Symphony X
« on: 27 Aug 2007, 12:08 »

I've just started getting into this band through the awesome word-of-mouth surrounding their most recent album, Paradise Lost. Seriously, it's like everyone I know who listens to metal in any way, shape or form is talking about them. For those unfamiliar, they play a mix of Prog metal, Symphonic metal and neo-classical metal, sometimes switching up in the same song. I've been listening to their 24-minute track "the Odyssey" off the album of the same title quite a bit too.

So, what are everyone's thoughts on this band?

Meh, Symphony X is too much pointless wankery for me.

I mean, yeah, they're good, but it's like the entire point of them making music is to show the world how insanely awesomely better than you they are.

Holy hell, I was listening to one of they're songs, and suddenly, mid riff, for no apparent reason, the bassist does this bitchin' two hand tapping thing. What? A bassist? Tapping? In my metal?

From the guitarists' insanely mindblowing fast sweeps, to the drummer's strange polyrythmic (is that a word?) beats that make drummer's ears bleed, to the bassists' entirely unneeded random sweeping breaks, it seems the entire point of the band is to stand up on a stage and scream "WHY YES, WE ARE BETTER MUSICIANS THAN YOU ARE OR WILL EVER BE, THANK YOU."

But then, I might be slightly bitter.

Isn't that the point of power metal? Maybe I'm not nearly music-jaded enough, but I find their stuff quite listenable.

Symphony X is a favorite of mine.

Seeing them in concert was one of the greatest moments of my musical life.

The point of their music is to make awesome music, not show off.  Michael Romeo is one of the most humble guitarists I've ever seen, especially for being so MIND BLOWINGLY AMAZING.
