So, due to laws cracking down etc. show us some graffiti. The legal pieces..or say it's legal..same thing. Either way. Here's mine:

That one was my fav. My parents let me do this to the side of our shed because they didn't want me going off and doing it illegally. Not that that stops me...

(not to turn this thread conversational, but seeing as no one else is adding anything )

I hate the people that are all 'keep the city clean' when the construction workers spray paint everywhere with those day glow paints, and never clean it up. It looks worse than anything one of our artists can do.

The abandoned building idea is a great one, but city officials say that it would 'encourage graffiti on public property'. I would think that if we had a place to do it, than we wouldn't have to do it on the trains and/or buildings. Though the adrenaline rush is slightly lower. If you are doing it for the art, than that part doesn't really matter.

There was a wall near one of the schools I used to go to in Texas that was open for anyone to add their contribution to the art world upon, be it with spray paint or anything else they could put on that wall. The catch was that you really needed to not mind it being quickly painted over with by something else. It made for an often interesting and ever-changing mural, when people bothered themselves to do it.

And there really wasn't much of a problem with illegal graffiti in my hometown, though there are exceptions and gangs will be gangs I suppose. Little tykes.

I think there was research done that proved that most illegal graffiti was done by artists, not gangs. I forgot where it took place though...and it obviously excludes areas, like parts of new york.

The stencil ones are awesome. That takes skill though...and time. I do a lot of stickers. No skill necessary except for having to be able to draw. Tagging, it all depends on the artist. There is one in Portland named Robot who tags their name in cursive. It actually looks quite pretty, since it's legible and looks like they spent more than a minute on it. The scribbling...hate that

There was a visiting artist that came to my uni this year that started as a graffiti artist and he was amazing, but sadly I can't remember his name right now. He did things like paint trucks (the big trailers, not like your neighbor's Ford). His specialty was to paint whatever he was painting over and over and over, till what he originally laid down could barely be seen, if at all. He showed a really cool video of himself painting a floor and it was awesome. When I figure out his name, I'll post it.

I don't actually do any of this myself, but there's a few choice tags arond my campus that I laugh at everytime I walk past.

There's some cool ones on State St. in Madison, WI of eyes and faces. I'll have to see if a friend of mine has them on her computer and if she can send them to me.

i seem to have misplaced all the pics from me and my friends doing trains and buildings etc. so here's some random one i found of my buddy doing somebody's garage or something. He's more talented than me and the rest of our crew combined anyway.

To be fair, there are a lot of people who DID start doing stencils because Banksy does them, and try to emulate his style. But there again all artists have examples of that, the ones from hundreds of years ago had students who spent their whole life copying their arty masters.

Apologies, my art history knowledge is appalling, but the concept is there.

I figured out which artist that reminded me, Pian (But she's from Venezuela).

On the Isle of Wight, and not much. I ended up with an adult caution for criminal damage, don't even have to declare it as a conviction for most jobs. The thing I was more concerned about was the compulsory taking of my fingerprints and DNA.

I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I interpret the blur as fitting in well with the impact of the hammertime. Like: Stop *doing!* Hammertime!

I just see a lot of "Stop Bush" back in Mass. The swan one reminds me of my own hometown's penchant for the stealing of signs. The most coveted is one in a local duck pond that says (I swear): "Beware Aggressive Swans."

It's actually pretty useful, so I never had the heart to take it myself. Those swans are BEASTLY.

I am a wack ass hippie, and wrote stop war, and sexism, and racism, and homophobia on some signs, in chalk, and then almost got arrested. I got off with a disorderly conduct citation. That happened today.

It's not really the hippies spraying the "Stop World Trade" etc. It's the wanna be anarcho-punks that feel the need to express their views via something no one cares about. I dunno, I like in Detroit and we have a lot of "stop Whitey" tags. Anyway...

I hate when the gangs decide to do it all over peoples fences. Then there is the massive crackdown on graffiti and the real artists have to pay for the stupidity of others. Though we don't have any real stuff here, except for a couple tags here and there. Maybe a stencil. But still our newspaper feels the need to print an article about Anchorage's graffiti problem. They never really specify that it's GANG graffiti, random words scrawled across walls in neighborhoods etc. Then there are the kids that decide it would be funny to put 'FUCK' up on the side of someone's house or garage.

It bugs me a little.

Wait, I am confused right now. So certain people are not allowed to post graffiti if it is not "artsy" enough? Freedom of speech only really applies if it is not "gang language?" To most people graffiti is a blight no matter what - it doesn't matter if it's a cute little whimsical penguin on a brick wall or just a random words. In fact, the motive really doesn't matter to most people - art is such a subjective concept anyway. Like maybe the "fuck" is some sort of avant garde art that you simply aren't getting. Maybe the "hammertime" on the stop sign that has been heralded as "sick" (in the good way!) is actually a defacement of federal property.

By the way, some asshole went crazy with his poorly made "hammertime" stencil in my old town. I am bored of "hammertime" on stop signs by now.

Hula hoops on the pedestrian crossing sign people are still hilarious, however.

I can see where you are coming from, but I still believe there is a difference between the artists who plan out pieces and such, and the gang members who feel they need to 'mark their territory' (which usually ends up with another gang writing over the other gangs sign etc. etc.).

Ok, this is just begging for me to introduce you lot to the concept that is Hobbit Motherfuckers.

Particularly around where we live there are a whole bunch of teenagers that think they're radcore by tagging up peoples property and such, and just generally doing a messy and most of the time (unless you know what the "gangs" are) unreadable.

Enter Hobbit Motherfuckers.

A couple of mates, which then evolved into a fair amount of people, say seven or eight, were involved, but mainly it's been from a couple of people, I had my small turn in it, but I just didn't have the time or supplies, well they had this idea, it was taken from a Turbonegro song, and the names for each person involved were generally somewhat linked to Turbonegro songs as well. Anyway!

Hobbit Motherfuckers isn't the name of any group or gang, it was what it was all behind, it's hard to explain, but what it is right, is that it's calling whoever reads it a Hobbit Motherfucker, unless you can see sence in what the messages are. There were various messages, all generally centered around pointing out the decline of the youth status, such messages as "My generation sucks." "Tagging is idiotic, no one thinks you're cool." Random things like that, that's just basic, there would be various things like the writing of damn essays. It went on and it was all completely cynical. You must understand it's VERY hard to explain the concept properly without showing proper examples. But other things that were a part of this were during bulk rubbish collection (don't know who else has this, it's when you put out things too big for general rubbish collection, and they get taken away) well they ended up getting a couple of couches, an old worn out TV, some random other things, put it in the middle of an oval at the park and then wrote a sign saying "Free range old folks home." There are some random funny things that were associated with it. But there were rules as well. NEVER tag people's property, only public, and if it was in an area frequented by children then the words would be censored. Just general stuff like that.

Ah, that's the best you're going to get out of me at a quater to midnight.

also, apolgies for the "wack-ass hippy" comment earlier. i did not mean to imply that all hippies are wack-asses. some are some aren't. hell, my parents are fucking hippies. but unfortunately, i live in northwest washington (i.e. National Hippy Headquarters) and most of the hippies i meet on a daily basis are, in fact, wack.
