freeware indie games
« on: 05 Aug 2007, 23:20 »

i don't think anyone brought up this topic before.

since my PS2 is on it's death bed and my PC is a minimum-spec system by today's standards, i've to resort to freewares for my daily dose of gaming. i've always been a sucker for adventure games and titles like 5 days a stranger, ben jordan and missing (to name a few) not only provide fun but also put me in a nostalgic moment, reminiscing about the good old days of monkey island, police/king/space quest and prince of persia. although done in a limited budget, some of these titles are of high quality (e.g. facade, penumbra, a tale of two kingdoms).

does anyone else here share this interest? if so, what games have you played?

CAVEEEEEEEEEEEE STORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Besides that the Independent Gaming Source is a pretty nice little blog about indie gaming. It'll turn you on to alot of games you'd otherwise not know about.

CAve Story is definitely a great game and I'm gonna list a couple of sites. Indie may not be applicaple in all cases, but free defiitely is.

http://www.agdinteractive.com/ - They've remade the first 2 King's Quest games to great success, and are currently alpha testing a remake of Quest for Glory 2. They also have a retail game called "Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine" which is a great adventure title.

http://www.agdinteractive.com/ - Abandonware site made of pure win. With a slightly shitty search engine.

SOLDAT.  Side scrolling 2D shooter.  So many guns.  Ragdoll physics, action packed.  It's insane.

seconded. i was definitely going to suggest this. you can sort games by genre, and year. and there's a lot of games that we grew up playing, on there, that we might miss dearly. I got Colonization from there, and damn do I love that game.

despite the shitty site layout, it is pretty much incredible.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to mention Orbiter, which does for space what Flight Simulator did for air. It's definitely a simulator, and not a game, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the solar system is available from the get-go, but it should be noted that user-made mods for it infinitely increase the value of the game, most found through the related sites link. In particular, nab some high-res textures (video card compliant, of course), Delta Glider IV and the Sound Mod from Dan's Orbiter Page, the latter two which are absolutely essential to having fun.

And if you played too hard it'd flop out and dangle around by the wire and that is just super ugly

since i see some abandonware sites here, i'd think it's ok to post abandonwarering, it links to lots of great sites, one among them xtc abandonware.

then there's actual freeware games like(i'd have to admit, i got most of the links from another forum i'm on, description is mine though):

frets on fire(guitar hero clone, only you use your keyboard)

trackmania(racing game)

F.E.A.R. combat(fear, online, free)

generally(mico machines like)

neverball(like super monkey ball? you'll like this)

penumbra(horror game, plenty of puzzles, no weapons)

little fighter 2(like the name suggests, fighting game, has got lots of different modes)

gta 1,2, and wild metalmost likely, gta 1 and 2 are well known, in wild metal you control a tank, i think you can imagine what you have to do with it

black shades(you're a bodyguard with psychic powers, killing zombies, and various kinds of assasins, graphics look like the original starfox)

warzone 2100 RTS game, futuristic setting

ground control(also a futuristic rts, pure combat)

crack attack(basically a stripped down version of tetris attack)

tribes(futuristic shooter, huge pretty open maps, jetpack, enjoy)

gunbound(bit like worms, online play)

clonk planet(worms/rts crossover)

narbacular drop(bit like the game "portals")

torus trooper(very fun low tech graphics, very high speed, techno music, you're a space ship, see how long you last)

tremulous(team based scifi shooter, also has you build stuff for upgrades)

scorched 3d(alot like worms 3d, you use tanks though, and need fuel to move)

line rider(like excitebike, only you make the map)

return to castle wolfenstein: enemy territory(online shooter, team based)

cortex command(you are a brain in a jar who has the ability to control robots)

warrock(like a free battlefield 2)

cube(shooter not unlike quake 2)

cube 2(sequal to the above)

abuse(awesome side scroller)

doom legacy(like the name suggests, doom, i prefer to use programs like Jdoom to achieve something of the same effect though)

super mario 3:mario forever(mario world 3 clone)

tux racer(yay! im a pengiun, and im faster then you!)

americas army(online shooter, you die quickly, well, depending on how good you are, but bullets are FATAL in this game)

alien arena(scifi shooter)

savage(real time strategy shooter, wanna know what that is? play the game)

warsow(fun quake like game, with cartoonesque graphics)

nexuiz(fast paced online shooter)

vivid conceptions(side scrolling platformer)

phosphor(browser based online shooter)

GlTron(remember the bike scenes in TRON? this is it)

worms wars(you're a worm army, fighting for garden supremacy, top down view)

elder scrolls: arena(come on, you must know this game, for the heathens that don't. think
ultima)

edit:

oh, how could i have forgotten plasma pong?
it's a pong close, accept you shoot jets, and can suck the ball up, looks great, very fun sandbox mode.

edit:
oh, and as you said adventures, try white chamber, http://www.gamershell.com/news/28602.html
unfortunately, i couldn't find their own site, but i know it,s there, been there.
adventure, anime looks, pretty futuristic, i admit, i haven't played much of it, since the anime style threw me off, but what i played was nice

I never could get into Ground Control.  I only played  a little bit of it, but the controls were kind of confusing, and it was kind of boring.
