The "Rip Me for my Taste in Music" Thread
« on: 14 Aug 2007, 01:25 »

Because it's funny, and we're all friends here anyway, aren't we?

Stuff I Like, Unapologetically
Coldplay (how's that for starting off with a homer?)
U2 (We're running now!)
Billy Joel (OH YES)
Counting Crows
Radiohead
Conquistador (the 7-piece rock-ska band The Bravery used to be before they were The Bravery)
Angels and Airwaves (what happens when Tom Longe locks himself in a basement for a year and listens only to U2?  THIS HAPPENS.)
Athlete
Barenaked Ladies
British Sea Power
Calexico
The Decemberists
Green Day
Guster
Ian Axel
The Killers
Muse
Pearl Jam
The Postal Service
Rooney
Stars
Stars of Track and Field
Toad the Wet Sprocket
The Virginia Coalition
The Who

This is a small fragment of my music collection, pulled from my desktop which only has a couple of things that I happened to import to it.  Everything else lives on my eMac/700 music server which is currently taking a nap.

DO YOUR WORST, BITCHES

BTW, in case I didn't make this clear, the idea was that everybody posts something they think others will go "OH GOD VOMIT" at, as well as some things they think they might think others will be like "HEY MAN AWSUM," to see if reactions to either are surprising at all.

ummm. Hot Hot Heat might be worth ripping on, I guess....aaand Ok Go. Maybe.

I think there is absolutely no reason to be sorry for liking Toad the Wet Sprocket. I actually have no desire to rip on you for any of that list. Not that I don't wanna barf on half of that stuff, but they're your ears, man.

Edit: Okay, I wanna barf on 3/4 of it, at least. Still... your ears.

He's a clever, one, he is.  He's giving us too much.  You see, if he just gave us a band that sucked and told us why he thought they were good, we'd have a field day.  However, he's listing a boatload of tripe, and since nearly all of it is crap, it's not like we can just single out certain ones (well, I guess we can, but I wouldn't know where to start), and I doubt any of us other than Tommy are meticulous enough to write a treatise about that list.

If you want vomit, I have seen Poison every year since 2001, and I plan on seeing them again come Labor Day, along with the likes of Ratt and some other band I don't remember. Winger maybe.

How is it gimmicky and a stupid game? !!! is a fun name and I think the exclamation in GY!BE makes a big difference in how it's pronounced.

Lighten up! it's only punctuation.

i was going to tear you a new spleen with my internet ramblings. But frankly there are two factors limiting me;

1. The Who pretty much makes up for the mediocrity of the rest of list.
2. I doubt my brilliance would impact such a soul so lost to the cause of plausible taste.

Personally I think adding in punctuation as meaning in a name is pretty gimicky, but you know, that's hardly a big issue.

If you think "Godspeed You! Black Emporer" is a stupid punctuation game (and by implication is grammatically incorrect or at least unusual), you've obviously never read any book written before, say, the 1950s, or whenever it was that the "rule" that question and exclamation marks can only go at the end of a sentence came into vogue.  It's a pity really, since a lot of sentences really need one or the other in the middle, and a comma doesn't really cut it.

!!! bugs me because the gimmick is that's their entire name, and then they tell you it's "pronounced" "chk chk chk."  YOU CAN'T PRONOUNCE PUNCTUATION BY ITSELF ASIDFISJFIAJFARARARARARRRRR

GYBE bugs me because they moved the fucking exclamation point around like 3 or 4 times, not because it's there at all.

Also, Godspeed You! Black Emperor have changed their name exactly once, from Godspeed You Black Emperor!, when they found out that they were using an incorrect translation of the title of the film they had named themselves after.

Well, when Bob Seger suggested the name 'Xiu Xiu' to the band, he said it was pronounced "zhoo zhoo".
And for the record, GY!BE put out their best material when Seger was still in the band. Really bitching guitar solos.

“That’s how we pronounce it,” says Xiu Xiu frontman and songwriter Jamie Stewart approvingly after I fluke out and correctly identify the band as “shoe shoe.” “But we’ve been told by, like, nine million people that we pronounce it wrong, and those nine million people have told us nine million different ways to say it.”

Stewart points out that he’s never found the inevitable mangling of his band’s name all that troubling, although he admits that one variation is a bit contentious. “I think the only pronunciation that we actually object to is ‘zoo zoo,’” he says, “just because it sounds like a bad hair-metal band.”

I was thinking joo-joo. Like with a softer sounding J. I am, apparently, entirely wrong.

I'm pretty sure it's pronounced "shoo shoo"

I don't know. They always always play cheap ass shoes here. I could ask next time they come.

The Flaming Lips
Cursive
Ben Folds
Bob Dylan
The Beatles
Queen
The Dead Milkmen
Frank Sinatra
Iron and Wine
Cake

I see nothing wrong with those.  And maybe a few others.

I love Ben Folds as a matter of fact.  As well as Cursive and Iron & Wine.
