It's probably not wise to be narky with established members of the forum if you plan to be enjoying any sort of extended stay here.

(note: by established i mean they have been here longer and are more popular amongst other forumites than you).

My favourite comediennes are Sarah Kensington and Cal Wilson, though since she started doing the Wedge and hosting some bullshit radio show on MMM she has gone waay downhill. Maria Bamford is really good too.

Why is Sarah Silverman so great? Elaborate! Please?

People, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_oouelfH_LQ

You make your own call. The reason I don't like this (or any of her stand up) is that all she ever does is say really gross or potentially offensive things. I am 100% behind saying gross or offensive things for the sake of comedy. I am not easily offended by any means. If it's clever or funny enough, you can say anything to me and I'll crack up. I don't think she's funny. She rarely turns the gross or offensive things she's saying into actual jokes. All she does is say them out loud. Like it's supposed to be hilarious that a hot girl can get away with saying anything she wants without it having to be funny. It's stupid.

Think nothing, I AM clever. The fact of the matter is, Sarah Silverman, though cute, really isn't particularly funny. Betty put it pretty succinctly, she doesn't tell jokes so much as try to push the envelope just for the sake of pushing it and manages to get by on that in the same manner that Carlos Mencia and Dave Chapelle do. None of them are particularly engaging, original or conventionally funny, they just get by on the "Oh no, you di'eeeeent" factor.

Everything Mencia does, Pablo Francisco does better; everything Chapelle does, Chris Rock does better and everything Silverman does, Janeane Garofalo does better. Fortunately for Mencia, Chapelle and Silverman, none of the three have the vaguest bit of artistic integrity and have no issue with doing this shit that's completely lacking in substance.

What do you consider jokes if you don't think what they're doing is telling jokes?

Something that's legitimately funny as opposed to just stringing obscenities and vulgarity together for the sheer shock value of it, something all three of them tend to do. Obscenities and vulgarities are fine, but when there's no substance beyond them it loses its allure right quick. Dane Cook is actually fast down the road to this problem.

Dane Cook has rarely even been chuckle-worthy at any point in his career, anyway.

Still, Silverman and Chapelle tell jokes.  I really don't know how you can't think they're funny.  I love when Chapelle tells the story of the hobo that held everyone up on a bus by whipping out his junk.  Vulgar?  Yes.  Hilarious?  That too.  It's not simply profanity for profanity's sake, it's one of the oddest situations that you can possibly think of.

If I didn't know better, I'd say the anti-Chapelle and Silverman crowd are using association tactics, listing Mencia wherever Chapelle and Silverman are also listed.  But as I said, I know better.  That would be me being paranoid.

I really like Sarah Silverman.  I like her stand up better than her show, but i still watch.  I would like to see her beat up Rachael Ray.

She is also a good looking gal, but she has been dating Jimmy Kimmel for a long time.... and he is not a good looking guy.  Crazy.

I've always liked Tina Fey, especially when its the dry fake serious stuff they do on SNL from time to time.  Though I haven't watched that show in ages...it just seemed stupid after a while.
And I liked Sarah Silvermans bit in Aristocrats, I agree she can be obnoxious but she can also be soo funny ... and the hit and miss quality could have something to do with the fact that shes INSANE.
Then of course Ellen, the broadway special a while back was great.  And there was this comedian I heard along time ago Elvira something maybe, she had a great bit about lawn darts.   I also quite like the woman on the daily show right now.

My boyfriend thinks that Tammy Pescatelli is funny, but I think he may just think she is hot.

As for me, I think that Lucille Ball was a laugh riot, and possibly the funniest person ever. I also like Margaret Cho and I used to like Tracey Ullman. I haven't seen the latter in a long time though.

I don't like Sarah Silverman, but there's plenty of female comedians I've enjoyed.

There's one whose name I really, really wish I hadn't forgot, but she had a Comedy Central special where she actually spent 5 minutes talking about Final Fantasy Legend. It was the most obscure video game reference I had ever witnessed on TV and I was in love.

That's Jackie Kashian!  I heart her.  (BTW, is it bad that I immediately knew who you were talking about?  I love that CCP special.

("I am a grown woman, and I need to shoot sh*t.  It's best that it be done fictionally.")

At the risk of being shunned by everyone here, I'm a huge Janeane Garofalo fan.  I recently saw her perform live this past March (the second time I've seen her live; the first was five years ago) and thought she was still very funny.

I like Tina Fey a lot.  And Amy Poehler, Amy Sedaris, Lizz Winstead, Elvira Kurt, Maria Bamford, and a few others whose names, at the risk of sounding like Alberto Gonzales, I can't recall.

Also, Sarah Silverman is kind of pretty (if nothing else, her hair is beautiful and I wish I had black hair--I have it dyed but I wish it were naturally black), but she's not funny to me at all.

Kathleen Madigan is a good female staundup comic. Adele Givens is a funny female comic. Sue Murphy is a funny female comic. Retta is a funny female comic. Jackie Kashian is a funny female comic. Maria Bamford is a funny female comic.

Sarah Silverman is not funny. Sarah Silverman's standup is mediocre at best and her show makes me weep for cable television. Saying things that are either absurd or "pushing the envelope" in a precocious baby voice just doesn't strike me as being all that entertaining. She is successful because she is cute, but let's be honest. How hard is it to be cute if your profession is female comedian? You're up against Roseanne and Joan Rivers.

And to those who mentioned Jackie Kasian before me, what about her talking about war reinactment nerds? That made me absolutely howl. "Jackie Kashian puts out for pelts"

I must admit that I laughed way too hard at the episode with the queefing ghost, but other than that I agree with the majority on this one. Especially since I know a woman who's equally filthy, five times as beautiful, and infinitely funnier. Kate Mulligan...everything Sarah Silverman thinks she is and more.

But since none of you know Kate Mulligan, everything I've just said is basically meaningless.

Guys, I don't know who the fuck Sarah Silverman is, but I bet she's a floating piece of shit compared to Fiona O'Loughlin.

Yes, I know most of the time she talks about her kids and how she's the worst mother in the world, but it is hilarious. I've been watching the Melbourne comedy festival gala DVD and most of the time I just skip past everybody except her, Arj Barker and Tripod.

Cal Wilson is painfully hit or miss with me. Half her jokes are hilarious, half her jokes are just idiotic gags about how she's a kiwi. Also after seeing her with a passable aussie accent in Skithouse, her NZ accent kind of bugs me.

And as for the DVD, I don't know where you can get it, it just turned up here one day,

Also. who is the bright red haired woman who I see sometimes on the comedy channel? She's a fucking riot. She's about late 20's by the look of her, bright red hair, australian, kind of crass, and funny as shit.

Victoria Wood.

That woman makes me laugh. She's my top comedian, male or female, and her shows and songs make me laugh. There's someting about her that makes you not realise she's being as dirty as she is, and it all seems quite innocent, whereas if someone else was to say it, it would sound far more rude. She's also very quick witted and works well in many different situations. Her stand-up, acting, and music are all glorious.
