Concert decision help
« on: 20 Jul 2007, 16:43 »

Well, a week from now I'll be in Guelph, rocking out at Hillside, my favorite concert all year. I am presented with a problem, though, with the lineup.
Friday night is a fairly easy choice, but Saturday puts me at a loss for what to do. Closing the night at the same time on different stages, there are The Dears, Shout Out Out Out Out, and Immaculate Machine, all of whom I wanted to see when I saw the initial bill. Does anyone have any thoughts?
I'm kind of underwhelmed by the Dears' 'No Cities Left', though their newer album sounds better, and if someone says they're great live I may check them out.
Shout Out Out Out Out I've still not actually heard, but I hear good things and the 'electronic tent' was pretty awesome last year, and I wouldn't mind that kind of tight dance party hiding from the rain with electronic music in the park again. But does their music translate to live stuff well?
Immaculate Machine, meanwhile, sound like some energetic pop rock that's going somewhere and I'd like to check them out as well.
So basically I am at an impasse here. Does anyone have insight?

Shout Out Out Out Out are among the best live shows you will ever see, hands down.

There are six members in the band, two of whom are always drumming. The other four switch between bass and synths and vocoder. It is pure partying.

I have heard the same.  I saw the Dears at a free show last year & while they were good,  their live show really didn't leave a lasting impression on me.  I would say they lacked energy, which to me is essential to a great show.  Have fun either way

Shout Out Out Out Out was the way I was leaning already, so I guess they're winning right now. Anybody know anything about Immaculate Machine?

Well, the problem is Immaculate Machine are really great too. Not only have they put out two phenomenal records, the keyboardist/singer, who I think is named Kathryn Caldor, sings with the New Pornographers because she's A.C. Newman's niece. Apparently they're also quite awesome live.

But I'd still say Shout Out Out Out Out.

I've only heard a few songs of theirs, which I've liked, but that's how I feel on the New Pornographers; a few good songs, but on the whole, just kind of boring. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case with Immaculate Machine live, because the New Pornographers are decent live.

P.S. It looks like Immaculate Machine is playing in my town the week after Hillside, so I'll definitely not go to them at the festival and maybe catch them for $7 on Thursday.

I could also use a little concert decision advice.  In this case, concert ticket purchase.

After a summer of finding practically nothing I wanted to go to, like five concerts I was interested in went on sale at practically the whole time.  I'd like to see each of them, but don't want to spend the money to go to all five.

The five are Spoon, The New Pornographers, Rilo Kiley, Of Montreal, and The National.

I've seen TNP and Of Montreal.  So I know what I'd be in for with them.  Does anybody have advice about whether the others are good live acts?

Right now I was thinking buy tickets to Spoon, TNP, and The National, and play the other two by ear as they get closer.  But I also heard at one point TNP were considering having other people sing Neko Case and Dan Bejar's parts if they had trouble booking concerts having to take their schedules into account, so I have to make sure they'll both be there.

(I'm also seeing Nickel Creek with Fiona Apple in a couple weeks).

don't see the new porn, they're good but not that amazing that you ought to sea them agian,.
I'd say Rilo Kiley sounds awful fun for sure. I'd say don't see sumnmin yuou seen before, just a waste a time you could be spending seein the new guys. Spoon is cool, but really kind of big. I never even hear of the natiional, so go see rilo kely.

I'll let this slide if you haven't heard "Fire In The Lobby" yet.
