Broken Social Scene Presents: Spirit If...
« on: 26 Jul 2007, 23:40 »

So, Kevin Drew's solo album was leaked some days ago. Has anyone heard it?

Liked it?

I think it's pretty good. Broke me up, Gangbang Suicide and Frightening Lives are specially noteworthy/awesome.

Just askin'.

What does it sound like?  I've been a long time fan of Broken Social Scene, so I'm probably inclined to like it.

Oh, cool, it's a member of BSS. I saw this the other day and wondered what was up with the 'Presents' bit, I thought they were just being pompous asses and going WE LIKE THIS BAND SO YOU SHOULD TOO. Kinda like a sponsorship, but the indie version.

Gon' go check it out now  8-)

Well, I guess I answered my own question - there's a video on the label site.  Sounds pretty cool.

It's pretty good, it's a lot like what I would expect to happen if Kevin Drew released a solo album (which is basically BSS with fewer people). Nothing that rocked my world on the first listen, but pretty solid. I am excited to see more of the BSS presents... series.

It's good. It sounds pretty BSSish to me though. I mean there's obviously less people involved but it's in no way just Kevin Drew. The BSS sound is certainly there and I don't see how any fan could be disappointed by this album.

Kevin Drew was actually one of the two founders of BSS - he worked on Feel Good Lost when it was just 2 people before they added people to play live.

And 7 posts with no link yet? For shame. Help me out, here!

Am I the only person who is a little confused about this being a solo album? It sounds a lot like BSS and a lot of the songs involve many instruments- guitars, bass, drums, brass, strings, multiple vocals ect. The thing is, this could be a BSS album, albeit one with a slightly stripped down ensemble. I don't see why Kevin Drew had to "go solo" to make this album. Of course, it's still really excellent and, to be fair, some of the songs do seem to involve only a couple people. Still, it's something I don't quite get.

well i've always seen BSS as a predominantly instrumental band... post rock like, and there vocals are you usually turned down, especially since there post YFIIP days. On this record Kevin Drew is the focus. However I do consider it a BSS record and there best one since YFIIP.

Will BSS ever make an album with everyone in the band again?  I mean, I have yet to see them do something not awesome, but when it was a band of like 15 (I'm not sure the exact number) people it was just amazing.

That said I have not heard the new album, I'll probably just wait for it to be released, and then further my college kid poverty and buy it.

The band's on hiatus and I don't even believe that Kevin Drew knows to what extent it will reform.  But I always thought that the lineup was always fluctuating with "members" (especially the female vocalists) drifting in and out song by song and album by album.  See esp.  Emily Haines, Leslie Feist.

That beign said, having seen the way the two act around eachother, chances that Drew and Feist are going to work on a project together are hovering around 105% with a 50% chance that the album will involve the words "love" and "songs".
