Topic: Help with Shoegaze (Read 12481 times)

I have had "Loveless" for ages but i only just recently started to wonder what else is out there, i was wondering if anybody else has any Shoegaze that they can recommend. Maybe like a top 5 or something. The only thing that really reminded me of it was Souvlaki by Slowdive. Anyway any suggestions would be amazing.

Aside from tommy's incredibly useful post (Because I see what he did thar 2.), there's a lot of good stuff out there.
Check out My Bloody Valentine's first album, Isn't Anything.
Also, Slowdive has an offshoot thing called Monster Movie.
Jesus And Mary Chain is an obvious band, uhm, Catharine's Wheel is one, and get Ride's Nowhere.
Asobi Seksu also released an album a little while ago, Citrus, which is quite shoegazey. I've heard that A Sunny Day In Glasgow also made a shoegazey album recently. Last, I haven't listened to this, but it just came out, A Place To Bury Stranger's self-titled LP sounds great.

Pick up Airiel - The Battle Of Sealand from this year. The track with Ulrich Schnauss on is wicked.

As mentioned above Catherine Wheel are shit hot, get Ferment and Chrome. Slowdive actually has two offshoot things, both amazing - Monster Movie and Mojave 3. My fave Monster Movie is the first one, 'Last Night Something Happened', and the first two M3 albums (Out Of Tune and Ask Me Tomorrow) are wicked.

Also try SIANspheric - Somnium, and their split with Toshack Highway (guy from Swervedriver's new band). Coastal and Avoiding The Consequences by A Shoreline Dream are snazzy too.

Yeah, definitely look into Isn't Anything, and maybe even some of MBV's older EPs, like Glider or Ecstasy and Wine. They're rare, but worth getting if you find them.

Also, The Jesus and Mary Chain and The Verve are pretty good bands to look into, also.

Catherine Wheel are shoegaze?

This has genuinely confused me, somebody explain this to me. I obviously am not actually aware of what makes a shoegaze band.

"Common musical elements in shoegazing are distortion (aka "fuzzbox"), droning riffs and a "wall of sound" from noisy guitars. Typically, two distorted rhythm guitars are played together to give an amorphous quality to the sound. Vocals are typically subdued in volume and tone, but underneath the layers of guitars is generally a strong sense of melody. While the genres which influenced shoegazing often used drum machines, shoegazing more often features live drumming."

Catherine Wheel - Ferment
Slowdive - Souvlaki

Those are my favorite shoegaze albums other than Loveless, though there's a lot of other stuff out there. There's Swervedriver, Curve, Spiritualized, The Boo Radleys etc., I have yet to listen to all of it.

As much as I hate to link to a band's MySpace, check out Sister Vanilla. It's Linda Reid with her two brothers Jim and William Reid (who are in JAMC). Not sure if it really counts as shoegaze, but the CD "Little Pop Rock" is well worth checking out.

Not surprisingly, it sounds quite a bit like the Jesus and Mary Chain with a female singer... think of "Sometimes Always" to get an idea, but not quite. There aren't any songs posted on the MySpace, but you can watch the video for "Can't Stop the Rock" to get a feel for what they sound like, and there's a torrent of the full album out there.

If you're into heavier stuff, Jesu do some pretty nice doom metal/shoegaze stuff. Hell Conqueror is basically a Failure album at 1/2 speed.

I've heard the Cocteau Twins being described as a sort of shoegaze-forerunner. I've only heard a couple of their albums, and they're pretty different from things like Loveless, but there are similarities, and they are excellent.

I've heard a ton of acclaim for Asobi Seksu's Citrus, but I found it really boring. Am I the only one?

Their later stuff moved away from shoegaze but they were an incredible band anyway and you can definitely hear the shoegaze in all their work.

I really wanted something akin to MBV, but not mono, and, just, saccharine-coated.
So, yeah, I like Citrus.

now i have a spiritualized album but im kind of confused, is "Let It Come Down" shoegaze?

also i only have Jesu's self titled album which came bundled with an Isis album i bought a while back, when i buy another one what should it be?

I don't really think Let It Come Down counts at all, really, beyond a few moments. Same with Amazing Grace. Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space would be closer, and though I haven't heard any of their earlier albums, I've heard tell that they have even more of the shoegazing sound.

If you like the noisier end of things there's:

The Ecstasy of St. Theresa - Susserate. Not too much unlike My Bloody Valentine - Anything.

Skywave - anything you can find by them (good luck). Not just a shoegaze band. More of a band who writes timeless garage songs with shoegaze effects and over the top production. A Place to Bury Strangers and Ceremony are both spin-off bands of Skywave. You would do well to get ahold of their stuff as well.

Loop - anything you can find (also extremely hard to find).

Alcian Blue

On the dreamier side there's:

Lush - Split

Ride - Nowhere

Chapterhouse - Whirlpool

Swirlies anyone?

I also second the recommendation of Airiel's Battle of Sealand.

Well they only have two full-lengths. I prefer the Silver EP to Conqueror but the latter is pretty good nonetheless.

but what a great fucking band..anyone knows if they are dropping a new album now? since they started touring again and acctually got made a new song that doesnt totaly suck...

They sounded pretty good when I saw 'em in Germany. Not much of a stage show but tight sound.

yeah..the sound quality was good..and the concert wasnt bad at all, i just wished i saw them when they were barbed wire kisses all over..where they really took you up with upside down just to bring you down with something like psychocandy..
and man has william gotten fat...quitting speed really has it downsides too

I only just found them, but The Daysleepers have two EPs out released last year. They are fucking amazing although not in a MBV or JAMC style shoegaze way, but i suppose more in a, sister genre, dreampop way? Regardless, I love quintessential shoegaze bands new and old and also love these guys.

Oh my God, I am in love with them. It's like a drug. They're massively underrated and AMAZING. Love is Hell and The Death of Cool are two of my favorite albums of all time. Oh man. I love Kitchens. And shoegaze.
