The Flaming Lips
« on: 31 Aug 2007, 15:04 »

Due to a friend, I've recently gotten into The Flaming Lips.  They were one of those bands that I knew and that people praised but that, for whatever reason, I never listened to.  Well, that streak ended for me when I heard The Soft Bulletin at work.  Guys, it's fucking amazing! Anyways, in light of these new feelings, I want you kids to do me a favour: talk about The Flaming Lips! Rank the albums in order or outstandingness, compliment/badmouth Wayne Coyne, tell funny concert tripping out stories, whatever.

Alright, have fun.

Flaming Lips are probably one of my favorite bands of all time, and The Soft Bulletin ranks up there with some of the best CDs I own.

I'd rank the four I own in this order, from top to bottom.

1. The Soft Bulletin
2. Clouds Taste Metallic
3. Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
4. At War With the Mystics

Honestly? I'd only say Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi are really worth checking out. That last album was terrible.

Obviously, Zaireeka if you're prepared to listen to it 'properly', which I doubt you are.

I was just about to start a similar thread myself. I've been a fan for about a year, but it wasn't until the owner of my favourite record shopo started talking about them that i really got into them. This guy's been known to set up the four players in the shop to play Zaireeka to the customers. I still don't have all the albums but am getting there- so i haven't sorted out any favourites yet. I think Transmissions is a really underated album though. If there's one concert i want to see before i die it is undoubtedly the lips. Speaking of which i ordered in my copy of UFO's at the Zoo bout a week ago and can't wait to watch it.

Zaireeka was not nearly worth the effort.

I found out the other day that the wonderful 'Zaireeka' is out of print. What the hell Warner Brothers? How could you let this happen?!

This post is correct.

Zaireeka was not nearly worth the effort.

This post is wrong.

I got to see the Flaming Lips this summer.  It was one of the best shows I've ever seen, just behind Daniel Johnston.  I couldn't even see the band but, it didn't even fucking matter.  I was enthralled by the hundreds of orange balloons and confetti raining over the crowd.  It's is a very wasteful but, entertaining show.

I also went through a Flaming Lips phase, but I also still listen to them.
I've just exhausted the amount of material I want to purchase from them.
1.Clouds Taste Metallic
2.In A Priest Driven Ambulance
3.Hit To Death In The Future Head
4.The Soft Bulletin
5.Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
6.At War With The Mystics
To be honest though, there's definitely a big gap in love of album when you pass number three.
And I was also really let down by At War With The Mystics, which is the only one I have downloaded, that I don't own.

I still have it in a folder buried away on a CDR somewhere. You get to pick 3 tracks from that album to 're-sell' me the Flaming Lips. If it's good, I'd really like to know how I listened to it wrong.

Go.

I don't like the album that much either, but it isn't awful. It's just not great.
I'll give your request a shot.
How about: Pompeii Am Gotterdammerung, My Autumn Cosmic Rebellion, and The Wizard Turns On..

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

I like the Flaming Lips a lot. Or, I used to. I think every time I get one of their albums I expect it to be weirder and druggier than it is. Granted I have only listened to Satellite Heart era forward, but all of those albums are worth a listen. I don't think their last one was that bad, despite my friend telling me it was crap, but I was drunk all the times I heard it, so maybe I'm wrong.

This is probably the one discography I've ever acquired where I still listen to pretty much every album. Yoshimi especially, but that's a given.

Zaireeka is excellent too, you just have to give it a chance to offer you it's supple bosoms. D:

Has anyone here heard the Yeah Yeah Yeah Song in Anatropous Reflex? It's on the W.A.N.D. ep and it is way creepy and slow and FUCKING AWESOME-way better than the version on At War with the Mystics.

Stop slagging off At War with the Mystics its a good CD. I went to see them last year the funny thing was the SECC (Scottish Exhibition centre) wouldn't let them put their lasers up they were afraid that someone might lose an eye!

I love the Lips. I saw them on New Years in Madison Square Garden with Wilco and Sleater-Kinney a few years ago. Best show of my life.

Has anyone seen the new DVD that just came out? U.F.O.s at the Zoo - Live at the Oklahoma City Zoo... I hear it's supposed to be spectacular, so I'm buying it this weekend.
