Oh great. The chipmunks will be "cool" and homey and in da hood and all that. They'll be cynical, make bad pop-culture references, and use mild profanity, because that's always funny, right? Yeah, right.

See, now I've just got this idea of the Chipmunks film as a parody of young middle-class wannabe "gangsta's" where our sympathies lie with the long-suffering father figure as he has to deal with expletive-abusing, designer-wearing, commodity-obsessed charges.  But that might go a bit over the head of the intended audience.

That wouldn't be a problem if Alvin and The Chipmunks weren't already established characters who aren't at all like that. I still wouldn't watch the movie, but at least I wouldn't have a problem with it.

I'm not saying that Hollywood can't update the characters for the modern audience, but the original chipmunks were not "cool". They were rodents, for shit's sake. They had an innocent charm about them, and while not always the brightest guys around, they meant well and were fun. Just looking at that picture, I don't get the impression that these guys are going to be happy fun little chipmunks.

Jeeeeeeeeeez.

God this movie will stink though. Unless they do Straight Outta Compton, with no censorship. Although one way or another I don't think these new hip chipmunks could be anymore annoying than they were originally anyway.

No, what I'm saying is that they can update characters, but there's a difference between updating something and changing its basic nature.

I expect that by the end of this film Alvin would have slept with all three of the Chipettes and punched at least one of them in the eye for disrespectin' him, Simon will have set up a meth lab in his room and Theodore... I dunno. He'll probably end up going goth or something equally inane.

So, after enjoying a film at my local moviehouse, I walk out with my man... and my jaw drops at the poster. I was literally frozen in place for a while.

I'll have to see it, of course, but I'll be sitting in the back row with the aforementioned man, just in case.

Hey, at least they are sticking SOMEWHAT to the original cartoon !

I cried more the day I saw the Underdog (another movie Jason Lee was in) trailer.  I mean, come on... a REAL frikking dog with a CG mouth ?  That is nothing like the original cartoon, and none of the humour was translatable to a quadruped dog.

Why is Jason Lee suddenly going for such horribly written CG Fests ?  His humour works so much better in a more real world (a la My Name is Earl).

Did he just need more of a paycheck between filming Season 2 and 3 of Earl ?

Just for the f*** of it, I watched the trailer On Demand.

They were in their normal clothes (long shirts, like they were in the cartoons).

And they had the original voices.  (I used to be obsessed with the show in the '80s.  Hey, I was eight when it was on.)

I don't want to see it (at least not yet--I may secretly watch it when it comes out on cable) but at least they're not gangsta.

BTW, I recently listened to a Chipmunk-ized version of Weezer's "Say It Ain't So" and it was actually pretty cool (it made me grin, anyway).  It was really a speeded-up version of the original song, but I was totally imagining Alvin rocking out.  ...Maybe Simon?  Simon's the Rivers Cuomo of the group, I think.

I think I have the Chipmunks "Rock 'n' Roll" album somewhere. It has songs like Faith, Walk Like an Egyptian and La Bumba on it. It isn't bad actually. And they aren't speeded up either, it's the actual songs with the chipmunk voice actors singing the songs.

No. But I do realise that the original Chipmunk actors are some dudes with their voices pitch corrected. If they were sped up it wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Well I went and saw it last night (my friend's girlfriend wanted to see it and he tricked me into going so he wouldn't have to do it alone).  It's not the original voice actors, it's Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, and some other guy.  It's not something I'd watch again, but I guess if you have kids or a girlfriend who likes anthropomorphism, it's not terrible.  The plot was basically about how the music industry fucks child musicians over.  And it had a couple good laughs.

Dude, you think they had advanced pitch correction back in the early sixties?

Their voices were totally sped up. They sang to slowed-down tracks.
