Full disclosure: I DO actually like the original American Idiot.

But this version is just way too much fun. You sound like my friends, if my friends were more talented, and cooler. AND I LOVE MY FRIENDS THE END.

Oh man, that song is PAINFUL. I remember it being extremely popular back in 1999 or something.

You, sir, have hoe-downed the un-hoe-downable.

I am currently picturing Billy Joe and Gerard Way wearing cowboy outfits and dancing in circles locked at the arm like husband and wife.  Peter Wentz is playing the harmonica, and tons of scene kids are standing around the edges clapping and stamping their cowboy boots (plus spurs) to the beat.  Take the sheer improbability of that ever happening, and that's how much happier I am for hearing that song.

No. You were correct. Journey really did suck.

I know their old sound guy. He still has nightmares. He'll wake up in the middle of the night screaming "OH GOD THEY STILL SOUND HORRIBLE I AM SO FIRED." Nearly got him evicted a few times.

I can't tell if I like your American Idiot or Tubthumping more.

Although, the harmonica in Tubthumping is nicely done.

"Welcome Home" by Coheed & Cambira.

These are the worst lyrics I have ever forced myself to sing.

Never had to cover Dragonforce, eh?  (Yeah, I know... I'm sorry, I was stretched trying to think of something more silly so I played the DF card.)

And yes, I know I'm coming in a little late, but gimme a break.

Come to think of it, cover Body Breakdown or My Spirit Will Go On by Dragonforce and I'll be amazed, impressed, and infinately amused.

I can infer from the fact that you totally ignored the Dragonforce challenges that I'm not likely to hear any crazy acoustic Herman Li riffs.

btw, Johnny, I managed to listen to a few of your tracks through Myspace etc. and I'm pretty impressed.  Nice work, keep it up.

I was reading a lot and debating on whether or not I wanted to join. This thread and the songs pushed me to do it.

On the Journey note: Who can't love the foot-tapping, pump your fist, power-ballad that's better known as "Don't Stop Believing"?
Aside from that, I can't enjoy any Journey. They suck.

Through the Glass - Stone Sour
I had a hard time not pulling into oncoming traffic every time this came on the radio (I don't have a Cd player or cassette deck.)

Or any Hoobastank hit. Pick your poison, but personally I'd love to hear "The Reason."

Huge announcement.

I have to come up with something to do with my guitar for a class in which we're learning guitar. The problem is that I already know how to play the damn thing. After a lot of thinking I've decided that I am going to take the premise of this thread and expand it out to one album - preferably one bad album - which I will then attempt to cover in its entirety.

I am taking suggestions for records starting now. Please submit all suggestions as PMs so that I won't have anyone influencing the decision except myself. The winning record will be announced in this thread, which will be updated more frequently as a result.

I'm gonna nominate Dragonforce again, because the lyrics make it quite possibly the silliest stuff on the planet...

and mostly because I wanna hear Johnny C suffer through covering them... yup, I'm a dick.

Does this mean we need to PM things we already wrote here? Or will you write that down in a list and throw it in to what ever else you get in PM?

No.

I mean, what your job is right now is to take an album that is terrible and PM it to me. I will select the album which is the best candidate and then cover it in its entirety.

To be clear, I already have ideas for three records, two of which were actually pretty good the first time. I just want to make sure I've chosen the best candidate for this.

The problem is picking an album that sucks but not so bad that it might be painful to cover.  I was gonna suggest Nickelback or Creed, but I don't think you'd enjoy doing covers of anything either band has done.  So something that doesn't suck really bad?  Just mostly sucky? Five Dolla?

"The Scientist" by Coldplay.

Get them here.

I like your version, but it sounds the exact same as an acoustic version of Coldplay doing it I got my hands on, bar a little guitar work at the end. Sorry....

    • I AM A WHORE FOR MY OWN MUSIC

Here is my project proposal in its entirety.

Quote
I plan to arrange and record a number of AM radio songs - colloquially known as "yacht rock" - in a style that I find interesting. The learning materials I require are largely the songs themselves, which I will then attempt to re-interpret. Documentation will come through recorded songs, performance and a weblog which I will update whenever I record a new song. I aim to record one song every two weeks. This is enough material for a short live set and certainly enough to draw from in the future.

The challenges I might face are personal attachments to the song, time commitment and feelings of being restricted. I'm not as concerned about the latter two, because if I set a deadline for songs I'm likely to complete them and if I feel restricted by the guitar I can always touch up the recording with another instrument, vocal overdubs or other additional lines, though I'm going to make sure it remains guitar-centric. Having a personal attachment to the song, however, is another problem entirely; after all, nobody wants to fix something they don't think is broken. I'll try to pick songs based on a theme, genre or artist that I am less fond of so that I won't be afraid of drastically altering them.

The first song is going to be either "Ride Like The Wind" by Christopher Cross or "What A Fool Believes" by the Doobie Brothers.

Suggestions would be appreciated.

Chocolate Rain. I am actually thinking of doing this one myself on electric guitar.

There is also the option of "Whiskey Lullaby" because I don't like Brad Paisley and I especially hate Allison Krauss. But it is such a good song! If you were to do it in a different key (I am not certain of your vocal range but you seem to like it higher than Paisley) I am sure you could put out a pretty excellent version of this.

Sorry, maybe I should have made the criteria a bit clearer. I'm aiming for the 70's and 80's style exemplified by the bands in the Yacht Rock series. See: America, Steely Dan, and to an extent Fleetwood Mac. The goal is smooth, commercial music that I'm going to try and give a soul to.

AND COULD BE MADE BETTER, HINT HINT JOHNNY

You want commercial music that lacks feeling? Try anything by the Scorpions. I could also suggest some of Elton John's weaker songs. If you want to venture out past the two decade span you've provided, I would LOVE to hear some Ace of Base up in there.
