a theory on coldplay.
« on: 11 Aug 2007, 01:08 »

So I saw the Shins at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney last night. They were great, but that's not exactly what this thread is about. I thought during their set that "hey, these guys should be bigger than Coldplay"... and then I thought, hey, there was a time when Coldplay actually had a similar(ish) sound. Well, in one song, at least: Don't Panic.

So my theory is that Coldplay could have been quite awesomely Shins-like at one point, but then when Yellow blew up, they let their U2 obsessions run free, and everything was ruined forever, as the t-shirt says.

or to put it another way: The Shins are what Coldplay should have turned into, but didn't.

thoughts/ridicule?

I don't like the Shins, either.

Coldplay doesn't sound like U2.

I prescribe some Miles Davis. Take twice a day after eating.

Also, between the Ska threads, Coldplay threads and numerous Spice Girls threads I would reiterate that the search function has a purpose. It's all well and good to have threads about shitty music too but we don't need more than one on each band. We had a Coldplay thread last week for example.

I only have Bitches' Brew... and can only listen to it at night. I fear my skull might collapse in on itself if I listen to that record whilst the sun is shining.

er. I didn't realise that there had been another Coldplay thread, for which I apologise.

Just wanted to share a half-arsed theory. I admit it's lame, that's why I tried it out on all you people on the internets. Y'know, 'cos you're not real.

Comparing Coldplay to The Shins is supposedly possible, in some ways, but only simply due to sounding similar in their suckiness.

Quoted for Truth.

I wish Coldplay/U2/Snow Patrol/one of those big, crappy bands would put out something totally strange. If U2 put out a fusion jazz/drone doom/super wanky prog record or whatever I would have a lot more respect for them. I mean, come on, you've already earned millions of dollars and played arenas everywhere, so why not alienate your fan base? It's not like they've got anything else to do.

Kind of Blue is over-rated. Get 'Round About Midnight.

I think my favorite thing abuot Kind of Blue is the version New York Voices do of it.

Still, its a classy fucking album, but I dont know shit about hell of Miles Davies work to compare it to anything else he's ever done. The version of Birth of the Cool I have sounds like it was recorded in a whales dick.

You may have a point. Except I give less of a shit about The Shins than I do about Coldplay.
