphere (three if I pay the whale shark, simply because it's huuuge).

1. Wobbegong: The wobbegong pretends to be a carpet. Biggest I've seen was a little over a metre. Don't poke it?

2. Port Jackson Shark: The Port Jackson is universally considered the prettiest shark in the world. FACT. I think they tend to be about two feet long. Two feet of cuuute.

Portugese Man O' War.
Scary on so many levels, it isn't even one animal, it's a gang of smaller animals who have teamed together to ruin your oceanic experience.
You're not even safe on the beach as detatched tentacles can still sting you, sting you goooood.
But the real fear of this animal is the ever present chance that all of them will one day join together to form a colossal stinging monster of infinite malice.

Here is an artist's rendering of what such a creature would look like as it destroys humanity

Like this, you mean?

This kind of colony-forming polyp creature is called a siphonophore. The Man-o'-War has a siphon! (It's closest relative, the chondrophore, doesn't.) Loggerheads eat them!

Saw that on the news this morning. Where the heck are they getting the word "Octosquid"? The octopus has eight tentacles, hence the name. Squid have 10. They're all cephapods, but different families. Or maybe orders. I'm not sure where the split is.
