I've been listening to it to and from work, he was hyping it up about having a lot more guitar solos, which I'm not really seeing a lot of. The songs are interesting, it's good music to just relax to.

I understand where people are coming from when they say they don't like the white stripes, when I first listened to Elephant I hated it, 3 years later I pick it out of my cd rack and stick it in, then I'm like "holy sh*t this is good stuff"

I used to like them and now I don't because it's boring.

They'd be a lot better if there was something to listen to other than the guitar work.  Meg is a horrible, horrible drummer.  If there was a semblance of rhythm in any of their songs, maybe it'd be more entertaining.

I guess I don't like music I can't bob my head too anymore.  Energyless music doesn't do it for me.

This is wrong. Meg's drumming makes The White Stripes just as much as Jack's guitar playing. It is meant to be minimalistic.

You're telling me you can't bob your head to Icky Thump (the song)?

minimalist drumming was cool when the Jesus and Mary Chain did it

mostly because they realized a drum machine did it better a couple albums in

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

Meg White has nothing on Georgia Hubley as far as being minimalist.  Georgia is being minimalist as a choice and because she has awesome timing.  Meg is just... amateurish.

But who cares, that's not why the album sucks.  It's all Jack White's fault.  I can't believe how bad his lyrics have gotten.  And the guitar work is just so... wankish.

Really De-Stijl is the only album of theirs I would even remotely care about owning.  In fact it is the only one I've owned.  And I sold it after a year or so.

But I admit "You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)" is still a great pop song.

I'm trying to decide just how pretentious "Well Americans want nothing better to do/Why don't you kick yourself out- you're an immigrant too/Who's using who?/What should we do?/Well you can't be a pimp and a prostitute too." is as a lyric.

Pretty fucking pretentious in my book.

That lyric is as almost as bad as "If I were dead, would my records sell?" being sung by someone who has made million-selling albums.

I saw them last night (in Yellowknife), and thoroughly enjoyed everything they played. I know they're "simplistic" to many people but it's entertaining nonetheless.

All I have to say to people who love the White Stripes is this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgpOV-wc9i8

And that's not even nearly their best song.  But they don't have a video for "Hitched".

The guitar isn't even awesome wanking. Perhaps Jack White should ask Tony Iommi for a guest appearance because that guy knows how to make guitarwank interesting.

Got bored about a minute in.

Say what you want about the White Stripes, but when I hear a song of theirs, whether I know it or not, I know it's them. They have a distinct sound, and they have a lot of fun. That's two of my fav things in bands.

The Kills are not that awesome and they are hardly a replacement for the Stripes.

The new record is no Elephant or De Stijl but I think it's better than anything the Kills have ever recorded in my book.

Is your namesake Mr. J. G. Ballard, or are you actually named Ballard?

Part J. G. Ballard, part "dude that sounds like a cool screen name"

Man, The Kills sound a lot more like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club than The White Stripes.

I'm going with the comment she just seems amateurish.

And no, I can't bob my head to Icky Thump.  The rhythm changes at awkward times, and the drums don't seem to follow when Jack mixes stuff up.  The little "blubbatyblittle" sounds that start popping up about halfway in the song are also incredibly awkward, especially if they were really going for a "minimalist" music sound.

I'm still rocking out bigtime to Era Vulgaris as an album.

I love the new album.

I have been waiting for this, and it hasn't dissapointed me.

And just mentioning Meg's drumming, its different, because its not so polished...I think so anyway.

What the hell, this thread?

Meg is a horrible, horrible drummer.  If there was a semblance of rhythm in any of their songs, maybe it'd be more entertaining.

Have you even got as far as "Rag And Bone" on the new record?

Meg White has nothing on Georgia Hubley as far as being minimalist.  Georgia is being minimalist as a choice and because she has awesome timing.  Meg is just... amateurish.

But I admit "You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl)" is still a great pop song.

I actually can't believe the entirety of this post. White Blood Cells is an awesome album too and though their next two records started to get a bit crowded they aren't bad albums by any means. As far as the amateurish argument goes, some people find it endearing. I find it endearing. It might make you not like it but it certainly doesn't make it objectively bad, dig?

Tony Iommi for a guest appearance because that guy knows how to make guitarwank interesting.

Oh man Iommi doesn't wank he just kicks ass.

The Kills are not that awesome

You have no idea how hard I'm frowning at my computer screen right now.

EDIT: I did some fact-checking. I didn't have liners or anything when I was listening to the new album so I got one song title wrong.

I sat down and really gave No Wow a good listen, and in retrospect I have to apologize for things said in the heat of the moment  :-P.

However, who in their right mind would suggest listening to the Kills as a substitute for the Stripes, or vice versa?  They are really not that similar.

I'd call Icky Thump their third best album behind Blood Cells and Elephant.

It's incredibly pretentious, but fortunately, pretention suits them well.

I finally got the album yesterday (I put it off for fear of disappointment).  Though I was slightly disappointed, it's a strong album with several very well-constructed songs--"Rag and Bone," "Little Cream Soda," and "Conquest" are downright catchy.

It's not De Stijl or White Blood Cells, but I think we may just have to accept that Jack White's golden years are over, just as we accept that Paul McCartney will never write another "Yesterday."

Why is everybody complaining Jack White is pretentious?  Of course he's pretentious.  So were the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Prince, Patti Smith, Elvis Costello, Neil Young, Jimi Hendrix, and most of the best rock acts of all time.  (No, I'm not comparing them.  I'm just saying, pretention isn't a negative quality for rock musicians).

Yeah, the lyrics on his new album suck.  I don't mind that there aren't consistent rythyms in their songs because usually the guitar is just so good.

Conquest I find particularly hilarious, lyric-wise.

Icky Thump is a good album, but I think WBC and Elephant are among the few best of the decade.

Pretension is a bad thing in this case because Jack White admits his overbearing homosexuality to the garage rock scene.

Pretentiousness dates back to the Classical age.

Mozart?  Beethoven?  Hayden?  Some of the most conceded musicians of all time!

Beethoven died, but he never conceded.

Reminds me of a really old, really bad joke.

Guy goes to visit Beethoven's grave and hears the slightest, faintest touch of music.  Goes back the next day and it's slightly louder.  The next day, and finally he realizes what it is -- it's the Seventh being played backward.  So he tracks down the cemetary groundskeeper and says "I discovered the most amazing thing, if you visit Beethoven's grave three days in a row you can hear the Seventh being played backward!"  Groundskeeper looks at the guy with a mixture of amusement and contempt.  "That's just Beethoven decomposing," he says.
